Headliner Tech Svc Bulletin

Anyone have an update on any technical service bulletin about the drooping headliner? Big surprise, VIN 45,000 and I have it...car is 3 weeks old. Actually, I probably wouldn't have noticed if not for this board so thanks. But when comparing it to the front part of where the headliner meets the moonroof, obviously an issue.

Anyway, a week or 2 ago someone posted something about Acura being aware of the issue and sending something to dealers. Did that happen? any copies of TSBs?

I spoke today with a rep for Acura Customer Service and he indicated that a service bulletin for the headliner problem was being prepared. He didn't indicate when it would be released, but it didn't sound like it was too far off.

they are probably just recommending the epoxy they tried on mine. If done correctly, it should hold. They messed mine up, so it did not work so I went the other route. I will be curious to see what they have come up with - other than the glue.

I heard they are redesigning the headliner due to the dropping issue and also a rattle issue.

take it for what it is worth.

Yeah, when the headliner droops the thin sheet metal rattles. I epoxied mine about a month ago and it's still holding strong!

Do you guys that have the headliner problem drive with the moonroof open a lot? It seems that lots of people don't have any problem, like myself, but I rarely open the roof since I like driving in quiet most of the time and even if I do open the moonroof, It's usually on roads where I don't drive fast. Just curious, but do the previous generation TL's have the same method to attach the headliner?

I had the headliner drop and I have only had the moonroof open once or twice for a short period of time. So, I don't think that airflow causes the problem, it's just bad design/glue.

Previous TLs do not have this absurd way of holding the headliner on. Two things are different - they moved the cabin light back in the new TL. Old TL is was near the moonroof - this added support. The second difference is the old TL (my 2002) has a lip around the moonroof which supports it. Don't know why they changed the approach. Also don't know why they redesigned the airbag thing on the passenger dash. You pop an air bag, now your dash needs replacing, where in my 2002, it looks like a separate air bag - not ripping through the dash. I don't know - somehwere you would hope there was an improvement behid the changes.

There's usually at least one reason behind every change - cost conservation!

My headliner fell down within a week of purchasing. Fortunately, this was my only problem and I expected it (after reading this forum.) I was indignant; the dealer fixed it right away. No problem since, which has been about 4 months. Its been the only problem that I have had, and I think is relatively minor, although you would think that they would have fixed it by VIN 45K (mine is 38K)...

I'll ask about it when I pick up my car from the dealer....

Does anyone with VINs in the 50s and 60s have droopy headliner?

Right. In the long run probably not this one. We need a bean-counter at Acura to compare the cost of keeping the headliner as it was or the cost of the multiple repairs and the wages paid to techs at acura shops. This cut corner may have back fired on them. Although, I would bet many people (not on this forum) are driving around like how mine was - drooping but not enough to notice. I bet I would not have seen it or thought to check it out.

My vin's in the 56K range with no problems yet - bought it late June, '04 with almost 2k miles on the odometer. Only minor problem is (was) the air deflector making a rattle with the moonroof in its vent position - fixed it with 3 strips of soft Velcro.

The TSB is already out. It came out in April. A good place to find out about TSBs is Edmunds Maintenance Guide:

http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/r...step2.9.Acura*

The recall is here:

PhilB, the info you provided is very good and kind of accurate, but they are slightly different to those real TSBs directly from Acura, at least some #s are varied.

Wouldn't contact adhesive like 3M #77 be the way to go? Epoxy sounds like overkill, especially if you ever need to remove the headliner. Or I am not understanding how the epoxy is being used, and where?

RR-the epoxy just glues the top piece of velcro to the metal cross bar, so you can still separate the velcro when you need to remove the headliner. Guess you didn't read the Headliner Journals. See the 3G garage for full details.

My dealer fixed the headliner problem (not sure if they glued it or what) and threw in a free moonroof visor. I like the look with the visor, so I was cool with it. I got that done a few thousand miles ago and it's still holding. My VIN is in the 5000's from what I remember.
