One thing holding me back that maybe shouldn't?

Hey all I have never visited this site before but have heard a lot of good things so I figured I'd swing in and ask a question. So a few months ago I started looking for a new car and absolutely fell in love with the 07-08 TL. I'm deadset on this car the only problem I have is my price range. I'm looking at spending at most 17k, there aren't a whole lot of TLs in my area at that price. The ones that are in my price range are a little high in mileage(at least I think).

I want to stay under 70k, I have found numerous cars near 100k. A friend of mine has been driving an Acura for some time now and bought his RSX with 145k on it and keeps insisting that mileage doesnt really matter with Honda/Acura. Should I been looking this far into the mileage? Or would I be ok with a car that has higher mileage?

Also are there any notorious problems with the TLs?

Thanks in advance

A manual will eliminate the biggest possible issue. Other than that high mileage should not deter you as long as you inspect it like any other high mileage car purchase

I wouldent let slightly higher mileage scare you off. If you are looking into a 6MT 07/08 you will be limited to a Type S which will be more expencieve and harder to find. The manual trans wasent available on the 07/08 base, but the auto trans in the 07/08s are greatly improved over the 04/06 auto and have shown to be nearly trouble free with proper maintenince. Also the timing belt service is due around 105k miles.

I got my 2008 TL with 71K miles year ago for $17K. Could be because carfax listed 3 prior owners when in fact there was only one.

Edit: I am a minority here but I will never buy a manual again, when I came to Los Angeles 20 years ago I was laughing at people that drive AT well ever since I am limping on my left leg and I drink half a bottle of wine every night just to numb the pain in my knee.

welcome to the site, I would like to answer some question you had. TL is a pretty solid car but like any other used car on the road aging car need maint and replace part that wear and tear over years of use. The most common problem with a used TL could be.

1. Rattling (you can track them down and eliminate one by one)

2. interior light love goes out one after another like navi button, heated seat logo, VSA, trunk release button. If your car has navi and the bulbs goes out then it could be expensive to replace them something like $375 part and labor (acura dealer price) to replace a $5 bulbs. however there is a TBS or DIY for that in the garage section.

3. Tighten gas cap warning light, easy to replace and cost $94 and 10 mins of your time.

4. Drive Axle goes bad and motor mount busted but this isn't a very common issue.

4. With the amount of budget you listed, I would say you can find a clean 07-08 TL with 60k-80k miles with ease depend on Navi or not.

like everyone else said 07-08 feature a modified beef up version from Acura RL and I never heard anyone has issue with them. beside they offer more options that wasn't available on the 04-06 TL.

Thank you all for your replies thus far. I should have clarified in the original post but I am only looking for an AT base model with navi, unless I find a Type S cheap enough

It may have been a stupid question here as I have only owned two cars in my lifetime, both being american made and racking up 200k miles, but I have had a few friends get that look like "you're going to buy a used car with 9x,xxx miles on it?!"

Also I came across an 07 Type S with 102k for 16,500. To me that seems like a steal, yet I get the mileage skivies

I would buy Acura that pass 100k miles just make sure they have the 105k services done. There is couple base with navi sold near me for $16-$17k with 40k-60k miles.

I bought mine, an '07 with 56k for 16k. Its automatic though. I got tired of driving stick after 6 years and when I go to Houston, traffic sucks and its very inconvenient.

Was something wrong with your clutch there, chief?

Edit: Contributing... Bought my '08 TL-S 2 years ago with 35k miles for $26000. Current value is approx $19-20k @ 75k miles. +1 to pohljm's post about inspecting it like anything else. If possible, as for maintenance records.

Just picked from down south, my one owner 07' type S with 71K miles and 14mo's left of the 100K/7yr CPO warranty for $16K. There are some good deals out there, just have to work to find them & be able to negotiate & travel

300-500 pushes on a clutch an hour in LA traffic

Haha I was just bustin' your chops. I'm joking of course. I drive through Chicago rush hour sometimes and I know how much of a pain in the ass it is. I feel like I'm mistreating my car when I constantly use the clutch. Although it's probably not as bad here as it is in LA because the clutch usage is DEFINITELY much less than 5-8 pushes per minute. That's once every 7.2 - 12 seconds! I usually just idle in 1st or 2nd with a nice two car distance from the car in front, saves a bunch of clutch. Okay enough off-topic rant. Sorry OP!

OP: If you're looking around the 100k mileage, make sure to inquire about the 105k service (timing belt, plugs, water pump, coolant flush). This isn't cheap and should factor into your negotiations.
