Questions for the TL Experts

I have put on approximately 5300 miles, and purchased the vehicle March 18th. I'm taking my car in today to get:

* Oil change (im guessing thats what the service soon light means!)
* Memory settings are way screwed up (says some crazy nonsense about needing the remote)
* Rear bumper checked because of an accident (no visable damage)
* Tires checked (again, vibration is killing me)
* Starting hesitation (still happening, after they said they couldnt fix it)

I need advice on 3 things (prob cause im too lazy to use the search):

1) How much do you guys inflate your tires? i have them all at 42 psi right now, which i know is definitely incorrect. I have the turanza el42's, please advise.

2) what kind/type of oil are you guys using?

3) is there touch up paint available from the dealer? i have a small nic on the front bumper probably from a rock.......

***also...had rear parking assist on my escalade...thinking about getting it done on the TL, anyone out there who has it have any complaints?

Thanks guys, you rock
Justin

Karizma,
Can you please comment on the problem you had starting hesitation? I think we may have the same issue. Sometimes, it takes couple seconds of cranking before enine gradually revs up while starting. Are we talking about the same thing?

Thanks

If you look on Ebay they sell touch up paint pens. One side of the pen holds the paint while the other end holds the clearcoat. I got one offa ebay for like $15 but it's well worth it. The conventional touch up paint they sell at dealerships come in a tube and not a pen which makes it harder to apply.

ak2001---yeah this is a pretty common problem from what i have read from everyone....something about ulev......regardless, not acceptabloe to me and im taking it back. it sounds like its ruining the engine!

al900rr---they have matching pens for our colors? that sounds awesome, im going to check now....

caball88---read the tires themselves, they say 40 or 44psi, something like that--i just wanted to know what everyone keeps theirs at and if they have differences between the front and rear tires. doesnt yours look low at 32psi??

If I'm not mistaken the problem you are having with the engine starting up is normal, I remember reading in the owners manual that the car may take longer to start up at times in order to lessen the emissions during startup.

Justin,

1) 42 psi could be ok for your tires, but not's the best setup for your 04TL. Based on the owner manual, if you read :o, it should state 32/32 for 5AT, 35/32 for 6MT, or 39/35 for high-performance/high-speed driving... (maybe I'm wrong here)

I stay 39/35 for my EL42s TU2.

2) Acura 5w-20 or other 5w-20 or M1 0w-20... the owner manual is clearly stating this, too.

3) Based on the owner manual says, if you stay in ignition II for a few seconds before cranking your engine, you car could be much easier to be started.

There is a big old sticker in the driver's door jamb, just below the latch, which gives the tire pressures for your car, which is 32psi front and rear. Anything up to 35 is ok if you like the harder ride.

The 44 on the tire is the MAXIMUM tire pressure.

that's what i thought the sidewalls of a tire usually don't tell you the recommened tire pressure because it can be different from car to car. they tell you the max which is what the tire can handle safely.

thanks for the help, keep em coming

ron a: thanks for the info, ill be sure to check it out.

retsy: sounds good, i guess we can pretty much keep the PSI's at our own driving discretion.....depending on how we like the ride. I just lowered all 4 to 40 for now, ill figure out whats right for me.

ive also tried the ignition ii trick for the hesistation, it still happens from time to time.

ill letcha guys know what i hear from the dealer...

jss1--thanks, did you get it with the car when you purchased it? i hate the things on the outside of the bumper--are their any aftermarket systems that go BEHIND the bumper?

caball--the memory nonsense---under keyless memory settings, it says must be linked or configured to a remote or something.....this was out of no where, i have had the memory set for a while.

when its linked to the remote it will adjust the seats to the memory associated to the remote. if key fob 1 is associated with memory setting 1 when you unlock the doors with teh remote it will automatically adjust the seats and mirrors if it has been changed.

I got it with the car. The looks don't matter to me as not hitting something is more important. I don't even notice them anymore. Most systems are sonar based so they need a clear view.

Just for comparison, I have my 18s at 39/36 (Front/Rear) per the door jamb sticker that came with the wheels for the Automatic transmission.

Now I understand why so many TL owners are complaining about the hard ride!
40 PSI?!

The higher the tire pressure, the harder the ride. Not only is it more uncomfortable, it will also lead to more of the infamous RATTLES! 32 front/32 rear for me. Great ride, no rattles.

Correct me if I'm wrong. The max tire pressure is also supposed to be measured when the tire is cool (not driven on).

you might be on to something here dseag.

maybe the question then is: What is the tire pressure you guys are all using, and do you have any rattles?

also...any other options on touch up paint other than ebay?

I have mine set at 32/32 front/rear.

Would I get better gas mileage by upping the pressure a bit in both?

Yes, generally higher PSI = better gas mileage, but it also = rougher ride.

Also better to check PSI when tires are cold. If you've been driving for a while you need to subtract at least 2 PSI to get an accurate reading.

Higher pressure may result in better gas milage but it also wears the center of the tire more. Pay now or pay later. Considering the pennies your saving in gas, I'd go with whats on the sticker that came with your TL. Tires are expensive.

you guys are right, im def getting way better gas mileage at 40psi on each tire than 32psi, which is what it was at. i mean its noticably different, you should try it on one tank just to see.

oh and yes, when im busy NOT driving my car, ill "RTFM". In the meatime, "KMFA" :fingerfawk:

thanks again for your guys help, this site is really amazing for help when your dealerships flat out suck!

May I ask a dumb question?

I know the door label/manual says 32/32 PSI (5AT)...but that is for the EL42's.

Does it make a difference if I have replaced with Pilot Sport A/S's? (same size, 235/45/17)??

In other words, is "recommended PSI" recommended for the 1. car or 2. OEM tire?

Thanks, and please excuse my naivete.

Read the tires - now there is a rational approach.

Those markings indicate the max PSI. The factory settings of 32 are the best combo of ride, wear, mileage, and shock immunity. Believe me, I am a memeber of the SAE, and have had lunch with development engineers from AHM, and many other mfrs. They do not not just pick numbers out of air. 40 PSI would buy them a fractional improvement in gase mileage, and better numbers on the EPA emissions cycle - but they do not recommend them because it makes the car susceptible to impact fractures, and premature center wear. You can play with a few PSI to get more/less understeer, but I would not recommend much over a few, unless yu are planning to do some sustained high speed crusing in the 100+ mph range.

Just remember, tire pressure goes up when you drive for some time. I would becareful of pumping to the max PSI because that's a cold tire pressure. Driving can increase the pressure above the limit. Don't want any possible blowouts at high speeds as these cars are so easily capable of doing.

On the other hand, maybe we can finally rid the dreaded flat spot. LOL!!!

I keep my tires at 32 front/32 rear. Ride is good and so is MPG. I manually calculate my MPG w/ the calculator in the Nav system. Last fill-up... 22 MPG, mostly stop-and-go. No complaints here.
