Loud noise with back windows open

I was driving with some friends this weekend, and noticed a problem that I was wondering if anyone else has it, and if there is a solution.

I had all my windows closed while driving on the highway. A friend in the back seat opened the back window, and the entire car made a LOUD noise, vibration. Due to the wind, it sort of sounded like the bass turned up to 100X. It was so bad I had to pull over, since I thought there was a problem with the car.

I then went to test it out, and could reproduce this at will. If I drive over 35, and open the back windows only.. the car makes an ungodly noise. If I crack the front window a little, then it goes away.

Has anyone else noticed this?

thanks.. and sorry if this is already addressed somewhere.

Welcome to the club.

Due to dynamic design of the car, this seems normal to me. The loud loud noise in high speed. You could try to search this forum, there should be lots of threads discussing more about this issue.

I complained about this just after I got my car.

I spent a few minutes this weekend driving the TL with the front windows and moonroof open. I couldn't take it for very long and closed the windows and turned on the a/c.

I drove my '99 Toyota Solara yesterday with windows and moonroof open, stereo cranked, and it was quite nice.

It's definitely something about the shape of the TL that causes the turbulance. I don't like it, but it's not like I'd not have bought it if I'd known. I love the car otherwise!

Regards,

Yep - we had a discussion in another thread about this - or a complaint session really.

Its kinda like back in the day of the Six-Million Dollar man episodes, where our Hero, Steve Austin has to walk through that white spinning tunnel thing and it makes that awful, skull splitting sound. Yep - have it so I do not put the windows down in the back for fear of rupturing something or getting sucked out of the car.

What he ^ said...

Same comment as rets...

Opening the rear window creates a venturi effect making a vacuum in the car's interior which builds and then releases sounding like the whole car is a big bass drum because there is no place air can come in to replace that removed by the low pressure - until you open a front window.

It is normal and quite common with most cars that are aerodynamic. I suspect that opening the moonroof might also relieve the pressure differential.

I noticed this with moonroof open and back windows open (fronts closed). Figured I could live with A/C after that. I thought my rear deck was going to tear off and flip up across my rear window.

OMG! Venturi Effect! Now I can't stop thinking about Lisa Lombardi who sat in front of me in 6th grade science class.

The TL is not alone in being subject to THE VENTURI EFFECT. My Jeep does it. They've discussed it on a few of the Infiniti vehicle boards.....

It happened on my 92 Accord as well. You ought to hear my wife's 2000 Cherokee at about 70mph with the back windows down!

1992 4Runner exhibits the exact same behavior.

There are so many windows, however, that you can open the back, sunroof, or one of the other four windows and relieve the internal pressure.

Those of you who are old enough to remember when it was easy to close a car door without cracking a window should understand. Even a crappy-built modern car is more airtight than old cars.

If you open another window in the car, it helps to alleviate the issue.

this is a really old thread, but it's because a vacuum is created when a rear window is opened with all others closed.

edit: lol just read the answer was given mid way through the page. I have a bad habit of just reading the OP.

Thankfully this is no longer a problem. Back in the old days of the last decade when this thread was started, the air was much thicker.

Now in modern times with our TLs, it's smooth sailing! :-)

(This thread wasn't just revived--it was exhumed!)

Why do I hear wind noise with my windows down? This is the worst car I've ever owned please help me I'm at my wits end. If I put Dynamat over the window openings will the noise go away?
