RPM rises when upshifting

First let me say hello to everybody, I have been checking the site out for a while and finally got a 05 TL 6spd. The question I have is WRT upshifting. I noticed today that when I shift up at WOT the rpm goes up about 500 before it goes down. For example lets say i am at 5000 rpm on 3rd when i shift into 4th the car will goto 5500 before it goes down to 4000. Is this normal? Does this happen to anybody else?

While I have owned one other car that did this A LOT, my '04 TL manual does not (thank God). As soon as I let up on the throttle, engine speed starts to drop off.

^^i think you misunderstood. rpms do jump slightly, engine speed drops off.

??

Engine speed and RPMs (in this context) are one and the same. There is no difference.

I had a 2000 SVT Contour that had a throttle hang "feature" to burn off residual fuel puddling in the intake manifold by hanging engine speed, and frequently raising it significantly, between upshifts. There was a "street" way around this but it was only good for a few days.

The manual TL does hold engine speed for a few seconds at the point where the ECU believes it should be for the next gear choice on upshifts. You can prove this by just holding the clutch in and watching the tach after shifting to the next higher gear. But this is not the same thing as having the RPMs raise between shifts. Generally that is caused by either the ECU doing this deliberately or the driver's foot is still into the throttle a little bit.
