Power window controls

Found my first really anoying thing with the TL. When the power window "lock" button is pressed (to prevent children from playing around with the window), the driver also can't operate the other windows. That's just stupid. I also would really like the lock button to only affect the rear seat passengers, since, presumably young children won't be riding the front seat.

I know, I don't like that. my 00TL did the same thing, and on top of that the button light goes off too when locked.

It should be easy to bypass in the wiring...
I'll look into that using the electrical/service manual...

Hmm... I thought lights going out was a neat idea. I first noticed this back in mid 90's in the Mercedes S-Class. I thought it was a cool feature. At night, when you lock the windows, the lights go out and passengers can't find the controls in the dark. No need to, since it won't work for them anyway.

Also, it really doesn't bother me that it prevents even the drivers from rolling down the window. It's kinda nice when you first get your windows tinted. At least for for 3 days.

This has been discussed here, and I also find it odd.

I suppose there are two schools on this as far as "child safety"

1) The driver should be able to open all windows regardless of if they are locked or not. They can then control a childs window.

2) A driver SHOULDN'T be able to control windows besides their own when they are locked, so they do not accidentally open a childs window (and the child jumps out, falls out, spits out, etc)

Should be a keyless option actually (as well as child locking doors).

Would be great if there were even more keyless options, klike auto dim on rearview mirror, last item used on radio etc.

I don't mind if the window buttons going off when disabled, but the "window lock" button on the driver side should always be lit so you can find it in the dark (if you are a visual person).

Doesn't "window lock" button always stays lit? Even when you lock the windows. I thought this was the case, if not, you're right window lock button should be always lit.

And why does the car have lock and unlock "buttons".

It isn't 1970... Are those really necessary?

Is that from someone without children?

(or maybe yours were/are just much better behaved than mine)

Oh Sorry... I wasn't clear and you mis-red what I meant.

I didn't mean WINDOW lock buttons.. I meant the BUTTONS on the doors.. the actual button that sticks up that has disappeared from many cars for a long time.. most have something on the door itself...

I do not like having an actual button there.

Yea, I agree with you on that. The door unlock button is stilly. I have to set it up to unlock automatically (shift into park I think I have it set to) since having it lock and then having the back seat people have to pull up the button is stupid. I like the "pull twice on the handle but only if the car is stopped" method.

They don't have to pull the button up if you set the Keyless system to open all the doors when you put it in park.

I normally keep it on driver only unless I am bringing alot of people around for a legnth of time, and then I change it.

I just don't like having these silly buttons!

Mike

Right, that's how I have it set up so that the people in back aren't "trapped" (by having to mess with the button). The problem is that I'd rather the doors _not_ unlock until someone inside actually wants to get out, but I'd like the action by which you tell the car "Please let me out" be something other than pull up the knob. I just want people inside to be able to use the normal door latch if they want to get out (but if they don't, have the door continue to stay locked from the outside).

This seems like a fairly normal "use case" from my point of view, and is the way other cars I've had have operated.

In the name of RESEARCH, I went and rented a Toyota today.

I used the window lock button.
The driver was unable to control the other windows, with the window lock button in the lock position.

Seems like it's some kind of Japanese thing.

Oh well.

For whatever it's worth, I also have a 2003 Honda Pilot and it does the same thing. While I appreciate the lock (I do have little kids that play with the buttons) I haven't been able to figure out a rationale for the driver to be unable to operate them when locked. All other cars work the way you'd expect, that the lock only locks out the non-driver buttons, but the driver's still work for all windows.

So I think it's a Honda thing, but I still can't figure out a rationale.

In fact, ever since I can remember... since electric windows were a big ol OPTION, and they had those little silver metallic controls, the driver was ALWAYS able to open all the windows even with the passengers locked out.

Could be a domestic vs Jap thing... GM vehicles have always worked as above...
