no more GM Syncromesh friction modifier?

so i was reading that GM synchromesh friction modifier was being phased out. My clutch is getting redone and i'm doing the slave cylinder mod at the same time and i wanted to put the sychromesh friction fluid in while i'm doing all this.

Then i saw on another forum that u can't get it any more.
http://www..com/showthread.php?t=2184992

so now i'm opeing an old topic... what MT fluid should i use or can someone get me some of the right synchromesh fluid.

No worries, get Amsoil Manual Synchromesh, it's better than GM. Gm=still had third gear notchiness, Amsoil=third gear notchiness gone. I tested both, Amsoil wins.

The '04 manual takes 2.3 U.S. quarts (2 quarts, 10 ounces rounded) for a drain and fill.

Found some threads on other Honda boards stating that the fluid is not being phased out. I am checking with some friends who work for GM dealers to see if they know anything.

I have the updated Honda MTF and my shifts are better than they were, but my 2nd and 6th still give me some issues from time to time.

I bought mine here and it looks like they're still carrying it.

http://paceperformance.com/index.asp...D&ProdID=41510

Have you tried your local GM dealer?

I bought 3 quarts with some leftover. Not sure if it was 2.2 or 2.3 but it really doesn't matter.

jchcmax, are you sure you used the FM variety? GM produces a non-FM syncromesh version. If you read past threads, I don't think there was anyone who didn't see immediate fix using GMSMFM.

I had the 3rd gear issue. Dealer didn't find it the first time I brought it in, so I installed the updated Honda MTF to give it a try (it had just come out). The transmission shifted like normal for exactly 1000 miles, then immediately started acting funny again. I waited till the next winter when the problem would be at it's worst and took it too the dealer. They found the problem right away and replaced the 3rd gear synchro..

Why just not go to your dealer and get the 3rd gear fixed under warranty?

When I had mine car taken care of, the service manager assigned my case to a tech that lives 20-30+ miles away from the dealership. I ok'ed to have the tech to drive the car to between home and work for a day or two till the shifting problems could be reproduced. Since the fix (several months ago) I did not have a single shifting issue and I am very happy with the resolution.

If you know that your dealer is competent, then by all means have them do it. I'm not saying mine isn't, but I would rather try replacing the fluid before tearing it all apart.

The fluid swap is just a band-aid & does not fix the root cause of the problem, bad original parts. Also as these parts are busy destroying themselves they are creating trash that can destroy other parts.

If the syncro's are bad they need to be replaced, best done before the warranty runs out.

Yeah, it was friction modifed;

I already use Amsoil oil so I decided to give their Synchromesh a try and it works brilliantly, never looked back.

Same here, but for 50,000 miles. Absolutely zero shavings when I drained the first batch of GM fluid after 30K miles.

Enjoy, but don't whine when it craps out after the warranty runs out & you have to buy a new one.

The car shifted much better after it was rebuilt then it ever did with the GMFM gear oil & has never popped out of 3rd since it was done.

The thing for others to think about is Honda has admitted it was built with bad parts when they issued the TSB & started doing $2000+ rebuilds of the 6MT transmission for free.

well I know that at least in canada all the GM MT fluids are bought out by a company called AC Delco. They are the ones who sell the old GM Syncromesh FrictionModified tran. fluid under the new name. I will be picking up some this week hopefully

Meh, I'll likely be rebuilding for reasons other than this. And it won't be whining, it'll be blowoff

If it's a TSB, it usually isn't a warranty claim is it? And if it is, it's up to the dealer and their willingness to admit it's a problem.

I have not had a less-than-100%-perfect 3rd (or any other) gear engagement since my Acura dealer replaced the OEM fluid with GMS-FM in 2006. And I'm 8,000 miles out of warranty, so no looking back now. I suspect your original problem may have been more severe(?) ... anyhow, I guess we're both happy for now, and I hope your dealer did a good rebuild.

>>PS: Anyone out there know if Pohanka Chevy in Chantilly still has the stuff??

They did when I did my last drain and fill, but that was last year(??). Give them a call and let us know.

Not with out looking for the paper work. That being said there were 3 or 4 pages of parts listed.

SouthernBoy all all,
First of all, Pohanka does have the stuff, but the Parts dept quoted me $15 each ... which got me wondering whether this product is available online. Google the Part Number (12377916), and check out your 1st result -- Pace Performance. Yesterday I ordered 6 bottles at $8.67 each + $10 UPS shipping, for a total of $62.02 (no tax). So call it 6 bottles for the price of 4. My order just shipped and I have the UPS tracking number, so I'm good for another 100,000 miles or so.

I had the 3rd gear TSB done about 10,000 miles ago. I haven't had a 3rd gear engagement problem since.

for Canadians, Google ACDelco, they bought out GM parts in Canada (or so I think) and find a distributor near you. I found some at a Chevi dealership after looking and calling every parts store in the city. probably gonna change it this weekend. I am hoping for the best since i haven't done this before

Cool Not new news!!!

I have posted this before....
My AMSOIL guy was at the AMSOIL headquarters in Wisconsin. He saw the GM logo-ed truck. Loading many barrels of their (AMSOIL) mtf. Yes, GM is buying AMSOIL and relabeling it! This is nothing new. After all why reinvent the wheel? Or in this case the lube?

I trust my AMSOIL guy. You should buy a quart of each. Then put them each in a clear jar. It looks the same. But now smell it..... It smells the same too. Why? Cuz it is the same stuff..... So there you have it. Try this yourself.....OK, let the flames begin....

Chevy dealer right next to my work had 3 quarts in stock. I picked up 2 on discount through my work. Put it in my Honda Element last Friday to help with it's poorly rebuilt 3rd gear. Shift'n smooth ever since. If it keeps up through the winter I will one happy camper...

What they didn't tell you was that they went out and got GM Synchromesh for your car!

Thanks for the website! I had the issue when I first bought the car and used GM Synchromesh and 65k+ miles later, not a SINGLE issue. But it's defniitely time to change out the fluid!
