Remote start and with 6MT
Remote start and with 6MT
I might be buying an 06 TL 6MT soon. I want to have a remote start installed. Has anyone added a good quality "stand alone" remote starter that could be triggered by the OEM fob? If so which one? How is the range on the OEM fob? Exactly what is the process you go through when you stop the car, park it, get out and shut the car off with the remote?
get compustar.. have to use they're remote.. when the car is on and in park.. pull up emergency break... pull out key.. car stays on.. open door.. shut door- car turns itself off.. now you can remote start
isn't that dangerous? Cause, what if you're on a hill, and you remote start the car. The e-brake isn't going to stop the car from rolling down unless the incline is less than a certain degree. Unless you can remote start it while the car is in 1st gear, but then wouldn't it just stall?

This is possible. It's about the installation. I know alot of shop won't do it due to the risk of someone leaving it in gear and it gets remote started.
I have a remote system on my EK hatch that's a manual and it works fine

Please don't quote me on this, but I think they (the installers) use a magnetic switch. For example when the car is in neutral the magnetic switch completes the circuit and the car starts. In any of the gears the circuit is broken and no start.
Let us know how you make out.

there was someone on the TSX forum that had a remote starter installed in his 6 spd, and a valet used the remote start and the car went crashing into something. Messed the driver side panel and the front wheel pretty badly.
^^ i remember that. Did quite a bit of damage i think. Remote start on a manaul is dangerous and I would not recommended it. I would rather have the ability to park while in gear rather than having remote start. There might be some info on a remote started floating somewhere around here.
My friend had a remote start on his SHO with a manual transmission. He always left the car in neutral with the e-brake on.
One day, he took it in to the shop. While picking it up, he did the remote start and started signing his paperwork. The car was left in gear by the repairman, and every time the starter turned over the motor, the car lurched forward. It ended up hitting another car in the lot, but luckily the damage was fairly minimal.
After that experience, he took apart his shifter and put magnetic switches (the type used to detect open windows and doors for home burgler alarms) so it would detect if the car was in gear. If I remember correctly, he had to put in several sensors as it was not designed to detect neutral, it was detecting if the shifter was in gear.

Doesn't that seem like an awful lot of time and effort, just so you don't have to turn the key?
Is this really possible for the TL ? I just got my 06' Auto TL and the dealer told me that they cant put a remote start because of the Navi and all that other BS....is this true? anyone with auto TL that has remote start ?
You still have to turn the key. I have remote start on my TL (Auto), and if I do not put the key in, the engine will kill if the brake or gas pedal is pressed. Also, it the key were not put in, the steering would be locked (and probably the shifter too since it is an auto).
Here in Hawaii, it is pretty warm all year round. Remote starting lets me cool the car a little with the air conditioner. For you cold climate ppl, you could warm up the car with the heater.
That and I like to warm up the engine a little before I take off.
coykiam: I can't think of any reason the NAV would be adversely affected... I could not tell you though as I do not have NAV

I had the compustat on a 5spd integra, it worked great, a bit pricey, but it had the FM trasmitter.....but I wouldnt want to lose the OEM remote for some reason.
They can retrofit stuff into the OEM remotes, but I don't know if those systems are 6spd safe.

People it is failsafe!! With the sequence that has to be followed, it is impossible to remote start the car while in gear. Car has to be in neutral, running, pull e-brake.. remove key, car stays on then when the door shuts, the car shuts off and it is ready. if you then unlock the doors, the sequence is cancelled and you have to go through it again.
A friend of mine has a manual transmission Nissan Xterra. He was looking to get remote start installed and the shop he goes to told him they won't put them on manual transmission cars anymore cause they had one start and just take off going forward :-/
CompuStar was the first to create a remote start that is safe for a manual transmission. Now if I were to park my car on a hill...I would't want to remotely start it to begin with. Everything that the compustar does to make it safe is all in the Brain. I would only have the compustar installed by a certified compustar installer. It is spendy but wait till you see all the features it has to offer.

I had a clifford alarm w/ remote start on an old car that was a manual transmission. The alarm was specifically for manual vehicles. Basically, when you're exiting the vehicle, you have to press a specific button on the remote while the key is still in the ignition (and the car is still running). When you press the button to activate the remote start, the system checks wheter or not you have the vehicle in nuetral and the e-brake on. When it runs the check and everything is good-to-go, you can remove the key off the ignition and the vehicle remains on (similar to a turbo timer). Once you exit the vehicle and activate the alarm, the car will shut off. As an added safety feature, if the alarm is triggered while parked... the vehicle will NOT remote start. I had the alarm for over 3 years and I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM. Like everyone else stated above... IT'S GOING TO COST YOU....
I have remote start on my 03 Maxima 6speed. Have to leave it in neutral of course..but my car has a built in neutral safety switch....so it WILL NOT start in gear EVER. Maybe you guys have it too and you just don't know? FSM anyone?
to bypass the clutch you need to cut the 2 wires on the clutch pedal switch and splice them together. I had an UltraStart alarm on my 93 5 speed integra, and when I sold it I switched it into my 3000gt vr4. This is an excellent alarm, and the model I had was the fm frequency which worked and paged you from A TRUE 1 Mile Radius. Check them out here: http://www.ultrastarters.com/
Man just does no seem like it is worth the effort. No matter what happens and who does the work, if you have a warranty issue I can't imagine them being cool with safeties being jumped. Its basically a modded car. Unless you live in Texas, parking on hills are a fact of life and that e-brake is not a guarantee. Get the Auto and call it a day....

The range is below average from my experience with other companies like Jeep, Ford and Nissan.
