Re-tinting the rear window?

So I got a 30% 3M HP tint on my rear window, but its definitely too light for my taste. I want to get it darker, possibly to about 20%, so is there a good way to do this? I figured the tinter could take off the old tint and just re-do it, but I heard there is a good chance that the he could damage the defroster lines. I've also read that you could tint over the old tint, but i'm not sure if that's a smart idea either. Do you guys have suggestions?

its not really a problem, tint shops do this for a living....now that being said, if its tint that has been on the car for 10 years and it looks like shit, then yea, there might be a chance for damage, but newer tint, and good quality tint that hasnt been on very long will come off easy with no damage...let the experts at the tint shop tell you how they want to redo it...

i would just get it redone

I had all my tint removed (sides and rear) and new tint put in within a 2 hour time span. Nothing was damaged. The first tint was applied about 1.5 years ago and was a quality tint so removing it was not a problem. Talk with the tinter, let them know your concerns and they should treat you well. Although, you probably will sign a contract saying they are not responsible for any damage to the rear window defroster or radio antenna -- but that's just a legality. Good luck.

Personally, I would pay the tint shop to remove the tint, as there would be a lesser liklihood of damage to the defroster wires (not saying it can't happen). They have the proper heat guns and knowhow for the job. I had the back half of my car tinted in 15%, and even at night, it's not too dark.

I'd suggest just getting your current tint in the rear removed and have new tint applied. Not difficult at all.

i was going to go with 20. how is the visibility at night with the 15%?

3M FX HP tint is metallic tint. i have had my tint for a few months now and i have not had any issues with my navigation or radio reception. i believe you will find more issues with your radio reception if you listen to AM radio. i mainly listen to my ipod or FM

30 on the front and 15 on the back is going to be very noticeable difference. Hopefully that doesn't bother you with having alot darker tint on the rear.

just so we're clear im talking about re-tinting the rear "windshield" not the rear windows.

yeah i know there will be a difference..but im not too worried about that since it is the rear of the car. ive noticed that the inside of the car with 30% is still pretty clear from the rear so i would like to go a little darker. ill probably just play it safe and go with the 20% as there is not much of a difference between the 15 and 20.

thanks for everyones input
