Not Another Oil Thread.......
I asked this question in another thread but it didn't get much response because it was in the middle of a "What Type of Oil Do You Use" discussion and we all know how they get but here is my question.........Am I the only one that thinks the 5 quart container of Mobil 1, Castroil, Penzoil, (or whatever you use) are more inconvenient than the gallon container? All my vehicles only take 4 quarts and I have 2 containers with an extra quart of oil left in them. Not to mention that I almost always over fill the cars with 1/4 quart when trying to measure using the tick marks on the sides of the container. None of my cars burn oil so I don't use that extra quart until the next oil change. Even if my cars did use oil, it uses less space to keep a 1 quart container in trunk. I know it is cheaper to buy it by the container but I really would prefer to get it by the quart.

the acura will use that 5 qt with it just over the full mark- no sweat
As for your problem- shop at parts stores -they sell gallons for your other cars.

use the extra qts to change the lawn mower oil before winter and in springtime.
Donate them to a neighbor kid on a budget...

i would never use 5qts when the book calls for 4.5qts....as for the extra 1/2qt, i usually use that in my wifes car, lawn mower, or the next time i change the oil, i use what i had left, then i use the new bottle...then i pour the old stuff from the last oil change into the empty container and haul it off to autozone to dump...

I dont know about gen3 but my gen2 calls for 4.7 and having measured inside the oil pan, its no problem. Many of us do it
All cars should use a small amount of oil between changes.

I have trouble finding oil in 5 quarts at the parts store! that would be too convenient!
Must admit to using the auto repair entrance to wally's, to buy seafoam for less than other stores in their auto section, WHEN I an getting gallon size of special oil for my bike.
May as well grab metal polish and seafoam while right there~
Using the side door avoids the rest of the place!!

for those having trouble pouring without mass spillage,
use an old qt container- turn it upside down and cut off the bottem- the neck fits the filler hole perfect!
Old gallon or 5 qt containers are great to take old oil in for recycle- auto parts store will accept it no charge -by law

That is exactly what I was thinking. If I have to get brake pads, a thermostat, some spark plugs or something car specific, I go to an auto parts store. What is wrong with me picking up oil at Wal-Mart? Next you will be telling me that I should not be getting my car wash stuff from there either. Wait, I know I should get it from one of the vendors on here but.......ok, that was not a good example.

I strongly prefer the 5-Quart jugs. The old oil goes into the just use 5-quart jug. No worries about having a place to put the used oil while it accumulates prior to drop off.
If there is a little good/new oil remaining (maybe 1/2 quart or less) I really don't care.
At AutoZone a little while back, I thought I was buying a 5-quart jug. But it was 4 quarts. Now not only was I short for the oil change, the stupid smaller jug wouldn't hold the all the oil I had just drained.![Annoyed](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/annoyed.gif)
FWIW - 4.5 qts puts me right between the min/max line.
5-Qt Jug FTW

Did mine this morning along with a tire rotation.
The Mobile-1 5 qt jug took me just a shade (about the width of a line) over full with a M1-104 filter (Honda S-2000) which is slightly larger then the standard TL filter.

I am talking gen2 takes 4.7 with a new filter, All the TLs should be close to that
If not- check pan for dent
Why buy a funnel when I have a free used qt container to cut open and use?
I have funnels, just trying to give someone else a freebie idea.

Personally....I save the extra quart (when I used Mobil 1....I use Royal Purple currently and buy by the quart...but still buy an extra) and use it at the next oil change to flush out any remaining residue and old oil left in bottom of pan after the oil drains out completely. I pop the plug...go inside for a while...and when its done...dump the extra quart in and let it drain out until it comes out clear. Then replug the car and refill the oil as usual. Yes...I know...prob uneeded and an expensive flush...but personally...I think its worth it in the long run.
No big deal....but we started doing that many years ago to our own cars when I worked at an oil change place many moons ago. Matter of fact...it was one of the very first quick lube places back in the 80's...which I will tell you from experience...to stay away from unless you know somebody. In some of those shops....you are lucky if you have somebody working on your car thats worked there for two days.
