Which oil to use in the TL?

I'm looking to buy a new TL. What's the factory recommended engine oil to use?

Acura recommends 5w-20.

Acura wants 5W20. I use factory oil until 1k-2k then let dealer do their free oil change then around 3k-4k I switch to Mobil One 5W20 and I follow the car's maintenance minder until it is about 30% then I change it, that generally for me runs around 5k-6k miles.

thanks guys

I'm sure it's on the cap, but I haven't picked the car up yet and I wanted to check if its the same as my current car since I'm about to buy a few cases.

Btw, just closed the deal and picking it up tomorrow, what a great X-Mas gift! Woo hoo!

Where are you finding XOM 7500 5w-20??? I was at Wally's and Kragen's yesterday...no luck. In fact, I didn't see ANY 5w-20 at Kragen's or Wally's that was priced under $2.50/qt....

I think I'll just pull the plug on 5w-20 and dump in Supertech 10w-30 in all the 5w-20 spec'ed vehicles I service, from now on, while enjoying the higher HT/HS, film strength, and $1.10/qt price.

To answer the original question...use any API SM 5w-20 will a good filter and change it per the MID, Havoline seems to be the favorite around here.

I use Havoline 5w-20 w/ a Mobil 1 filter. I just got done changing the oil and rotating the tires at 8k miles and it could not have been easier. I was going to let Acura do the maintenance. But I have been getting alot of very good info from this forum and have been doing the maintenance and could not be happier. I am so glad I found this forum. A special thank you to all the guys and gals that make this forum so special.

I got it at Walmart.....1 quart at a time....they had no full cases of it in stock...so I just bought 5 qts. And your right....I had to look high and low at several places to even find a 5w20 that wasnt some cheezy Protech brand or something like that. At Walmart....they had ONE row of these bottles....as opposed to the HUGE sections of 10w30, ect. consisting of 5-10 rows. And you are right, it was about 2.50 a quart!

$2.50/qt for XOM 7500 isn't bad at all...but $2.50/qt for lousy Valvoline 5w-20 is pretty $$$.

I was at Kragen's yesterday, looking for some grease. Found a tub of Valvoline Multi-Purpose, $3.80 for a one pound tub...it was there that I noticed that the only 5w-20s they carried were the Quaker State, Pennzoil, and Valvoline...all of these were the conventional version, and they were priced at $2.49/qt....When I was at Walmart, where I found some cheaper grease ($2.40/lb for the Supertech stuff), I didn't recall seeing any 5w-20 (there might've been some, but if there was, it wasn't large enough to catch my attention )....boy if I was really looking for some oil, that $5.48 per 5-qt jug of Supertech 10w-30 would've had me tempted.

(Sorry for the OT)

My favorite is the Motorcraft 5W-20 syn blend for less than $2/quart at Walmart.

Lots of good UOAs over at BITOG on this stuff.

Synthetic blends are not worth using no matter how cheap. Full synthetics are the way to go, they cost a little more but provide far better wear protection and performance. I just bought a couple of cases of Mobil 1 5w-20 at autobarn.com.

What kind of a statement is this?

I also use the Motorcraft 5W20 blend ($1.92 at Wal-Mart). I have used it for a full MID cycle and had an oil analysis done. Wear metals were still declining nicely from break-in and the oil still had TBN to control acid. The lab confirmed the oil was holding up well and would be okay to extend my oil change interval.

So, given that during the warranty period you MUST change the oil by the MID no matter what oil you use, why should I spend more money to put in full synthetic? Sure it's probably better, but sometimes good enough is good enough.

I'll keep my car for 12 years and I put 10,000 miles a year on it. I'm sure I'll have no oil-related engine problems with Motorcraft 5W20 changed per the MID.

I think you need to do some more research on the new generation of syn-blends - they are awesome!

I use the Mobile One Full Synthetic ... only $25 at Wal-Mart for 5Quarts + Oil Filter ... total cost for oil change ... $30 ... I use a 5w-30 oil ... but that has not given me any problems with any car I have ...

I do feel a significant power difference using full synthetic..maybe even more of a difference than bolt-ons (exhaust, intake). I'm thinking it might be worth an extra few bucks every few months...

question: is it bad to alternate synth blend with full synth every other oil change?

I hate to say but a "significant power difference" should not be felt between synthetic and dyno oils.... (of same viscosity) JMHO :-)

Now, if your going from a 20w-50 dyno to a 5w-20 synthetic then maybe..

As for switching every other month etc., - Not a problem, but I would stick with the same oil manufacturer to facilitate matching the oil package/additives.

Cheers

Just so happens that Honda has a contract with ExxonMobil to provide the oil under the Honda OEM brand. Same applies to GM and Toyota; both GM Goodwrench and Toyota branded oils are bottled by ExxonMobil.

BTW, what I find interesting is how the supplier for factory fill changes constantly for GM...so you never know whats being installed at the factory.

No kidding? No wonder GM is in so much trouble....consistency is always nice. I wonder if Acura or Honda has changed in the past....

Well, does it matter? As long as it meets API and ILSAC specs, brand really isn't that important, theoretically, which is why it makes sense to go with the lowest bidder.

I guess I would find it hard to argue this point in a board meeting....no doubt! Especially with a car company that is in financial probs and needing all they can get to attempt to create a margin.

Most Amsoil and all M1 is PAO based. Amsoil XL is a GrpIII petroleum that has been refined extensively, well blended, and provides equal performance to a PAO.

I've used 5w-30 on my 2G TL since the first oil change and I have no problems with it. I'm going to do the same on my 3G.

Because the list is outdated; 0w-20 M1 is no longer made but may be brought back at some point in the future.
