If I was going to use synoil, I would start after the first oil change, which would probably be from 4000 to 6000 miles. With synoil you can most likely go at least 7500 mile between changes. Dino oil about 5000 miles.

Debating whether to use synthetic on my first or 2nd oil change. Want to let the oil seep in before i switch to a lighter grade.
and with all do respect, why cheap out on a 35k car? If you cant afford premium fuel or premium oil then stick with a nonpremium car. Synthetic made a big difference in the ride and feel of my last pos american boat, I'm sure it will do the same in my new baby.

I ran Mobil 1 in my 1997 Camaro Z28 for the three years I owned it; I saw no difference in power or performance. What benefit did I gain over those three years? None that I can look back on except for a thinner wallet. If we were to keep our TLs for 300,000 miles we *might* look back and see some difference, but I can see no problem with following mfr specs for all fluids. Anything over and above has no provable ROI. Please prove me wrong; I have no issue with that. I would say keep the money or spend it on something that will show TANGIBLE gains, not "it was smoother", or it "made a difference" or it "idled better" which are all vagueries that 1. don't substantiate the price difference and 2. don't show any measureable, I say, measurable improvements in engine performance or longevity and 3. may not be attriutable to which oil you use.

I used to run my Mobil 1 in my old car up to 15K. I just made sure to change the oil filter every 4-5K. Does this sound reasonable or absurd? I thought synthetic held up a lot longer and as long as a clean filter was there it was good for up to 25K.

The OP was curious when he should install synthetic oil. He can install at his first oil change, or as soon as 3000 miles, which would be enough time for the factory fill to provide the additional anti-wear protection during break-in.
As for "cheaping out" on a 35K car, that's beside the point. It's not about "cheaping out," it's about judging whether or not is necessary. There is little or no evidence that using synthetic oil in comparison to using a conventional oil, when both are changed at the recommended intervals, that one or the other will bring significant increase or decrease in engine life, at least to most drivers and even those who keep their cars for 200,000 miles.
Keep an eye out in the Pep Boys or Advanced Auto advertisements. Save your money, these two stores have name brand conventional oil (often Castrol GTX or Pennzoil) onsale for $1.50/qt (or less) after mail-in rebate. Change this per the maintenance minder system and you'll be fine. Change it more frequently if you desire.

^^Thank you. I just hate to see people throw away money like these are $600,000 Ferraris, especially when most folks will be trading out vehicles in 3-5 years. Makes no financial sense.

I really hope you do not believe the donkey who wrote that article...!!!
If his info was even correct, it is outdated by at least 10 years.
More often than not, even with some shearing, wear control is unaffected in most applications.
Here's a good example: http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/...513;p=1#000001

I have been using Synthetic oil in all my cars for the last 13 or so years. I usually take factory oil out at 1k letting dealer od what is usually their "first oil change free" and then ride another 1k on that and start with Mobil 1 at the 2k point. On my 06 TL I skipped the dealer change and pulled the factory oil at 2k and went to synthetic. On the TL I follow the mid to about 30% (usually 5k miles) and do a change. On my previous cars I woudl do the chaneg at 3-3.5K , but after reading so many of the articles on modern oils, especially synthectics I think 5K is a safe numebr for general use and even that is proabably overly pesimistic.

Synthetics will last a lot more than 15K..We tested it in the lab engines and it ran up to 100,000 with the 1990 sysnthetics, and they are better now! It is really good stuff and better than conventional oils in many ways, especially in extremely cold or hot climates. Most conventioal oils are 40-50% additive, where syns are 98% enginnered molecule. The old Mobl 1 commercial about the conventional oil burning in the fry pan and the syn not is pretty accurate! The problem is the filter. You need to change it often and top off the crankcase. The other problem is you will definiteloy void your engine warranty. I usually change every 7500 - 10,000 miles or so until warrranty is over, changing the filter when the service light comes on, then go to 15K interval and change the filter and top off every 5000 miles.
Now you get get a lot of people that may disagree, and I am not saying that conventional oils will not work. They are cheaper, but the two oils are very different. I am saying you will get some better engine protection and longer change interval with the syns.

I use synthetic in my Grand Prix because I used to race with it. I felt that it did provide better protection under severe use than conventional oil.
Having said that, I still feel that conventional oils provide all the protection that most of us need.

I've been reading up on the oil change threads because I'm to the point of needing my first oil change. After reading some posts about changing it yourself I may go back to that in lieu of paying for the service. I've got two questions:
1. What the torque spec for the TL lug nut since I don't have the shop manual yet (Fathers Day is coming)?
2. To those who change your own oil, what do you do with the old oil?
OK 3 questions
3. What's your method? ie oil container/pan, funnels, etc.
My be off topic but any response would be appreciated.
Thanks.
