Scratch on Window Tinting

Does anyone know whether Acura fixed the problem with scratching on the window tinting on the 2006 models?

I had old tint on and it was scratched. The reason why is because there are two rubber strips on each side of the window, one on the inside and one on the outside. The rubber on the inside of the window does not have any felt on it and so if there is anything on the rubber piece it will scratch the tint. I just got my windows re-tinted and i had them pull the rubber strips out of the inside and they ordered felt strips and put those on. Now there is no problem. If you want to do it yourself then order it from www.duro-felt.com and it's like 20 bucks for 50 ft. Any other questions just ask.

I would like to know this also.I'm looking to get my windows tinted and planned on asking about moleskin, but if it's not necessary with 06's I won't get it done.

After reading repeated posts describing the concern, I didn't take any chances. I had it done by a place in So. Cal. that knew about the problem, has done many tint jobs for cars that require the felt/moleskin liner and did it all for $160. (regular, non-metalic film) The best part is I never have to worry about it because it is guaranteed for life. I suggest not bothering with doing it yourself...let a pro do it and put a guarantee on it!

I had my car tinted with 3M film a couple weeks ago w/ felt installed on all 4 windows. I just noticed that the driver's window had a scratch on it (most used window). My question is, are there different quality felts out there that will affect how easily the tint will scratch? I'm wondering if i should redo the felt or maybe this is something the tint shop would take care of? Suggestions?

this thread appears to be for 2006 ONLY. i hope u people with negative responses have 06's, otherwise your input will just mess with the rest of us.
bottom line: 06 tint scrathing & moleskins. wuts the deal? from experience please!!
i also need to know because i delayed getting tints because of this. i guess it wont hurt to get moleskin because it doesnt cost much anyway & cant hurt.
but i heard they may wear out after a while though

theres also a moleskin kit for our tl for $30

The 2006 seems to have the same problems. The dealership confirmed to me that there was no change in the piece that is the subject of the problems.

My suggestion is don't bother doing the mole skin yourself. Find a reputable tint place that will do it all for you and put a guarantee on it!

I just got my 06 tinted a week ago as well, and I did not have the moleskin applied. Sure enough there are linear scratches on all 4 windows. So, YES you do need felt/moleskin applied if you want to minimize the chances.

Now my question is, which durofelt kit do you get, and which one will be enough for one tl, all 4 windows?

$160 is great. I found a place in No. Cal that is familiar with the problem, and wants $240 for all 4 doors and rear window. That includes the moleskin, ceramic film(lumar)and they will tint the rear door quarter window all the way to the edge. I think I will give them a try.

Shouldn't this be handled by the dealership under warranty as it is an Acura problem??

flnsx is a vendor here who sells moleskin. http://members.aol.com/setecsolutions/mole.html

Even though Acura may have caused the problem because of the design of the plastic strips, the Acura new car warranty does not cover damage to the tint.

Thanks Ron!

I also just worked with my supplier to produce a finer more absorbing felt/mole skin made specifically to keep window tint from scratching.

I also paid for an extra strong adhesive backing as well!

You can do the install in less than an hour.

i just had my windows tinted. no mole skin, but they assured me that they didn't have to tuck the rubber under the window like most tinters do ... he just pulled the rubber out of the way and tucked the tint underneath of it... i only have 1 tiny scratch on the drivers side door.. really cant even see it... no moleskin.. he told me moleskin isn't all its cracked up to be bc that also traps dirt that can cause scratches... paid 160 here in pa.. another place wanted 250 plus 30 per door for moleskin.

My dealer handled mine under warranty. There are a few very minor scratches after my car was tinted the second time. But, I can live with them. But, if I develop major scratches again, it's going right back.

No problem. The place is in Orange County. It is called Best Window Tinting, located at 3045 Edinger Avenue in Tustin. 800-272-1700. Tell them you want the felt installed to avoid the scratching. They know all about it and are true pros.

I have read several posts about scratches on tint. My 06 was tinted a few weeks after I purchased it. I get a vertical scratch on both windows. It is about 3 inches from the rear of the window. I do not think this has anything to do with moleskin. I can hear something hitting the window everytime I roll the window up or down. I took it to the dealership and they said they had to order a special part. I never made it back.

Now I get to listen to a plastic vibrating sound at several different frequencies. My bet is the service tech peeled back the plastic lining inside the door panel and didn't glue/adhere it back.

I am so frustrated, but I'm not sure I want the dealer doing any further work on it. The vibrating sound is much more annoying than the scratch!

This is so wrong! How can you expect the factory to cough up warranty dollars for you to have non-factory accessories damage? This is not a "defect". Windows are tinted from the factory. In many states, adding aftermarket tint to front side windows is illegal.
Let the factory use their dollars for legit claims, like transmission failures!

Durafelt will come off in a matter of months. It is not designed to work for this application.

Trust me. I have people emailing me all day telling me their DuraFelt fell off.

I'm not sure about others, but there is no doubt in my mind that the problem I am having is a factory issue. I have the exact same vertical line in the exact same place on both driver and passenger front windows, and as I mentioned in my post, I can hear something hitting the window as it travels up and down.

UPDATE!
The local dealer special ordered part # 72375-SEP-A01 WEATHERST for my driver's door. The dealer installed it and asked me to see if it fixed the problem. If fixed, he offered to reimburse me for the cost to re-tint.

Unfortunatley, the part did not fix the problem. I can still see and hear a distinct scratch as the window goes up and down.
