"Light" doors
So ive had my tl for a year now, and now im beginning to notice how light the doors seem to be. but really it only seems like the front doors. when people close them they slam pretty hard and rattle a bit. they seem to feel so light and hollow compared to others cars, im not even talking about more expensive lexus or mercedes. my dad as 09 accord closes better and seems more "tight."
anyone else notice this?

it's not that they're light. they close automatically when not positioned in a few certain spots, assisted closing, if you will. when you add in someone not knowing that thinking they need to push the door to have it close, you're adding momentum and there is already little to no resistance, which is why it slams.
just remember yourself and remind others that a very small nudge is all thats needed, the door will do the rest itself.

i see. not even i realized that. they just seemed so light and so easily slammable.

Full of water...
they are actually pretty heavy, but they are balanced and weighted to close automatically. if they were light then there would bee no momentum to close like they do. same with the trunk. it is weighted to close with little effort. some remove all these counter balance weights in order to free up some overall vehicle weight. i think there is one up front for the hood too.
i love it, but hate that i have to remind every passenger that they dont need to SLAM the door.

has anybody tried using the door checkers off an accord, they seem to be a different design without the groves the tl has. imma try one door out this weekend, kind of tired of people slamming my doors even after i tell them to be gentle

i cringe when people slam my doors. these things are heavy. the rattle is usually the after effect of so much weight slamming on the door frame.

The "self-closing" doors drive my wife crazy. She doesn't slam them, so that's not the issue. The problem is that because she is short, she's used to grabbing the door and pulling it closed while still getting into the car. When she does this in the TL it continues to close and squashes her. We've had the car for 4 years now and she still complains about it.

I hate it when people slam my door. Thank god none of the people that come into my car slam my door, other than my girlfriend when she gets pissed. But when she's not pissed she understands that I don't like having my door slammed.
It sometimes annoys me when I have my windows down a bit and I close my door and it rattles when it closes, I dont even need to slam it for it to do this.

Almost a duplicate discussion going on here. I'll let this thread stay open because it seems to have a different line of conversation...

the accord door checker i ordered came in, ill throw it on this weekend and see what it does. they seem to be the same design overall (lenght, size, bolting pattern) except that the tl"s rod is round and has detent groves and the accord's rod is flat with no groves. hopefully it works out.

Hold the phone! My doors DON`T close on their own! My 94 Legend had a little thing when the door got close to closing it kinda "sucked" them closed. Is my 04 TL supposed to do this as well?

good news
the accord door checkers did eliminate the self closing feature on the tl. i did the driver side door this weekend and took me about 20 mins to swap out the door checkers. the door still feels a little "light" but it has more of a drag which causes the door to no longer self swing back.
great mod for those who are tired of the "automatic closing doors"
i plan on doing the passenger side this coming weekend.
stock tl "groved door checker"
accord "flat" door checker
compared side by side
accord door checker installed

yea you are going to have to remove the door panel to get to the checker and also pull back on the white clear door seal just a bit to take out the door checker once you take of the 3 nuts bolting the checker to the door (2 on the door, 1 on the body)
nah i wouldnt mind at all, but i wont have time till this weekend.

Thanks to speed4ever! Using the door checkers off an Accord fixes the problem. The doors now behave like normal doors instead of trying to close automatically.
I used the part numbers speed4ever posted and ordered the Accord door checkers online. I installed them last night without too much trouble. Like he said, you have to take off the door panels and pull the white plastic seal to get access to the door checker.

Doors not staying open: dangerous and poor design.
The passenger and driver side doors will not stay open, and often close on to legs, shins, hands, head etc. I have a 2006 TL and this defect is extremely annoying and dangerous, especially since I have children that could be seriously injured from this problem. My driveway is on a very, very, very slight incline (10 degrees at the most) and EVERY time I park I have to take about 5-10 seconds to hold the door open w/ my foot or hand while it is fully open to ensure it doesn't slam back on to me. I told the local dealer/repair shop regarding the problem in 2008 and 2009, and they claimed to have never heard of such a problem (yeah, right). Some other websites have made the very unhelpful suggestions: there is no problem, it is a neat European feature to have the door close automatically, etc. Bottom line is that the problem is dangerous and Acura is hiding the complaints or unprofessional, in my opinion. Hell, the door just slammed back on to my wife's head today and gave her a golf-ball size lump on her head. After today's accident, I am considering selling it to get another manufacturer's sedan that won't endanger me and my family every time we get in or out it. BTW - the previous posting/suggestions of installing Honda parts does sound helpful; it is pretty f****** sad that the dealer/manufacturer will not (and did not) offer such remedy in the first place.

Sorry, but I don't see the value of bumping TWO old threads to rant on this topic.
I've moved current posts to the other thread (https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/05-tl-front-doors-wont-stay-open-dealer-says-no-adjustment-possible-635174/#post13131225).
