Rear Fog Light?
Rear Fog Light?
Im curious if anyone has installed a rear fog lamp on their TL..
A lot of cars in the UK have these installed, for when its very foggy out you run the fog light on to aid in people seeing your car.
There is the type that one would have to cut out a section and install it in the rear bumper, similar to the DC2's and civic's..
Here is one on a S2K

and a DC2

Or there is the Raybrig style which mounts below the bumper with a bracket..I think this one may be more tricky to fit on the Rear of the TL due to bumper design but what do yall think??

Considering doing this mod...whats yall's thoughts?

yea all the pics you posted were of the EDM rear fogs. the 3rd Gen TL wasn't made for the European market so finding an actual rear fog is gonna be impossible. therefore you'd have to cut it into the bumper yourself, wire a switch, etc. to pull it off.
end of story, don't do it. not something for the TL.

It's a good thought to be courteous to other drivers by having this installed (OEM or aftermarket), but you'll still get stupid people who don't have enough common sense to even turn their headlights on when it rains or is foggy out. I doubt this will make them more cautious.

This is the way i thought of pulling it off:
If you see the Jaguar S-Type, it has the rear fogs. What it does it turn on the rear brake lights to full intensity (as if you were braking). It however does not turn the 3rd brake light on....So when your driving you see the tails lighted up and when you brake the 3rd brake light comes on....
I am thinking of pulling this off on the TL....

A forum member once took out his side-markers [or had spares] and put them in the lower grille of the rear bumper. It gave it that TSX/4G rear-reflector look and it was really clean.
edit: Found him, forum member: Bzyrice.

Do what that member did [I can't find the thread or pics] then do what a buddy of mine did, I think he's on azine [he's on TAC] as "racinggear".
Notice the left rear reflector:
The left rear bumper reflector was turned into a rear-fog. Very clean and subtle. Perhaps this is the best option for the TL as well if you want to add a rear-fog [or rear reflectors].

Imo, dont embed it in the tails. Itll just look like you have a bulb out.
Maybe an integration into the lower middle faux grille on the o7+++.... Like this gtr for example

A lot of the German cars that are shipped to the US have the setup for it .. you just need to put in a Euro light switch and a little wiring .. If I remember right my Passat had it but they are only on the driver side.
We don't travel at the speeds they do over there so the tail lights sufice. But like said aboe .. most arent smart enough to turn them on in foggy conditions.

A lot of those folks do it for the euro/JDM look. In all honesty the TL was never designed for this so it looks odd on it. However if you really do want one, take a look at the CDM (chinese Domestic Market) TL and it's lower bumper cover. It's basically the new 2007 rear bumper but the cutout has the reverse lights and the rear fog lights built into it.
As you can see, it appears they integrated the rear fog light into the slot that is left blank on the 0-08 TL.
Car companies should just start making the tail lights stay on all the time like front daytime running lights, on all cars. It would help us see people who don't even turn on their lights in bad weather.

Said it before and said it again...
In my opinion, a rear-fog-IN-the tail light looks weird. If I see it... I'll just think you have a bulb-out. If it's lower and off-centered--[or directly center and low] then I'd think 'rear-fog'.
Sounds weird... you sure your parking lights just aren't messed up?

That's actually how it's supposed to be. A lot of the European manufacturers run the driver's side brake light (or another light in the driver's side rear lamp with similar brightness to the brake light) as the rear fog lamp. You can see it on a few BMWs, Mercedes, Audis and Volvos.
I agree with you though, it's kind of a stupid system, since it's way too easy to confuse the rear fog lights for brake lights, or just someone with a wiring problem.
I think the Asian system of having the rear fog lamp as a separate lamp that is centered and mounted low in the bumper makes way more sense.

I do like the idea... but not the execution of it.
