You can wait till 10%. At 15%, the MID will display "Service Due Soon". At 5%, "Service Due Now". As long as the MID doesn't indicate "Service Past Due", you'll be fine.

If it isn't the first or second oil change, I'd wait until 15%.

My first service (A1) was at 4950 and my B1 at about 10k.

What if it is the first change? change sooner, or wait until it says service due now?

IMO, the sooner, the better for factory fill. I changed at 3200 but wish I had done so at about 1500. Honda/Acura wants you to leave the break-in oil there until the MID says to change because it is "special" oil.

Lab analysis shows that the only difference is a healthy dose of molybdenum in the factory fill.

It was important to me to get the factory fill out soon because of manufacturing debris that is in all new engines- plus the wear metals inherent in break-in.

So, checking with www.bobistheoilguy.com and their resident tribologists, and after consulting with our resident oil guys, Road Rage and Michael Wan, I have discovered that Havoline 5W-20 is nearly identical to the Acura break-in factory fill. So, you can have your cake and eat it too. Change to Havoline 5W-20 after about 1,000 miles. Then reset your MID Oil Life indicator and go with that (if you choose.) The next change, you can stick with Havoline or go with Mobil 1 or any other good quality synthetic or dino juice.

Don't forget the filter. Mobil 1 M104 or M110 (oversize) is best with Purolator Pure One a close second. Delco ACs are decent as well as several others. I recommend against the Fram unless you go with their premium filters which are still not as good as those mentioned.

Honda OEM filters are made by either Fram or Filter Tech. There are two different part numbers. Stick with Mobil 1 which are a little more money at auto parts stores- about $10. Cheap insurance.

Stupid question...

Does anyone know if the electronics in the car keep track of ALL the times the MID is reset?

I ask because I'm wondering if Acura can see the intervals and miles for each reset to determine an oil change history.

Regards,

Regards,
With the current state of electronics, I am sure the raw data is stored. Consider the price of a 512Mb flash drive. That's a ton of memory. My first computer only had a 20 Mb HDD and I thought that was amazing.

Whether or not the data is easily retrieved or routinely reported is another issue. Probably not unless they had a large warranty claim and wanted to see if it had been misused. However, the "evidence" would be indirect at best since just resetting the MID doesn't mean you actually changed the oil/filter. OTOH, you could have changed them and NOT reset the MID.

The real proof would be dealer records of service, receipts (for DIY'ers), and backed up by the service records we can record on the www.acura.com website under "My Vehicle". I use that religiously for ANY service I do on my car- including detailing, adding mats, ...whatever. You can print it out from time to time and put a copy in your Acura file. Most computers will print the date of printing on the bottom (if not, see "page setup" in the FILE pulldown menu up there^.

Big Brother can be watching you. I just don't know if he routinely does.

Excellent point. I thought of that as I was typing my question.

I do as much of my own maintenance and repairs as possible on all of my vehicles. I don't keep receipts for filters, oil and other maintenance parts as it doesn't guarantee that I did the maintenance (much like resetting the MID doesn't necessarily mean one did an oil change). I simply keep a small pad in my gloveboxes listing date, mileage, and maintenance performed.

So far, I've been lucky enough not to have to prove anything to anyone as I haven't had warranty problems with any of the members of my fleet.

Regards,

So do you guys think the MID is accurate? Or would it be better to just change it every 5K with Mobil1 Synthetic?

I send a sample of my used oil to a lab for analysis. They tell me if I can go longer between changes.

I am also a low-mileage driver. I don't put 5,000 miles on in a year. So, I will change my Mobil 1 every Spring because time also takes a toll on the lube.

If I were driving more, I would probably change the oil and filter when the MID said to- unless my analysis said I was going too long. I don't think it will.

Acura has to guarantee the engine for 4 years. I think they would be careful about maintenance issues.

I have no doubt you could change it every 20K and that the engine would last to 100K miles. I want mine to last past 200K though. I keep my cars until they are used up completely. But I don't want to be changing the oil too much either.

Not every 20K

Every 10K maybe.
