The car should definitely go over 100. I have been over 100 many times, highest was around 140. Someone on here posted their car felt sketchy at this point just wanted to share that my car felt very stable at 140mph. At the track I was doing extremely hard braking coming off the main straight into turn 1 at about 125mph and the car was still very stable. Can't say the same for the 04 GTO that was right in front me during a lap that nearly went off the track.

Your car is getting shaky before 100 mph? That's not normal.

IIRC all 04-06 models and 07-08 6MT Type-S models are limited by drag to 150-160mph (varies obviously). They do have an electronic limiter, but it's pretty much unreachable in stock form. 07-08 base and Type-S models with the 5AT are limited to 130mph, which is reachable in stock form.

Here's a video of a 5AT base model (the slowest of all TLs) easily breaking 100mph.

Ouch, that was like 17 seconds to 100.

On a side note, I got over excited when I saw this thread title. I thought maybe impeachment proceedings against Cuomo had been commenced.

The governor is not a "piece" on the car. It's the ECU programming. No TL has a 100mph governor. Under the right conditions mine has buried the speedometer. Either the speedo is off by 10mph or the base models do not have a 150mph governor.

FWIW, the 5at will hit top speed in 4th gear. Top it out in 4th and shift into 5th and it will start losing speed.

Have you tried using the sport shifting mode? or perhaps resetting your ECU?

A Tl is not a race car it's a luxury sedan. The large percentage of owners get in and drive and not care about making small gains on bolt ons. It is 2013 and manufacturers are putting in more technical automatics that shift faster and are more efficient then manuals. Get with the times.

No, it's the internet. And most people here hook up Tl's and think they are fast. Therefore to me it seems he was being serious.

Who in their right mind gets a manual in a slow ass FWD car that will get beat by just about any automatic out there? Some of us realize the TL is transportation. It's gets us from point a to point b in relative comfort and style and is an all around nice car but shifting our own gears is not worth it in this particular car. No offense to the manual drivers, just making a counter point.

The new 6,7, and 8speed autos aren't so much for performance, the additional gears help with fuel economy keeping the engine in a more efficient rpm range no matter the road speed. It also means being able to keep the converter locked most of the time resulting in improved mpg (no slip, less heat). With better variable displacement and overall more efficient pumps along with a DBW system that works with the trans, mpg between an auto and manual is a non issue.

If I owned a Vette or any other semi powerful to powerful RWD sports cars I would own a manual just because they're more fun and it would be a weekend car, but certainly not for the mpg or the almost non existent performance increase.

If anything it's more logical to buy an automatic in 2013 since the only real downsides to an auto are purely personal preference vs in the 50s-part of the 80s when most autos were 2-3 speeds with non lock converters, very indfficient converters, and there was a large gap in mpg and performance in the small engine heavy cars. Even back then in a quick car, manuals weren't much quicker. I honestly wish my turbo car would work with a manual for the fun factor but it would be so much slower I could never bring myself to swap a manual into it.

Even though im one of those manual tl owners i hate how right you are(you usually are though so we are used to it). But if the tl is our dd and we dont have a faster/much faster car like you for instance then, the tl 'seams' like a fast car. With the 3g tls there are more benefits to having a 6 spd over the auto like: weak auto transmission that might give out, sluggish shifting, mpg, faster, sound, power band, etc...all arguable maybe yes but still personal preference in the end.

I really agree on the sound. Manuals sound so much better with exhaust. The more or less steady state drone from the autos when accelerating normally. I can take a high stall auto with exhaust but the TL definitely sounds better in manual form.

All of this. I don't track my car, I don't street race people.

People ask me all the time. Is that thing fast. I say no, its quick but its not fast. I didn't buy it to be fast.

I bought it because I got old. I want leather seats, A/C that is both installed and works, touch screen and voice activated controls. I don't have a big sub in the trunk or gadgets everywhere.

Yes my car is lowered and with rims. But it does not have a big intake, or power adding gadgets.

I just enjoy a manual. I love my car. I will continue to do mods that i enjoy. But will never think its a fast car.

And the sound of my exhaust in the morning is 2nd only to a 5.0 mustang with a good exhaust on it.

That can all change with a turbo build. We have a handful of guys on the site that have turbos and are making 500+ hp. Granted that takes a lot of money and time, also not worth it to most people cause of the fwd

Lets say you do take your car to a drag strip or a track, is there any way to make an 07 tl-s at reach a higher speed than just 130? Do you have to completely replace your ECU or can you possibly tune it? when you reach 4th gear, my car hits a brick wall-- it almost feels like it drops out of vtec?
thoughts?

the notorious 4th gear wall.
its a limitation on the gearing of the tranny.

if a TL did 130 at the track; it would be a 10 second car!!!
lol there is no way that is happening.

Because of the gearing of 4th gear; you will ALWAYS fall flat.

haha that is true! As much as I'd love a 10 second tl, or even just to see one, I know what they are limited to in a 1/4 mile.

however, is it possible to re-gear your transmission on the auto to reach a higher top speed? (please don't laugh. im pretty new to the whole car thing)or is it simply that acura dropped the ball on the auto type s top speed?

I don't plan to supercharging or adding a turbo to my daily driver(unless I could be convinced), but how would that affect the tranny?

If the ECU would allow it and you had more HP the stock gearing would allow substantially higher top speed.

Dropped the ball? This is a semi-luxury car built and designed primarily for the US market which has no need for speeds any higher.

The TL is not stable at 150 mph even going straight. I have been there a few times and the car just feels unstable. I have never hit the speed limiter with wide tires or while the car was boosted, but fuel cutoff at 150 mph is scary and dangerous as hell. The 6 speed will hit 138-140 at the 7200 rpm fuel cutoff in 4th so it's not hard to do if you are crazy enough. The fuel cutoff unsettles the cars weight and any little mistake going that fast is going to end badly.

lol! i got to 140 in my 05 tl and i almost p*ssed my pants. The road became narrower, other cars going 90 looked like parked cars, at moments i felt like i was gliding, the steering wheel felt super soft n sensitive like it wasnt connected to anything. i dont think ill do it again lol!

dropped the ball as in it's there type s. the 05 base tl reaches 150? but the 07 tl sport doesn't? I also agree that there is absolutely no reason to go that fast...haha talk about jail time-- but again, im new to cars, especially really nice ones like acura; im just wanting to wrap my head around everything.

Speak for yourself lol. If my TL hit fuel cutoff at 140mph it would probably take 10 seconds to realize it lol.

I totally understand the unsettling of the weight though. The few times I've been up there have been when it was stock, RSB, and the last time was with the whole package, most notably the large 29mm FSB.

I got started in the GN on the rev limiter at 179mph. You think the TL is scary, try pushing a brick through the air on 80s suspension. Being young I let off abruptly and even though it was not accelerating at the time, it was an unsettling feeling, the car got wiggly and that was the last time I ever did that.

I don't suggest anyone go into triple digits but one of the largest improvements to stability was the H&R FSB, decent suspension travel, and a lot of rebound damping.
