'05 TL Front Doors Won't Stay Open--Dealer Says No Adjustment Possible
The front doors on my 05 TL will not stay open when getting in or out of the car. Tension needs to be added to the mechanism that is supposed to hold the door open much the same as added tension to the "closer" on a office door. Dealer says they have had complaints from other TL owners on this issue but Acura does not have a fix. Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas?
No ideas, but my 07 TL try's to nail me everytime I'm getting out. So far the door has smashed my head, hit me back in the car while I was bent over getting something and hit my shin in that same spot that hits the coffee table
Assuming its not broken, they just have weak detents. Call it the "auto-close" feature. It helps to not throw the door open also, it tends to just bounce back. Try opening and steadying it before letting go. Very annoying, I've gotten banged in the shins a few times, too.
i am really suprised this hasnt been discussed more on this forum... both my TL's (06 & 08TL-S) have the same issue, especially when they were new... if you push the door open, reach around to grab something, and go to get out.. the door CLOSES ON YOU !! it never fails..
it pisses my girlfriend off so much... but i'll tell ya, after a while and alot of use, the door doesnt do it as violently and as often...

actually i like that lol i concider it a feature!
when i get out of my car i never have to turn around to shut the door,i love that lol...
the reason it does it is because we have heavy ass doors, and i highly doubt its a faulty check strap.

we could ask for carbon fiber doors maybe?

like i said before,i dont have any issues with this "problem"
honestly its all about how heavy our doors are and that maybe they used a check strap that was designed to loose for our cars, maybe they should have used one with a tighter weight limit

Is it me, but the door has 3 points where it can stop, on other cars I think it's 2 points.
Yes these doors are heavy and they open wide.
I guess the engineers figured that it's for the American market and that all American are big, so it couldn't hurt to have a huge opening.
But if you time it correctly you can make the door close when you get into your seat.
Bystanders may think it some sort of Acura technology

The way the door is curved toward the top, if it hits someone in the back while they are getting something out of the car it will be very painful. We already know what is does to legs! HELP!
Doors not staying open: dangerous and poor design.
The passenger and driver side doors will not stay open, and often close on to legs, shins, hands, head etc. I have a 2006 TL and this defect is extremely annoying and dangerous, especially since I have children that could be seriously injured from this problem. My drive is on a very, very, very slight incline (10 degrees at the most) and EVERY time I park I have to take about 5-10 seconds to hold the door open w/ my foot or hand while it is fully open to ensure it doesn't slam back on to me. I told the local dealer/repair shop regarding the problem in 2008 and 2009, and they claimed to have never heard of such a problem (yeah, right). Some other websites have made the very unhelpful suggestions: there is no problem, it is a neat European feature to have the door close automatically, etc. Bottom line is that the problem is dangerous and Acura is hiding the complaints or unprofessional, in my opinion. Hell, the door just slammed back on to my wife's head today and gave her a golf-ball size lump on her head. After today's accident, I am considering selling it to get another manufacturer's sedan that won't endanger me and my family every time we get in or out it.
BTW: does "DeltaBoxxx" work for Acura? Anyone that thinks this is not an actual problem needs to have their head examined (hopefully before the door(s) slam back on to their own head).

Well there is a fix for this problem.
Search the forum about the accord stopper (i dont record the number of that part)
It is simply a plug and play no modification necessary (just replace the acura one with accord one)
After that you door does not bonce back at all

I have to do the same thing...open the door and make sure it doesnt want to close by itself. I really have no idea how you could possibly hurt your head though when exiting the vehicle...what do you do lead with your head? Make it the last thing out of the car? The idea behind you having a huge knot on your head makes me laugh...sorry but it seems kind of ridiculous. I open my door..with my hand on it at all times and step out...than i let go of the door and it politely closes itself. I dont see where your big issues is honestly. If i were you I'd get a safety 2x4 or something else to prop it open while your family pops out head first.
I've never had a problem - at least not after the first few days of ownership. I mean really, how many times do you need to get your shins whacked before you figure it out?

Use the detents in the "strap". If those are missing/worn/defective, then yeah, I hear ya and you need to replace the part. Hopefully warranty or good will.
But if they are working properly, you just need to take your time and make sure the door catches a detent before entering/exiting.
It's not that hard to be smarter than your car door.
(And, BTW, a 10 degree incline is actually quite a lot and I could see where that would require extra care.)

Looking for a lawsuit are we? Seriously, learn how to use the doors. ALL car doors can be dangerous, just like EVERYTHING. It is not a "problem", it is a feature that has been there since day 1 when you bought the car, if you didn't like it then, you shouldn't have bought it. I mean really, how hard is it to open a car door and hold it open until you get out. Its not like acura is going out of their way to try and harm you like you seem to think.

BTW - the previous posting/suggestions of installing Honda parts does sound helpful; it is pretty f****** sad that the dealer/manufacturer will not (and did not) offer such remedy in the first place.
Posts moved from the other zombie thread on this topic. The other thread contains info on the Accord stopper which is reported to address the (too) easy-close feature.

good news
the accord door checkers did eliminate the self closing feature on the tl. i did the driver side door this weekend and took me about 20 mins to swap out the door checkers. the door still feels a little "light" but it has more of a drag which causes the door to no longer self swing back.
great mod for those who are tired of the "automatic closing doors"
i plan on doing the passenger side this coming weekend.
stock tl "groved door checker"

accord "flat" door checker

compared side by side

great info - i have the same door problems as everyone else. Thought it was kinda neat (self closing door) until my gf got wacked by the door - not so cool now.
Anyhow Acura says it's not a problem and no one has complained about it.
any other ideas? I like the honda part approach but my '08 is still in warranty

I am 6'5" so I am implying that I probably got pretty long arms...ie: I got a pretty good reach. When I get into my car and the door is left wide open, it is a bit of stretch for me to reach out and pull the door closed. And, as time went by, and I got more and more used to the car, I sort of got into a pattern of how to get into the car and have the door close behind me. And I like that.
So, if/when, you get your TL door to be left hanging wide open, won't your girlfriend then just have another problem of having to practically step back out of the car to pull the door closed, once she is in?

but the honda accord part approach is the only viable solution to this "feature" that we have.
as you can see in the pictures above, the checker is a shorter piece without the two notches.
if you're not wanting to do the fix above, tell your gf to learn how to operate this feature.
Do not swing the door open.
I'm a new owner of an '06 TL. I also discovered that "automatic door close" feature. I'm used to it now and I like it. If I want the door to stay open, I just open it wider. Otherwise, I open it, slide in, and the door closes nicely behind me. If it's a problem for you, how about just keeping a hand on the door handle as you enter the car?
Thanks for the tips on the Honda closers! I'm going to get this done next time I take it in.
It's funny, but like most other owners, I've learned how to deal with this but my g/f absolutely hates this feature; it bugs her enough to nag me to get a different car! What I've learned is - you open the door to one of the available 'detent' positions, and it will hold. But she just can't seem to get the hang of that! And even I still get 'hit' once in a while ...
