How Far Off Is Your Navi?

I have been reading in the Navi manual and it says in there somewhere that your location as indicated by the Navi may be off from your car's actual location by (quoting from memory now) something like 300-900 feet. In the past three weeks, it does seem to me that the degree it's off is more than that, especially as when I arrive at my destination, most of the time it says "destination is on the left" and it almost always is significantly off to the right, or vice versa. I have also noticed that it almost always has my car located quite a ways behind intersections as I am crossing them, or before a bridge begins when I am almost across a river. Anyone else having these issues? I casually asked the service dealer while getting my car washed there (a little freebie they offer that I don't think too much of, but I happened to be going by) if the Navi needed to be re-calibrated somehow, which he kind of blinked at, said "that's not how it works" but if I wanted someone to look at it for real, I should make a service appointment. From his reaction it seems like he thought my experience was normal. I'd be interested in the experiences/observations of others. Thanks!

While test-driving a TSX the navigation system told me the dealership was on the left side of the road, instead of the right. It was a sizeable road, 6 lanes with a large median. The salesman said it happens sometimes, but I don't know whether it's a GPS accuracy problem or a mapping/software problem. I guess my point is that I've seen the behavior you're talking about happen firsthand.

I can't recall the details but if your location is off, there is a way to correct it. It is detailed in the Navi Manual.

If the car cannot asses the satellite (blocked by buildings, mountains, etc) it determines its position by reckoning using the internal computer sensors. That method can be significantly off. If you start your car in an underground garage and the drive into a city with tall builidngs it will not have a clue where its at! It needs the satellite's signal to get its bearings.

Mine has been fairly accurate within the 300 feet range. However, it does have a tendancy to take me on side trips around areas like neighborhood blocks... just to put me back on the same road/direction I was already going.

The Navi-Gods having fun maybe?

It's fairly accurate, but you shouldn't trust it to tell you which side of the road your target is on, or other small details like that. Despite all the TL's high-tech goodies, driving with your brain engaged is still required.

first time i was showing the navi off to the friends, we were headed to a bar, the bar was maybe 300 feet straight, but it told me to take a left turn into a business complex, i felt like an idiot

You should definitely review the route before taking off to give it a quick sanity check. I try to do that each time now, if for nothing else to familiarize myself with the turns coming up.

I had a "blip" only once while I was driving downtown. I suspect that's because of the GPS signals bouncing off the buildings. But if self corrected afterwards, recalculated the course and all was fine.

It's pretty accurate to 10 feet or so. When it says destination, the destination is there.

My only complaints of the navi is it needs updated maps and that the navi sometimes tries to make me go through strange routes when I know there's a more direct and easier route.

Mine's about the same accuracy. It announces turns with just enough time to make them which is just right for me. Corrections can be made on the diagnostic menu but you have to be careful. I guess the mapping is pretty good in my area as I have never been lead astray.
