HID/LED bulb swap idea
HID/LED bulb swap idea
A thought just crossed my mind, and I don't know how farfetch'd it is. But I was looking at the projector LED headlights in the Infiniti Q50, and I was thinking... would it be possible to switch out an HID bulb for an LED bulb when the HID goes out?
If I'm not mistaken, HPLED's don't require ballasts, so the ballast could either remain disconnected or removed completely, and the LED would be take the place of the HID bulb, behind the stock lens/projector. Is that even possible? I have no idea how an HID setup looks in terms of connections, so forgive me if I'm being silly. Maybe someone more experienced with headlight units could chime in on this.

The quick answer to your question is no, absolutely not. HID bulbs operate on extremely high voltage, opposite of LEDs. However, if you can find a bulb that fits and power it properly (obviously, no ballasts), then it's theoretically possible. Just like it's possible to retrofit an HID projector in place of halogens. Keyword is theoretically...
If you can find a powerful enough bulb, a way to focus the directed light of the LED, a way to mange the large amount of heat generated by the LED base, and do this all for a reasonable cost then by all means go for it.
There's a reason your typical cars don't come with LED headlights and it's because the HID lights are more cost effective and have better performance.

That's debatable. LEDs are probably the most efficient form of lighting in existence. They generate very little heat. The resistors that step the voltage down are another story, however. It depends entirely how the system is designed. I can build you an LED lighting system that, with the same power consumed by an HID, is WAY brighter.
Most new cars typically do come with LED lighting systems now.
I think the point here is that there is not a direct replacement option for the 3G TL.
