So tough to say goodbye, my Friend
I've been through a difficult day today. My best friend, my dog Toby was diagnosed with cancer today. He will be put down tomorrow morning and my son and I will bury him in my back yard tomorrow. Toby who is just 3 years old, was the most gentle and compassionate Rottweiler. Obviously, I've not had a dry eye all day. Its been quite painful. Tomorrow will be worse as I say my final good-byes to my constant companion and friend. Those of you who have a pet will understand, those who don't have a pet, simply won't.
Time to change the avatar.
I will so miss you you, my Friend!

That sucks...Sorry to hear about your best friend. I had a Rottweiler when i was 5 and grew up with her till i was 14 or so. She was my best friend too, until one day she was also diagnosed with cancer. Such a sad day when we had to put her down, even till this day i still miss her...

I had to do that same thing with my 2 year old English bulldog, but with all his pains and issues I know he is much better off, and I went out a couple of months later and brought home another little bully that loves to zoom zoom in my TL, what a perfect little guy

Sorry to hear about Toby. I was in your shoes two years ago when my family and I made that painful decision to end our beloved dog, Max's suffering. He was also diagnosed with cancer. Tomorrow will definately be a tough day for you but you'll get through it. And when you're feeling up to it, check out the website below. It will help you get through this difficult period of your life. Hang in there.

I totally hear you man. My dog just passed away on 08/05/06. One day after my family came to visit from overseas. He was one little guy (only 3.3 lbs) but had a big heart. He played with everyone. I used to take him to car meets, malls, etc.
He was about 9 months when I put him down. I spent $$$ and still couldn't save him.

Man.. rotts are the best. My first rott died from a brain tumor. My second rott, we had to put him down b/c he developed arthritis so bad in his hip and he was too old for a second hip replacement.
When I get out of apartments, first thing is to get a rott.
Sorry to hear about your lost

Thanks for the replies and words of sympathy. Its 6:30 a.m. and 1 hour before we go to the vet. Needless to say, a very tough night.
Thought I might be able to regroup a little this morning but just writing this was enough to make me realize that's not the case. We've lost other dogs before but this one was very special.
Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers today.

I've been through this very difficult process 6 times, having been present when 3 of them were put down. I know this is a most pressing and stressful time to go through. For me, the worse one was a cat who just one day, decided to chose us as his owners. He was a short-hair domestic tabby and was the most intelligent of all of our pets. An outside cat, he had the run of the neighborhood and was quite a celebrity. People we didn't even know, knew him and would come by the house in the evenings with their young children to visit "Hobo". He died July 5, 1995 and I still carry his picture in my briefcase. As a matter of fact, I am getting a bit misty eyed as I write this right now.
God bless and keep you and your special little friend.

Sorry to hear about Toby. I lost my dog Rusty last November to cancer.
It hurts for sure but it will diminish.
Eventually you will start to think about all the good and funny things your pal did. When you do it will "smart" for just a second but then you will fill with joy as you remember all the goofy and fun things you did together. Hang in there.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. I too had to put our dog down 4 years ago. I sat in the room with the vet as he put the needle in and held Niki until she sliped away. I asked to be alone with her for a few minutes and when the dr left I stood there staring at her and then broke down and cried. I cried all the way back to the office and broke out in crying fits for a few days. Never knew that a dog could do this to me. 3 weeks later I could take it no more and went to the local animal shelter and picked out a nice dog that wasn't yappy and looked happy to see me. We named her "Toby" and she in some strange way over time has become almost exactly the same dog that Niki was.
PS Niki's ashes sit above our fireplace with a photo album with all her pics, from puppy hood to maturity.
Give yourself some time and by all means get yourself another dog.

Yeah, Shark said it best when he said, "Those of you who have a pet will understand, those who don't have a pet, simply won't."
In 1992, I had to put my 15 year old German Shepard, "Mandy" down. I walker her to the vets and she was doing better than she had for days (God did that make me feel great - walking her to her end). I was present for the entire thing and thought I was going to be Ok. But when I got back home, I was a mess. I called work and told them I would not be coming in that day, then drove down to the marina where I kept my boat, and just messed around on her for the rest of the day.. cleaning her and just sitting on the aft deck.
Like Shark said, those who have never been through something like this may not understand or appreciate what we who have go through at times like this. Especially the really good pets.. like my tabby cat Hobo. He was amazing and I am just so pleased he became part of my life. The cat I have now has no reason to be alive. He's evil. He actually attacks my wife at times. For sure, he ain't no Hobo.

I offer my condolences as well. I don't have children, but my Corgi, Hailey, is just like my child. I agree that non dog owners would not understand. My best to you and your family.

My condolences Shark. I feel your pain. We had to put our golden retriever to sleep because she developed complicated liver problems. And she was only over a year old Let the good memories with him bring solace for your grief.

I was going to post something a little earlier, but after watching that link from netclub I had to go "MAN UP" a little and then spend so time with my German Shepherd.
Very sorry to hear about your friend.

I've never had a pet, but hearing how much one can mean to a person always moves me. I wish I could experience what it's like. Especially dogs. I hope you get through this. Cancer is a horrible thing, I just lost my Latin teacher, and I understand that losing ANYONE close to you can be very difficult. Good luck.
