Potential TL Owner

Hello Everyone!

Meeting with couple sellers for the 06-08 TL this Sunday! 99.9% I'll be picking one up.

This will be my first Acura

Don't know much about TL/Acura in general, any tips or what I should look out for when test drive/examining the car?

thanks!

Get the updated 07/08 models if your able. As I TL stated above, earlier automatics have the potential for issues more so than later years. Besides that they have updates and additions inside and out.

The price tags on the 07+ are too much for me since this is going to be my 2nd car. I'm actually looking at a 06 with 65K miles and another 06 with 75K, both priced at $13K, not sure if that is a good price

I picked up the 06 TL!

Noob questions:
I like the 07+ taillights and rear bumper, will those fit in the 06?

If you go 6MT, be aware of trouble shifting into 3rd gear. If it does happen to be an issue on a test drive, I would use that to your advantage to knock some money off. Seems like an expensive fix, but all you really need is to change tranny fluid win GM synchromesh ($35) and youll be all set.

Price seems in the ball park. I got my 06 6MT with 94k for $11,750 a little over a year ago. Check kbb and use that as a guide.

yes they will fit with minor modification, however you will need to run the fog down by the bumper since the fog light of 04-06 sat is the DRL for 07-08 TL.

Don't let the shills here scare you away from an 04-06 TL

Just make sure all the maintenance is in order and try to find an 04-06 TL that has been mostly highway driven (at least 80%)

This guy has an 04 TL with 225k+ miles and claims that it still has the original transmission and most of his driving, 90%, has been highway miles

Good luck!

I just bought an 07 TL not too long ago. Been driving it for a couple months now - no problems at all. Keeping up with the maintenance myself. I drive 50 miles a day on the highway and its a smooth, comfortable ride to work. It's exactly what I needed. It's my first Acura and I couldn't be happier. Enjoy it, man!

Am looking at purchasing an 06 TL as well. SUpposed to ink the deal tomorrow.

Didn't want to start a new thread since its the same question, so I hope the OP doesn't mind me chiming in with some questions of my own.

THe TL am looking at is a 2006 6 speed manual with Tech package. Single owner, clean title, 82k miles. Price agreed on is 12,700$. AM getting it inspected at the local Acura dealership.

Anything in particular I should be looking out for?

The one thing i noticed when driving it was the first gear enagagement was a bit tough. Probably that I wasn't used to the clutch on this car. Moving up through the gears it felt great. A very minor shudder on braking. Needs new pads and rotors turned is my guess. Maybe check wheel balancing too.

Plenty of tread on Toyo tires. The guy has a stack of service records for the car, so am pretty sure it is in good nick. But I'd like to avoid any surprises.

In addition, am already shopping around for some mods, want to black out the car with tinting, CAI, Cat back exhuast, possibly HID headlights, Stop Tech pads, fresh oil all around.

sachu the '06 you are buying already has HID headlights. As far as a CAI goes, unless you really like the sound you can save yourself a lot of money by leaving the intake alone. The TL comes from the factory with a CAI. Some say that it's more of a "semi-CAI." Truth is, you will not see much of a gain, if any, with an aftermarket intake except for the noise. And whatever you do, stay away from a short ram intake. You'd be sucking in warmer air with that.

Manual transmission owners do say that the 6MT TL is hard one to get used to. That could by why 1st was a bit rough for you.

So I picked this up last weekend, 2006 TL with 59K miles, not sure what package it is. How can you tell?
It has memory seats, heated seats, and navigation.

It's a base model with navigation.

The other trim is A-spec which includes a full lip kit, .5 inch lower suspension and a few other very minor things.

Congratulations on the purchase!

Congrats OP!

MarcoNorthPolo..Duly noted! will stay away from aftermarket CAI and great to know its got HIDs as standard.

So, I jsut got back from the Acura dealership where they inspected the car for me.

THe main things they found were:
  • 7 year/105k mile timing belt required even though it has only 82k miles. Quoted 925$ including labor (wonder if this is just the belt or the water pump, tensioners, etc being replaced as well)
  • Manual shifter is excessively stiff. POssibly due to short shifter the owner has installed (??)
  • Brake rotors need replaced on the front (brembos?). needs pads front and rear. Quoted $420 for just the front rotors
  • rearview mirrors chatter. motors probably need replaced (210$ estimate)

Then the usual stuff like all the fluid flushes and air filter changes. Clutch, tranny, engine, brake, power steering.

The timing belt job can be DIY'ed?!

Thoughts?!

I need to make a decision real quick.

Seller agreed to split cost of timing belt with me to knock off the price of the car.

So only 2 models in the 04-06 TL? Base and A-Spec?

With my Lexus there is a Lexus website where you can log in, put in your VIN number and it'll show you everything about the car like warranty, recalls, etc... Does Acura have something like that?

Yes only those two models, they basically came fully loaded from the factory.

Not sure about how it works with using your VIN to understand the history of the car but I'm sure if you call the dealership they have to disclose that information.

The styling on the 3rd gen in IMHO is still relevant today. Add some 18" or 19" rims and it makes the car look like it's a new model.

Congrats on the purchase. It really is a great car!

8TL- you can always buy the ASPEC lip kit and add it on to the car. You can also buy the suspension and ASPEC wheels if you like.

Sacho- congrats on the purchase. Looks like your already has the ASPEC wheels.

That's not the case for Canada, I was doing some research to find out which model I have and I found out there are four models in 2004, there's the base model which is your every day car, then we have the Dynamic which can be visually distinguished by it's smoked side markers on the front fenders as well as having hands free calling built into the stereo, next is the Navigation model which is the same thing but with a different selection of factory supplied wheels and obviously comes with the navigation system, and then the A-Spec which as already mentioned by DynamicJ32 has the lip kit and it also has the 3.5L engine as well as the option to get it in a pretty neat limited edition blue only registered for the A-Spec (Which I'm not 100% on this but from what I found, the Acura TL from 2004 to 2006 was called the Type-S, and in 2007 to 2008 it was the Type-S ASPEC but like I said I'm not 100% sure if that's correct or not)

In 2005 they discontinued the base model which had amber side markers and no hands free built in so from 2005 and up there are only three models. Dynamic(The new base model), Navi (Nagivation system), and Type-S (ASPEC).

Then from 2007 to 2008 they discontinued the Dynamic and there were only two models, the Navi, or ASPEC.

Hope this helps.

^Some of that information is incorrect.

- ALL 2004-2008 TLs have smoked front side markers.
- The 3.5L engine was specific to the 07-08 TL type-S.
- Never did they call any 04-06 models the Type-S.

04-06 model with the 6MT was called "Sport" in the US. Not sure about Canada.

Thanks guys. I like the wheels too. WOuld have been great if they were black as I would have liked to black out the car completely.

I think mine is the SPort/summertire model with the 6MT.

I would like to get some maintenance stuff done and out of the way.

Starting a new thread for it.

After 1/2 tank of gas my avg mpg is 20!
60% city 40% highway. I thought the TL would have better gas mileage than my Lexus haha (maybe heavy foot?)

About what I am getting too. But I have been wringing its neck when I can and shift up past 4.5k in 1st, 2nd and 3rd regularly.

I don't drive like I stole it..but i sure do drive like an Indian!

Gonna swap in new spark plugs however. Doesn't start up as quickly as I would like. Got NGK iridiums on the way. Could affect the mileage as well.
