Oil life question.

Since i got my 07 TL about two weeks ago, the oil life has been at a constant 70%. I got it certified from Acura dealer wit 19K miles on it. We might have put on about 300 miles. In what increments does the indicator move in?? thx

I average about 6.25K miles between oil changes. If you do the math, you can figure it out for yourself. It'll go in 10's until you hit 20. It'll go to 15, then 10, then 5.

welcome!
Please have a good read of the car owner manual- it contains not only this info- but critical info on traction control- braking, ac-heat control- seat heater operation and more
If you didnt get one- there is a free download available

My 2006 goes about 7000 miles between oil changes. It depends on a lot of things but generally you'll get more miles if you do a lot of highway versus city driving.

I noticed that it takes anywhere between 400 to 700 miles for indicator to change....

Just keep in mind, it's a calculation based on many factors. It doesn't actually monitor the oil itself. When doing a lot of freeway driving, mine wanted to take me all the way out to 10K miles. I'm a little uncomfortable following the MID on dino oil. I'm not a 3,000 OCI guy but I'm also not going 10K on dino either.

90% of my driving is freeway; my MID tells me to change the oil every 3 months or so.

Not to hijack the OPs thread but... seriously every 3-4 months?! ;(

I used to change it every 4500miles on ordinary oil, I put synthetic oil and it seems like it doesn't hold up as well as convention oil. It's still got some gold hue to it, but I'm sure it'll be really dark by 4500miles, so I spent the extra few bucks for nothing.

The color of the oil is not the indicator you should use for it's remaining usefulness. All oils will discolor in near the same amount of time. Do a search on "oil analysis". Time to begin "oil" 101 class....

I tend to change my oil at the 30-40% / MID. It's always right at the 5000-5500 mile range at that point.

Cheers

likewise.

20% is the lowest Id go, then change. that puts mine right about 5-5500 miles. I use M1 synthetic.

I'd say I put on about 2,000 miles a month; maybe not that high but I just calculated 100 miles a day 20 days a month.. [in reality probably about 70 miles a day, but add in lunch trips, weekend driving, etc. it's probably close]

Sorry OP not trying to hijack thread ..but

I changed my oil about 2-3 weeks ago to Mobil 1 synthetic, but I didn't know how to reset the MID.
Now it says I gotta do a service A.
My MID shows my oil life at 15%

Can someone please tell me how to reset the MID?

Sometimes a good synthetic will clean better and the oil will go darker quicker because it's cleaning. On the second change, it probably won't get dark as quick.

Hold down the reset button until it goes back to 100%.

In this thread, The OP questioned what incriments the MID drops in. The question has been answred. This thread is likley to turn into another one of the many threads that we have about which oil is the best and how often do we change. I like to change mine as soon as the MID starts bugging me that I only have 30% to go. I hate having people get in my car with me and having to explaing the service do soon message. I also hate having to push the buttons on the MID screen in addition to the Nag screen on the NAV.

a little off topic, but has anyone had the dealer write on that "next service due" sticker a date that was 7 months away and 7500 miles later? i thought that was odd

Well, I bet it really torques ya to have to turn the keys to start the car then, or how about roll down the winds, set the cruise, open the trunk, set the radio, lights, horn??? Crap, you must just hate the entire car operating experience..

Don't be such a "hater"... :-)

Because of you this thread will now turn into another "things I hate about my TL thread..."

OK, just kidding

Yet....
- My MID has never displayed "SERVICE DUE SOON" (you as the human interface can control that).
- Navi nag screen is there for your and others safety. If you don't like it, search back 4 years and you can find how to defeat it....

Now see what you have done - sorry for the temporary hijack OP...

:-)

If you're asking whether the MID's indicator can be expected to drop on a predictable schedule based on your mileage, then the answer is "no." Highway driving will cause the indicator to drop at a slower rate than city driving will. I just came back from a vacation in Nova Scotia on which I drove 2,571.5 miles. The MID was at 80% when I left but flipped to 70% before I had reached Delaware. It was at 30% when I got home (and still is). Over 1,400 miles of the trip were on Interstates or similar types of highways in the US and in Nova Scotia, and another couple of hundred miles were on "Super-2" type roads (Nova Scotia has some two-lane highways that have interchanges). When I do majority city driving, as I normally do, I see the MID drop a lot more quickly.

Bottom line is that (1) the MID will ding at you with an orange-colored message when it estimates your oil life at 15% remaining and (2) based on the information in your post you have no reason to be concerned that it hasn't changed yet.

Most all manufacturers agree that if you don't hit your mileage goal within a year, do a yearly oil change.

That's the rule I follow on my RX-7 (and as you may know, with the rotary engine keeping up with the oil is even more important than with other cars) and it's run fine. I typically put perhaps a thousand miles on it in a year, but I change the oil and filter every March anyway. (Why March? Because the state inspection is due that month so I just do it all at the same time to minimize the nuisance.)

The owner's manual for the 2004 TL specifically states that if the service reminder does not come on within 12 months after the MID is reset, then you should have the oil changed. I assume it's the same for the other years.
