Time for my first service...

and I have a few questions. 05 TL, maintenance minder says first service soon. Just passed 5000 miles this AM. Service code is A1 which I believe to be an oil change. I know I can take to a dealer and pay $90 for an oil change or I can go across the street to Jiffy Lube and get the same service for a lot less.

Question 1. Why should I go to a dealer for this service?

Question 2. If I go to Jiffy Lube or another lube shop, are they typically equipped to properly reset the MID? I realize not all oil change shops will be able to do this but I guess the question is, is resetting this device common shop knowledge or can it only be done at an Acura dealer?

That's all for now. Need to change the oil. Thanks. Oh, yeah, I'm near Weir Canyon Acura but I got my TL No Nav, at South Coast Acura at invoice last August.

OK, I'm a dumbass. I read the FAQ. Still interested in opinions however. Hey, at least I admit it.

$90? You can't be serious. For just an oil change my dealer charges $26

Do Not go to one of the national quickie lube places. A friend of mine took her car there, and they forgot to replace the oil plug. Needless to say her car was screwed after that

A1 is oil change plus tire rotation. At the dealer, you are paying too much.

All A is is an oil change and check stuff they should check anyway, so figure $25-30. Add another $35-40 for tire rotation, and you're almost to what the dealer wants.

Ask them how much a simple oil change is, and then ask how much tire rotation is, and I'll bet it's cheaper than an A1.

If you do get it done somewhere else, see this thread for instructions on resetting the MID.

Hyde - My advice is to only take your car to the dealer for "warranty" work and find a local, independent mechanic to service your car for everything else.

Ask co-workers and neighbors and I'm sure someone has someone trustworthy they use.

An independent will be cheaper and in my personal experience the independent will actually do what you pay him to do.

Agree 100% with the dealer alternate for oil changes, tire rotation etc. That said, be sure to get work orders / invoices detailing the work done, date done etc c/w vin to have in case you need to make a warranty claim and prove you were servicing the car regularily if they try and burn ya for that.

Jiffy Lube. $30 for oil/filter change with Pennzoil 5W20, $15 for tire rotation. Do not use their lame Mileguard/FRAM oil filter, buy your own Purolator PureONE oil filter from Pep Boys or Advanced Auto for $6. They'll give you a $2 credit if you bring your own filter.

If you don't have a Pep Boys or Advanced Auto nearby, go to a Napa Auto Parts store and buy the correct sized Napa Gold Oil Filter; even though it isn't as efficient as the PureOne, it is still a much better choice than most filters construction wise and filtration wise.

Most Jiffy Lube do a reasonably good job. Watch them. I really don't agree with the comments of others regarding quick lube businesses...most of them do a job that is comparable to the dealer, quality wise. (well, sans the oil filter, which you should bring your own)

It can't hurt to save documentation, but I wouldn't sweat it if you didn't. My dealer already tried that bs on me, but in the end they re-instated the warranty on my 2G TL.

To make a long story short, the disclaimer in the warranty simply said to follow the maintenence guide. The maintenence guide stated that the two intervals were "recommended" to be followed. Each service item said that something "should" be done/checked/replaced. "Recommended" and "should" have different legal ramifications than "must" and "required".

(They tried to void my warranty because I didn't have the dealer flush my tranny regularly. They ended up replacing my tranny free of charge)

The first two services in Canada are free. Not sure if there is the same deal in the US, but you should check.

$90? My dealer first change is free and then $27 for each one after that. And I like Synthetic, the Honda dealer said if I bring the synthetic oil he will do the change for $20.

I just took mine to a Jiffy Lube and got the (supposedly) best Synthetic oil that you can get... it was like $55... i didnt have time to do it myself so I had to run in real quick before I took a trip. BUT, I also stood right outside the bay and watched every single little thing they did. I think I made them mad but I really could care less.... its MY car....
