POLL: 6spd or Auto

Dealer told me that they don't sell too many 6 spds. Just curious as to how the Acurazine community falls out.

My SEARCH turned up two other instances of this same poll...bumping one of them wasn't good enough, huh?

This forum is NOT a very good indication of who is buying TL's. Most buyers are much older than people on this forum and want AUTO. I THOUGHT I wanted a 6SP for my everyday driver when I was 25 years old too. Now that I'm in my 40's and you could not pay me to drive a 6SP everyday. No F...ing way. Based on how many 6SP TL's I see in dealerships, I have to believe I'm not alone.

If I want to throw gears, I'll drive my old Vette. The TL's is a great everyday car with lots of toys. I love my AUTO TL.

Most of the 3G TLs I've seen at work are auto. I'm the only one with a 6spd w/A-Spec body kit (is being installed tomorrow).

Different strokes for different folks. I'm in my 50's and bought my 2006 TL 6MT in October. I originally test drove a 5AT and didn't really think about the 6MT. I had driven sports cars in my 20's and 30's that were all manuals, but it had bee about 15 years since I had driven/owned a manual.

This forum convinced me to look at the 6MT and after I took a test drive, I was hooked. Fun factor is what this car is all about. The 6MT adds greatly to that.

It's really a personal decision. If you are a car enthusiast and you enjoy driving the car instead of having the car drive you (and you enjoy shifting), then look at the 6MT. If you want a great car with ease of use and comfort and don't live a heavily urban area (and you don't enjoy shifting), get the 5AT.

BTW, if you use a cell phone a lot, then you need to get a Bluetooth phone. The HFL is great and almost a requirement if you have the 6MT.

I am almost 50 and like the 6MT.
The wife is over 50 and would not get anything else.
The auto trans TL was nothing special to us, rather get something else if we
were stuck with an automatic.

Except on the acurazine, I think the manual is quite rare, out of the 100? cars we see on the road, at malls, etc, 3 were manual trans cars.
We look for the brembo's...

Thanks for your thoughts. BTW - I'm not 25 and I have a couple of friends that have 6 or 5 spds that are not 25 either. I actually have both a manual car and a automatic car (the wife's). I see the benefits of automatics but I just get bored driving them. I feel more engaged when I'm driving manuals.

In the end I just wanted to see what the TL drivers in this forum were driving. The rep told me that they only sell about 5% of the TL's in 6spds and most of them without NAVI. I think that this forum has a higher amount of 6 spd drivers and people with NAVI. Maybe another poll..who has NAVI and who doesn't have NAVI.

In my area, the higher end mid-size performance sedans are a VERY popular commodity, and manuals are generally prized. So you tend to see quite a few of them. We I bought my '04 TL, the dealer was averaging 25-27% manual TLs in his inventory. The day I bought mine, they had three Anthracite/Ebony/6MT/Nav TLs on the lot.. I got one of them; the one that had been pulled off of the trailer 2 days before I got it.

Everyone one that says there's a disproportionate share of MT owners here versus the general population is right. In person, I think I've seen one MT.

I guess we are just a bunch of gearheads.

I have only seen 2 other 6MTs in CT. One right next to me at every day work and one other one the road (once).

Hey ! I resemble that remark and I can't can't imagine an AT unless my left knee/leg fails me. I also have a wonderful spouse that can't drive an MT yet never suggested I get an AT.

I hear ya, I am 36 and love my 6MT. I had originally ordered the AT, but when I found out that they drove it over 240 miles in a dealer trade and it was dirty, I walked away - it was a sign from the Gods, because a week later I was in a 6MT and loved it!!!

When I get the loaner AT TL, I immediately miss my 6MT - it is the FUN FACTOR!!!

And yes, a bluetooth phone is a must for the 6MT.

I've never owned an automatic. I love driving manual. I told myself that as long as I have a healthy left foot, I'm driving a manual car. I'd rather have total controll of the TL but it seems the drive by wire throttle is not as precise as I'd like it to be-it delays sometimes. Oh well, at least I can determine what gear I'd like to be in. When I bought my car, there were only two manuals sitting on the lot, one after I left. For sure the auto sells more. To each their own.

Resale is higher on the automatic and they're easier to sell since they're less likely to have been romped.

ull find that there are a lot of the 6-speed owners on the forums....because mostly car enthusiasts will drive a manual tranny car....unfortunately....i couldn't wait the 5-6 months for the car....so i jumped the gun and got my perfect color combo

I guess it really also depends on what kind of drive you have everyday. I've had a few jobs close to home and driving a manual would be just fine. Don't get me wrong, I love driving manual cars. I've had many. You feel more part of the car. I understand that and agree. I just spend 3 hours on the road each day driving 100 miles. It works out to around 2 hours of stop and go each day. I'll bet a few people on this forum would hate the manual after a few months of that. I find other things to do in the car and I don't have to push in that stupid clutch every 15 seconds for 2 hours a day. Would a clutch even last very long with 10 hours of stop and go driving each week?

GET THE NAVI !! It's part of the appeal of the car if you ask me. You will not regret it.

Absolutely, as long as the driver knows how to proper knows how to operate a manual transmission.. and frankly, most don't.

Bought my first car when I was 18. Like all of the rest of my "cars", it was a new one. And with the exception of one of them, it was a manual. The one automatic I bought was a 1983 Toyota Cressida.. I thought I was going to be towing a boat with this car, but wound towing with my wife's car afterall.

Every other car I've owned has been a new one and has had a manual transmission. Even my bought-used 2001 Ford Ranger pickup (only had 1960 miles on it when I got it) has a manual transmission, though for such a utility vehicle, I could go with an automatic.

My personal driving machine MUST be a manual. I'd go nuts if it were not.

This would completely depend upon the market in which you are selling or trading your car. I would bet that in my area, a manual TL is going to have no trouble in a private sale because of the class of car it is. The move well here. A good benchmark to check is the 3-series BMWs and the G35s. Since the TL sits in the same class as do these cars, you can get a feel for tranny types.

I bought an auto only because I will be moving to DC later this year and I didn't want to deal with the manual in heavy traffic. I did test drive one before the purchase but didn't care for the touchy clutch. It was hard to pass on the Brembos too.

Dealer told me the same thing.....they only had one on lot and it had been there a LONG time. Could tell from the sticker as well as I had been tracking their lot for many months.

If you're moving to DC, you might want to consider buying a junker, unless you have a protected place to leave it when not in use. On the other hand, if you are moving to the DC AREA (as in Virginia or Maryland), it largely depends upon which area. In Maryland, you might want to avoid Prince Georges County.. lots of crime. In Virginia, consider western Fairfax, Loudoun County, or Prince William County.

But living in DC.. you're a brave man.

For those of you on this thread who might think that age has anything to do with transmission choice, I submit you are completely wrong with this assessment. While I will certainly admit that there are older people who much prefer an automatic transmission over a manual, unless they are arthritic or have some other physical problems, their choice is mostly one of preference.. no different than someone in their twenties or thirties.

Since I tend to be a bit sensitive about my age, suffice it to say that I would imagine I'm ollder than most of you on this thread. But that don't mean squat in my opinion. I still like the same things I did when I was in my twenties (Rock 'n Roll, guns, and cars), still tend to act pretty much the same, still have all of my hair and no real wrinkles and no gut,and still have this mental image of my age at 24. Years are only time and as long as all the parts work (which mine do), time is largely a physical thing.

As long as I can drive and as long as I am physically able, I will chose a manual transmission over an automatic for my personal driving machine. It's been this way since I was 18 and it will remain this way into my seventies and up (not there, yet).

My black on black 05 TL 6 speed was hard to get. I had to special order it and it took 3 months. If i have the option i will choose manual all the way. i just love the control of my car and the fun that a 6 speed puts into a car. I think since manual Tls are harder to find that the resale value of manuals might be better then auto's, but i dont plan on selling mine anytime soon.

I drive 62 miles to work each way, sometimes a 2+ hour commute (about an hour stop and go each way). I agree it's a pain in the ass in stop an go, but the fun factor it brings while I'm not sitting in traffic is MORE than worth it!!

^^ this is exactly wut i'm doin.. haha.. but i do prefer a 6spd.. more funner for us younger people... but i think that the manual is more worth it because of the LSD, Brembo, and close gear ratios... i like speed and this is after all a sports sedan... but since i havve a WDP auto w/ navi.. i would wanna jus slap sum ronjon's on and done...

I was lucky. My 06 black on black 6MT was all ready and sitting in the Dealership yard. On the 2nd day I decided to buy TL, the dealer had it all ready for me. So, yea, it took me 2 days to get my NBP/Eboy TL.
