Looking for a TL Type S
Looking for a TL Type S
Hi Everyone,
My car got totaled and I've always wanted a type S and I think now Im going to do it. I checked on craigslist, and there are very limited choices... I would prefer black, because that just looks sick.. there's an 07 with 115k miles, fully loaded, going for 14,400...
my other option would be just to get a regular TL but the type s's are so much better... maybe an 05 TL, those look pretty tight...lemme know what you guys think if the 115k on the type s is alot.

I just bought my type-s with 100k even. Meh.
If its maintained it could be worth it and you can probably haggle a little bit too.
But you should find out more about the car as far as maintenance history like the timing belt and water pump, blah blah etc.

It's a Honda product so as long as you can tell its been cared for 115k miles will be no issue. You will want to make sure the timing belt service has been performed. If it hasn't it will need to be done right away. The base TL's are also nice, but since 3G TL's have aged and had a chance to come down in price I would recommend looking at only 07 and 08 TL's as they have many updates/changes/improvements over the earlier 04-06's. the Type S's are very nice and for sure more unique and rare than your everyday base TL, but they are by no means in a whole different league or anything. I personally prefer the Type S myself, but base TL's are nice as well.
Here is the current maintenance he says he did...

I guess I wonder why someone would have all that work done on the car at decent expense, then sell the car (unless they got bored with it).
It might be a decent buy, but personally, I'd probably be looking for something with substantially lower mileage (if I was in the market for a used car, I'd want the mileage pretty low, say 15-20k) so I'm getting essentially a new(er) car with minimal use and the depreciation already taken out of the equation.

and with it being 2013; I doubt there are any 15-20k mile '08 TL's left.
if there are a VERY few.
if the description matches the car...(being clean and well maintained) then i would have no problem scooping this TL up.
its the cars that the owners DIDNT pay any attention to; that I would be worried.
^^ This is true. If I wanted a lower mileage used car, I'd probably have to get something other than a Type S. I checked cars.com and there are a few with between 20-35 K miles, but the costs go up to the mid $20,000 area.
Okay I'm going to go check it out.. also for the body the seller wrote:
Overall good condition, minor hail damage on hood, roof, and trunk. Got quoted from Dent Wizard of $550 to remove all dings. It is my daily and doesn't bother me at all, so haven't had it fixed or am I in no rush to.
I'm worried about the transmission issue you talked about. Is that common in TL's? It does have 115k miles so it wouldnt be covered...
how would i check if there's a problem with the transmission while test driving? and how much do you think i should offer if it feels good?

The transmissions are way better in the 07-08 than in earlier years. Earlier TLs, 04-06 I believe had more issues. When you test drive, the shifts between gears up and down should be pretty smooth. You can feel the shifts but there shouldn't be any sharp jolts. When starting from a stop see if it slips. That is usually fairly easy to feel. Like a previous post, the owner sounds like a member here, ask him. Good luck. 14000 with the hail damage and 115K miles seems high to me though so beat him up about the price.

Anyway, yeah hail damage+115k does not equal to 14K so haggle him OP
Okay that guy is not going under 14k. He emailed and said he rejected 14k...my a$$! Im guessing he's going to sell for 12ish...but... i checked on acura pre owned and theres a tl type s with only 55k miles .. for 24,500... How much can I haggle with the dealer? Can i walk out with the TL for 19k....?
looks who is talking when how many day you using the car within a month? like 5 days? lol.

what do you mean, i am going to be using the car 5 days/week probably 7 lol. I drive a lot that's why I want something with less than 80k miles... the dealer has it for 24 with around 50k miles.... its such a sick car....
Oh yeah, well mine has less than 30K miles haha
And then even if you did find a Type S with such low mileage it will probably be listed in the high 20's.

Send me a private message; I may be interested in selling.
Hey I drove my car the other day. True it was the first time since before christmas.
Sell it to you for 25k though.
JTS has less than 30k miles because when it hits 30k he sells it and buys another one lmao.

21 out the door would be best.. 22 is pushing it. But like you said I'm not sure if I could bring down the price with the dealer.
Yeah it is in the chicago area. I've seen it there before. I haven't gone to check it out but I called him and he said he got offers for 14k. And I'm definitely not paying 14k for a car with 115k miles.. .and with hail damage, complete rip off.
I've seen some at the dealer with apprx 50k miles running for about 24ish...

but yeah, to find one with less than 20K like that one guy stated would be just next to impossible. They arent like Corvettes where you can find a 13 year old one with 900 miles on the odo lol. Acura owners arent that stupid!

Just curious was that car a black one listed on craigslist in the Chicago area? If so I remember seeing it up there for a while and remember a description similar to how you explained it with minor hail damage etc etc. Looked great in the pics. As for the lower mileage ones at dealers, personally I dont think your gonna be haggling them down under 20K. They just dont come down that much. Maybe a couple thousand at mostm but to get from 24.5 down to 19 just doesnt seem like something they will do. Cant hurt to try but dont be disappointed if you leave without a Type S. Also, dont forget that when buying from a dealership your gonna have to tack on sales tax and dealer fees. So even if you did get them down to 19K, when your all said and done your gonna be right back up to 22K out the door. Just something to keep in mind! Buying from private party is cheaper as far as taxes go, atleast in my state (IL).
