Honda ATF DW-1
hey guys,
I know i know. This is another atf thread but hear me out... I've been searching and searching about ATF fluid for the TL for the last two days and i havent found my answer... This is my first auto since ive been driving... From what i read, Redline ATF is the way to go, but after checking the price on each quart makes me .. i got my 06 TL last November and changed out the ATF twice (every oil change ) to get the fluid to be pink again. I've been using Z-1 because my mechanic carried it and only charged me $35 to do a 1x3 with the Z-1. I took my MDX down to get an oil change and he showed me that honda switched over to DW-1. From what i read the ATF is Semi Synthetic with maybe less FM... Finally honda did something about their stupid Z-1, each time the mechanic took off the drain bolt, he shows me how much metal was attached to the bolt. When we put new Z-1 into the tranny, it shifts really fast and smooth for about 5 days, then it goes back to normal. so does Z-1 fluid break down that fast?
I know that IHateCars and others have tested Redline in their car but im just not read to make that leap of faith. So i was thinking, since DW-1 is better than Z-1.. when i do my next ATF 1x3 ill do two quart of DW-1 and one quart of Redline Type F.... is that smart or should i just do all 3 of the DW-1.. and no i dont want to go all Redline? can anyone chim in?
i wanted to get mobil 1 syn ATF but they dont sell them at walmart anymore, i remember seeing it for under $6.
you might also be thinking, Dang this guy is being a cheapass, but i have 3 other car to maintain which i pay for all of them.. 02 MDX, 02 TL, 06 Accord, and my 06 TL, The maintenance adds up thats why i dont want to fully go down the Redline path (even for my 06 TL).
thanks in Advance

How many miles does your car have?• On the next ATF do 1x3 all TYPE F. believe me its better that way. Since you still have Z1 in there, it'll make it 50/50ish. Then wait on the next oil change, save $ and another 1x3 Redline Type F, then on the 3rd depending if yours shift harsh go with mix D4 rather than DW1.

I just did a 3x3 for the first time in my wife's 04 Accord V6. Her fluid was never changed with 80k. The fluid change was literally easier than doing the motor oil. After the 3x3 the fluid is 100% pink now and the car shifts like new. I used the DW1 fluid which I assumed replaced the original Z1. No complaints whatsoever. The fluid change was simple, was available at any local dealership, shifts great, and the fluid is pink again.

my car has 79k right now.. when i bought it, it had 68k.. the tranny fluid was drained once at 59k by the dealer...
since i've bought it, i've had two oil changes, two atf 1x3 , and changed the spark plugs.
thanks for the info JT and jisleyjr..
anymore input on mixing Redline type F with DW-1? it would be 1qt redline and 2qt DW-1

I agree...I dont have any real hard facts nor am I a professional on how fluids work, but I personally would NOT want to be mixing fluids. These fluids were designed to work a certain way and when you start mixing stuff it can potentially change the charecteristics of the fluid. Again, I dont have any facts its just what seems plausible and what makes sense to me. If it were my car I would simply do a 3x3 with honda's latest DW1 fluid and call it a day.
