Smoke Plastidip Tail Lights

I searched but couldn't find a specific thread.

Has anyone used the Plastidip on their tails? or sidemarkers.

Thanks!

Why would you pastic dip your tail lights? Is there a specific design you are looking to do or are you just dipping the whole tail light?

You even commented in the thread, lol.

Personally I don't like the look of plasti dip on the markers or tails, it looks very cheap. I would get the USR side markers and if you want a different look to the tails, either customize them yourself or have AckTL05 customize them for you.

Yeah, that matte finish of plastidip looks awful on tails and sidemarkers.

AckTL05 has done some awesome tails! Just scroll through his thread and find a setup u like. def worth getting them custimized rather than cheap plasti dip. Not a fan of that stuff anyway unless using it on emblems.

i have used plastidip on my grill, rear emblem and my roof ... the grill and emblem turned out nice, not really diggin the roof but its growing on me .. it looks more like a cloth top like the older caddys came with, gloss vinyl would look alot better. but why dip your tails or anything with light? does plastidip actually let light through? it doesnt seem like it would.

That is embarrassing (old with bad memory), what search key words did you use to find that thread?

I've looked at Ack's threads, he does great work but I don't want to spend $150.

There is a smoke plastidip, more coats the darker it gets. That's why I was asking for pictures...it does let light through.

Yes, they make a smoke plastidip that lets light through. The more coats the darker it gets. I wa asking to see pictures of someone who had done it. Apparently I had seen the picture already.

I like everything PlastiDipped, except lights.

VHT is garbage, it looks brown in sunlight, not black. With a gloss clear over it it's okay but nowhere near real paint. On my other car my tails are painted with a mix of clear and black, then more clear, looks worlds better than VHT.

^ I did VHT on my Titan and it came out great and blended with the black paint. I wouldn't exactly call it garbage compared to plasti dipping your tails. Either way good luck

I've never seen in person tails dipped in the plasti smoke, thats why I'm asking.

Any chance you could post a picture of your Titan's tails? I'm not looking for blackout, just shading.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions, they will help me make and informed decision.

If you're gonna do it with Smoke, try the Glossifier too, that's the only way I can see it looking halfway good. Why not just get some smoked protection film?

I would say go with niteshades. I did them on my stratus along with color matched paint and they turned out well. The black is black, I've never seen a set of tails with a brown tinge to them.

VHT was fine on my old set of tails

I did the reflectors and the turn signal pieces of my new tails with that product as well...

Not anywhere close to being garbage

Yeah I know, but the finish will be matte, not glossy like the Nite Shades stuff. Matte on tails is just weird. You'll look at it and immediately know it was plastidipped.

Ya def need to gloss them up. I used like 2 light coats of VHT and like 4 coats of gloss clear then wet sanded and buffed them to make super glossy. gotta be smooth and glossy to look good. my opinion any way

I'm not crazy about tinting tailights, mainly because I hate not being able to see people's brake lights (especially during the day), but Plastidip could be used if you want to temporarily test it out to see if black lights look okay on your car. I found this video which shows the light being fairly visible.

Worried about the film peeling and bubbles...I've tried window tinting, hell even the screen protectors on my iphone...friggin bubbles.

Mainly I would like to see if I like the look first...or if it looks good leave it.

They look black to me.

I don't want them real dark...thats why I was thinking smoke.

No sir, both tails look good. How was the light transmission through the old tails.

...your new ones, did you tape off the clear part of the lens?

Yes it did turn out nicely.

I agree, if I dip I'll use the glossifier.

They look good. Wet sand with 600?

To answer your earlier question:

I went to Google and typed in "plasti dip taillights acurazine" and some threads came up.

I used VHT niteshades and did a couple light coats to get a smoked look. Then I wet sanded and buffed after a clear coat. Came out really well:

And here's with the lights on:

Dipping your tails would be a terrible idea IMO

Niteshades or vinyl wrap or ackTL is the way to go

The LEDs showed fine but you could barely see the turn signal.

For the new set, the whole taillight assembly was taken apart and each piece was painted.
