Talking Getting Tint Today!

Dont know if this goes under "parts" but here it is.

I have been saying over and over that I wanted tint, but finally bit the bullet today and am having it installed as I write this. 35% non-metallic tint - because 35% is the legal limit here and it looks OK by me.

Strange reason to get it done now, but I got rear ended by a Mercedes ML last Friday. It wasnt bad and looked like it would buff out, so no worries. ML dude is picking up the tab. I did have it detailed and all the scratches did come out ( ) and then I started thinking....my windows are so clean - might as well drop it off to have tint installed right now. So I did.

I havent seen her yet with the tint installed, but am excited about it! I know it isnt much guys, but its at least a first step.

i think tinting is one of the best mods you can do for the money. ok it might not be a mod but that change has the most impact on the look of the car.

^^^^ I must agree, it changes the look of the car so much and costs so little compared to other exterior mod. Esp. in black! BTW idk if this is a dumb question...but what color is DWP? Or do you mean WDP?

Yup...WDP.....not DWP

sorry....I am still kinda a noob when it comes to my TL.

BTW - I dont have pics, but am pleased with the tint job. They did the things most folks here feel are important: they covered the 3rd brake light instead of cutting around it and they covered the entire 1/4 rear window instead of merely tinting up to the gasket.

Now I think I want a rear spoiler. Any opinions as to which looks best on DWP? The OEM wing or OEM lip???? Pics of each???

I will try to get pics up soon. I dont have internet at home so it makes it tough.

I live in Macon, GA - about 1 hour south of Atlanta. I got the work done at "Fine Line Auto." They have a computer controlled laser that cuts the tint to a perfect fit.

Keep your windows and the seals clean, as tints tend to scratch badly on 3rd gen TL unless you had felt applied inside the doors.

Just stay away from metallic tints. Solar Gard NR film is safe. That's what I have on mine and no problems.

Just to let you know, I had mine done at Performance Tint in Columbia and they are now INSISTING on moleskin on TL's. They wont install tint without it and said "we cant guarantee it wont scratch unless you moleskin it"

Guess they learned their lesson with 3G TLs!

Myth! I have metallic on my TL and yet to have a problem with Navi. The manual clearly states that it "may" (may being the operative word) cause interference. This is just to cover their ass that is all.

Patel - I got the 3 year tint instead of the lifetime tint. The cost was $198 installed. That included tax. I did not get the metallic lifetime tint because I didnt want to take any changes of losing my navi signal.

Fine Line was great! That laser machine cut the tint awesome!

JBCRITCH, thanks for the earlier reply but you said you did not get the metallic lifetime tint so if you don't mind me asking, can you give me exact details of what kind of tint you got because i also have navi and do not want the window tint distorting my navi signal. Thanks.

...I wish I knew. They only have 2 choices - metallic and non-metallic. I dont have photos yet - so sorry. They will show you the tint if you roll by there. You know where Fine Line is? Near the mall on Mercer University Drive.

Tint is good, but watch out for bored cops

Hey everyone I'm new to this board...I'm in NJ and any tints on the front passenger windows is illegal, however many people get it anyway because it looks great especially on my black TL. The problem is cops, if they are bored or feel like they have not harrased enough people that day the tint will be a reason for them to pull you over. It's a 50 dollar fine that does not carry points, I've built a awesome collection of these because I refuse to remove them. Not only does it look great it blocks the sun and annoying SUV headlights in your rear view. Just something to keep in mind, if you don't care getting pulled over once in a while go for it. 20% or 5% is great there really is no point getting 35%.

Well I actually like my 35%....and if you have never faced a Georgia summer - trust me - any little bit of block will help! BTW - most cops in GA will actually take a key or knife to your tint if it is illegal - so your 5% tint would be all F'ed up in GA...and GA cops WILL ticket out of staters that drive through with tint darker than 35%. Being legal for me is required - I am an attorney so I see the cops and am in front of the judges all the time.

35% is fine IMO. Only at certain angles can you see the difference between 35% and 25%. Straight on, they look almost identical in the day time. Lots of threads with pictures on tints.

jb, i had another question...i have scheduled my tl to be tinted on monday at fineline..i just had a few questions to ask u...has the tint scratched at all yet since they do not install moleskin?...also does the machine cut it precise enough so the regular clear window does not show on the edges?...and do you think there work is worth the money because ugly signs on riverside does it for cheaper...and i dont know if it's a good idea but i'm going wit the llumar metallic film so i can get lifetime warranty and i have navi so hopefully it wont affect it...but i'd appreciate your comments...thanks.

I got my windows tinted yesterday. Formula One ultimate 40, $325. I'm not sure whether they did good job... there are still some tiny bubbles on back window, maybe they would disppear later? for the small fixed windows, they didn't put film to cover all the glass, so from outside you can see the gray rubber seals.

I would have done it myself if I could buy professional film.

Could someone please explain what you mean by covering the entire 1/4 rear instead of just covering up to the gasket??

They're talking about that smaller portion of the rear passenger windows. Some tint places cover the entire portion, while some places leave a small area untinted (which looks ugly IMO). I'll post some pictures up of my car next week (she's in the shop now...car accident). The tint place I went to did a VERY clean job. Not to brag, but my TL received a lot of compliments on the tint.

I actually noticed the small portion of the rear window untinted, and thought he did it b/c he couldn't reach that area. Turns out that from the inside, the tint covers the whole thing. However from the outside, it doens't look tinted, b/c the window extends past the rubber piece. The only way to get that part tinted is to actually tint the windows from the outside. (unless of course, they remove that part of the car and tint the whole window that way.)

Had my '06 TL windows tinted w/Pinnacle about 2wks ago and noticed ... when driving (evenings/early mornings) i look back through rear window at traffic i get a glare from their headlights. Looks like they all have halo's, right where the tint meets the rear window defogger lines . Installer says this is normal on a rear window tint, only solution is remove the tint. Anyone experience this or know if this is normal?

Thanks.

Yeah, I get that too. At 1st, i thought it was b/c the glue didn't dry yet, but im' guessing it's the norm.
