Sun shade for windshield

Does anybody recommend one? I bought one at a local auto parts store but it is not tall enough to cover the whole base of the windshield. As we all know the dash goes very deep all the way to the windshield. I want to keep my dash nice and the most inexpensive way is with a sun shield. Anybody have any suggestions?

Check out Costco. I bought one there for around $7 that does a pretty decent job of covering the entire windshield. It is comprised of two large rings that fold up into a small circle (fits under drivers seat). It has some extra material that is supposed to cover where the circles miss, but they do not usually stay up to provide 100% sunblockage. It also came with two extra ones for the side windows, but I never use those. Good luck and let us know if you find something else!

Covercraft makes the best, folding hard-board type, custom fit to each model.

Thanks for the quick responses... I truly love my new Acura, it is an 06 and my first car I bought with my money! I'm very pleased with this forum, it is truly a gem to come here and read what others have to say about their cars. Thanks again!

The covercraft are not cheap, ($45) but are not cheap quality either and are a custom fit. Mine came with a slipcover for storing too.

here's a pic-

Anyone that has a black leather interior should have one. Not only does it block the sun out while sitting outside, but it also saves your interior from the ultraviolet rays that discolor your carpeting and interior. Couple that with tinted windows and you should about as much protection as you need.

I also would check Big Lots, where I got my circle-type sunshade for $3. Some of the ones at Big Lots look truly hideous, with flames & other graphic designs; I got lucky when they had a bunch of silver fabric shades (matching my silver TL). Otherwise, Target has the exact same ones, Axxius brand, for less than $10. Most sun shades- circular wire/fabric and folding rectangular types, come in two sizes; get the larger one (for minivans & trucks) and it will cover the entire front windshield of the TL.

I'm using the Costco 2 pack sunshade. Works fine, even if it takes some work to get it to sit right. And you get 2!!! lol

There are plenty of custom fit ones out there- just make sure they have the mirrored finish- a good one runs about $25. They prevent dash fade from the sun, and do keep the interior of the car cooler- by reports of manufacturers, about 40 degree difference.

The one I got from the dealer is great. Fits perfect. Only thing is it needs some support in the middle, kinda sags a bit...

The Covercraft is accordian style, grey texture on the outside and grey felt covering on the inside, which are stitched to the fiberboard core. Fills the entire windshield snugly, no sagging. (No I don't work for em).
A fine car like our Acuras deserve a quality, good looking sunscreen IMO.

This looks interesting...how well do they retract? Does it limit any visibility when you are driving?

HeatShield

I was going crazy with my folding sun shade, which I think I bought at Costco years ago. It had worked in another car but wasn't big enough for the TL and kept falling down.

Since it's been way over 100 here for about forever, I had to do something. I went to a fancy-schmancy car accessories store and the guy there swore by HeatShield. "Eet is all they use een the Ferrarris," he cooed. (I swear this guy was the inspiration for Luigi in Cars by Pixar.) He told me each one is custom-fitted for each model and year of car so they fit perfectly. They have to be ordered.

So I thought, what the heck? I plunked down $34.95 plus tax and a few more dollars for shipping and crossed my fingers.

The thing arrived by UPS two days later (pretty impressive). It fits perfectly. Every inch of the windshield is covered, corner to corner.

The outside is the shiniest silver you've ever seen (Mylar or similar), so it really reflects the sun. The inside is soft dull grey. The edges are bound with black cloth so there are no hard edges to harm the precious interior of the car.

The shield itself is about 1/4" thick of closed-cell foam, so it provides excellent insulation. I couldn't begin to tell you the "R value" of the insulating properties but all I know is that my car has been comfortable to get into when it's been sitting in full sun on a 95 degree+ day.

I am totally sold on this thing, and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. Here's the manufacturer's website for more information:

I think there was a group buy for the canvasworks heat shield right?

If anyone's interested in another group buy, I'd be down for that.

I thought state sales tax was 7.75% in Ca not 8.25%?

Is the heat shield soft in the middle? or is it more like the covercraft that looks like it stays up pretty firm?

The Ecplise SunShade mounts on either edge of your windshield, using special mounting brackets that stick on tight, and yet can be removed and cleaned off with no problem if/when you're ready. For day-to-day use, though, you either leave it mounted, or the shade slips easily off the mounts (which stay on your windshield). It retracts to about 3/4" thickness on each side, so there's pretty much no effect on visibility while driving. And, it's thus self-storing.

I just paid something like twelve bucks for an accordian style at Walmart of all places. It was the extra large size. Foil color on the outside. You have to leave edge one panel folded because of the width, but the height seems to be close. I'm actually pretty pleased with it!

Get one that's meant for a truck or SUV. They will fit just fine.

I agree with mahaloco. I bought one for a truck at Target and it fits perfectly. It's one of the ones that are silver on one side and black on the other. It folds into a small pouch.

I have one from Brookstone that my mother and father gave me long before I got the TL. It's designed for use on either the inside or the outside of the windshield. During the summer you use it as a sunshade; during the winter, if you're parked outside you put it on the outside of the windshield and pass two side pieces in through the doors and suction-cup them to the inside of the windshield. It makes it so that you don't have to scrape the windshield.

Works pretty well for both purposes, although it can be hard to put in place by yourself when used as an interior sunscreen because the material is soft yet the edges are rigid and it folds in the middle, so one side tends to flop around while you're trying to put the other in place.

Yeah, I bought a "universal fit" sunshade today....and it sucks....ass....big time. Barely stays up...too wide for the windshield, so I'm gonna return it and buy a custom fit shade. Been researching a few makes and the UVS-100 and Heatshield models seem to do the trick.

That's the one I bought from Big Lots for $3 per post #8- Brookstone overstock FTW!
Still works well (used about 3 days per week), and it's 3+ years old.

As much as I hate the dealer, they sell the best sunshades. Fit is perfect and the description sounds like a few posts above by rt4563. Very good insulation and reflective qualities.

I just got one from the dealer as well... I dunno the brand name but it may be Heatshield. And it literally is a perfect custom fit for the TL. I didn't even need to put down the sun visors! $40 well spent, especially here in Texas

In terms of fade protection, is something like this still needed for my car if I live in New England weather? It's only hot like 2 days out of the year haha but i'm just wondering if those ultraviolet rays will still damage our leather, dash, etc. even in the middle of cold season

Absolutely....even in our short 3 month Summers up here, the sun can get very hot and still do a lotta damage.

Walmart has one that is 2 large circles that are attached and they flip and fold into itself to stay compact. It fits nicely under the passengers seat when not used. It covers the windshield pretty good. Just take the sunvisors and pull them down and extend them inward up against the windshield to hold it up ...about 15 bucks from walmart
