M5 smoked me...
Was driving behind an m5---we raced off the line a little bit...he pulled ahead...my tl couldnt keep up. What are the specs on an M5? car seemed realy fast. I could have shifted better but still...

In short:
394 horsepower and 368 lb/ft of torque.
The long version:
The TL is not in its class. You had no chance. As a side note, look out for the new BMW M5 to come out soon, with a V10 engine, rumored to be pushing 500 horses.
For more info on the old body style M5 (not sold anymore) here is a review of a 2000 M5 from Edmunds:

Unless you have a twin turbo NSX or some souped up 700 hp Civic, you will not find a Honda/Acura that is capable of taking out an M5.
An M5 is something to be respected and admired. Just stay away from their engine bays, those engines tend to blow up

I was entertained by this post. There is an old proverb of war, "If you want to fight, know your enemy else you do not have a chance to win". You didn't, did you? Forget M5, had it been M3 you still did'nt have any chance. Only two cars I like made by BMW. If I ever buy one it will be either of this. New M5 with 90 degree V10. Wow!!

Yes, you're correct. It's the E46 M3 that has motor issues. The M5 ROCKS.
BTW, a well driven NSX can hold its own with the M5.

Hell, buy a Factory Five 1966 427 A/C Cobra replica with a small block Ford 302 (or better yet, a 351) with a cam, headers, heads, a good intake and plenum and the only thing an M5 will see is your taillights.
My next door neighbor has been building one of these for over the past two years. He's doing a super job and expects to be done this year. He has a friend who comes by from time to time who has built two and currently owns and uses as his daily driver his second one. I think he has a .30 overbore which would give him 306 cubic inches. With his Kenny Bell supercharger, he has been dyno'd at 465 HP to the rear wheels and 415 lb/ft of torque to the same place. This, in a 2230 pound car.
So even the new M5 would never stand a chance against this baby. It could only hope.

well...
Well---I actually never really knew what an m5 had in it to be honest with you. I know it definitely wasnt any of the cars I shopped in the less than 35000 range. I figured it was another 3 series that I could easily outpull...You cant know the hp of every car can ya? I generally never race..I was actually behind him and he was in front at the light. Light turned green he floored it so I followed suit for fun. Then I realize I hit my rev limiter trying to keep up. :buff:
I couldnt believe how quickly his car shot ahead...
Well its all good...The car was friggin sweet looking too...it was like getting kicked in the nuts by Carmen Electra.

I think pretty much you deserve this roasting Silver...BUT, given you're from Philly, it's not really a surprise...(!) You have to know your opponents...saw another ridiculous post here awhile back about one of us trying to race a Viper for God's sake...
How about them Bucs? OHHH, gee, almost forgot....and the Lightning?

I'm sure the M3 and M5 are a blast to drive.
That said, I'd rather have a TL for the long haul given that it's more likely to be reliable and cheaper to keep running.
Then there's the subjective styling thing. The current generation 7 series is one hideous vehicle. The new 5 series is too. Chris Bangle is gunning for the 3 series in an effort to scare off buyers...
It's a shame 'cuz the previous 5 series was a nice looking car as is the current 3 series.
BMW devotees should hunt down Bangle and break his arms so he can't lift a pencil ever again.
