Question Lip Spoiler - Questions

I bought a lip spoiler for my 05TL. I got it through ebay and only paid $120, that included the shipping costs. The spoiler looks to be OEM but it came without left trunk spring, templet for installation, washers nuts and the spoiler itself does not have studs. The double sided tape is already on it.

Did anyone install this a lip spoiler without drilling or the left trunk spring? I am debating if the tape only will hold it in place and if the trunk will open and close properly.

Thanks in advance.

Martin

Greetings,
Most of the non OEM spoilers I have seen do not have studs/nuts, thus do not require drilling etc.. The two sided adhesive tape installed on the spoiler is all that is required - and most that have installed spoilers like yours from Ebay are very happy with them.

Most important though.. Like you mentioned it didn't come with a template. Test "fit" the spoiler on your trunk and either use tape or a wax pencil to outline exactly where you want it.. Once you actually stick the spoiler down it will stay where it lyes... You'll only get one chance at getting it perfect etc.
Also, the other important step is to ensure you wipe the trunk bonding area down with a "wax and silicon" remover. You need to ensure all wax and other adhesive "inhibitors" are removed.. This step alone will result in a long lasting worry free installation.

Cheers

Thanks KFSmitty. I was affraid that the tape might not hold the spoiler and it will fly off and hit another car causing damage for which I dont want to be held responsible for.
Thanks again.

It's only necessary to change the trunk spring with the wing spoiler, not the lip. I've had my Ebay spoiler on for 6 months....not a single problem.

I have the lip that comes with the A-Spec kit, and it was installed by the dealer before I bought it. Twice I've had the adhesive come loose, and all that was holding it securely was the two studs in the middle. Both times it was replaced under warranty. It may not have come loose because I check stuff like that all the time. However, if I'd let it go, it may have come off on the highway.

I would not trust the tape, but sounds like others have had no issues. Maybe mine was installed incorrectly (didn't clean the surface or something).

Good luck.

I would definitely say you had "poor prep" and/or process by the installer. When installed/used properly the tape/adhesive (3M) has unbelievable grip and longevity.
Most likely they applied over a fresh wax or sealant job..?

Hopefully your third install works out.

3M tape

A lot of other car companies actually use the 3M tape as OEM. The new BMW M5 OEM rear lip comes with the 3M tape.

Like it was stated earlier, you need to remove all wax in that area so the tape can really stick like its supposed to.

Has anyone attempted to remove a lip spoiler later one when it's stuck on with the double-sided tape? Easy? Tough? Does the tape ruin the paint? Thanks.

I've had mine from trimking almost a year now as well... no problems... but I did have to remove the 3M tape that he put on it (two narrow strips) and apply my own 3M tape (purchased from Home depot) three strips wide to make sure it stuck right.

I wanted to get this spoiler as well. I like the fact that there is no holes required. I was wondering can it be removed if I don't want it anymore or for some reason or another?

Will the paint be damaged or look really new under it? Just wondering if I had it on there for lets say a year and decided I wanted a different look.

thanks

SilverStoneTTL,

Bought it from spoiler_overstock on ebay. The color matches perfectly. There is one on ebay now,

Sorry for the delay.

The tape on the spoiler is the same type they use on the badges and they come off with liberal use of hairdryer heat and dental floss to work them lose. Paint seems to hold up fine. I like the screw type of spoiler although the side guards are held on with the same stuff and seem to hold fine with no screws and are about the same length.
