G35 vs TL-S

So it finally happened. I was on my way to Lake George NY with a passenger and some luggage. I pulled up on a blue 08? TL-S with 2 guys inside. To make a long story short, we did a 80-~130 pull. I had was ahead by a lot. Easily more than 5+ cars before I slowed down. He was auto and appeared to be stock. I recently added test pipes and a y-pipe. I didn't think I would get him by that much, I was surprised. Any thoughts? We definitely shouldve been closer.

There is no doubt your car is quicker than a stock 5AT TL-s with your current mod list. Plus, after 100 the 5AT TL (Base or Type S) falls on its face. That's probably where you put the most distance on him if I had to guess.

How does the car feel with the test pipes and y pipe?

Sonnick nailed it. The 5AT TL-S would've put up a much better fight if you guys started off at lower speeds.

OP, I think you should run against BostonSilverTypeS and his 5AT. NY isn't that far from here and we've been scheming on a NY/Boston meeting anyways

I'm down for a Boston/NY meet lol and Sonnick, it didn't feel all that diff in the beginning because the guy had disconnected the battery. But now that my ecu has had time to relearn my driving habits, I can honestly say there is a difference. Nothing substantial, but enough to feel that it pulls stronger. Especially at higher speeds.

And yes, you guessed right. I was slowly pulling him until we went into the triple digits where I began walking.

LOL ... Hope that you don't think I am an anti Acura/Honda, we do have them in my family (NSX/RL/TL/Honda Accord x2/CR-V and call me BS if you want). However if a story goes with TL killed G35 or others, it will be "cool, nice killed", but if it's being killed then "cool story bra, bro, w/e" .... har!

well, with his mods and the potent VQ, we already knew he pulled.

kind of a pointless story.
now, if the TL had mods and was a six speed, it would have been a better story.

Justin enjoys being sarcastic, hence the "cool story breaux" (lol ). Most who posted in this thread thus far, including Justin, mentioned the OPs G35 would have pulled regardless. The OP confirmed my assumption of how the race went and agreed with the other posters. I think we all agree here. No one said bahhhhhh GTFO G35s are sl000w. But I agree, there is some animosity between VQ and J series owners on wh0 iz dah fas+r dating back to when everyone thought the G35 was untouchable.

I'm not surprised at all by the outcome. I love my TL but even with full bolt on's, the TL is still a slow car. I have lost to every G I have encountered, and pretty much every other car for that matter. My sister has an 09 g37x auto which is stock and it puts bus lengths on my TL at any speed.

^ @ heauxes

Justn's right. Run a 6-speed if you can find one. Even a base 6-speed would put up a better fight at triple digit speeds than a 5AT TL-S.

6MT TL, base or Type S, will spank a G35.

I don't doubt the performance of a 6MT TL, but I do doubt that it would "spank" me. Unless the difference between that and the 5AT is really significant, I cant see it happening. Besides, I would love to own a 6MT TL-S; no bashing on my end.

^ It is indeed a significant difference, especially after 100. However, I'm confident you would pull a stock 6MT.

Good to know. I'm actually going to race a modded G35 6MT soon. He pulled me by half a car before; now that Ive added more mods, I hope the margin will shrink this time around.

No revup. Hes got I/E as far as I know. He was actually the one who recommended test pipes when we raced. He said it should close the gap.

Actually, the VQ vs J series argument dates back to the 5.5G Maxima vs 02-03 TL-S "war". (although mostly a war of words.)

It is pretty significant between the base models, so I'd assume it's roughly the same between the S models. I had a 5AT loaner once and I was surprised how sluggish it was. I'd say there's a solid 4 mph difference between the transmissions.

Take a night off! I'll have to get out early myself. It'll be cool running at night anyway, plus it'll be cooler temp wise..

Eh, maybe the '06 and earlier DE, but the '07's got the HR motor. More Hp, Tq, and a better power band.

The sedans, yes. The coupe never saw the HR motor, only the revup version. A stock HR sedan would spank a stock TL 6MT. There is a video on here Teteux posted vs. a HR G35 sedan. He got spanked and he had SRI/Jpipe. Fully bolted he would've gave it a good run though until mid 4th where the extra displacement/power would take over.

Otherwise the revup coupes are quick. I ran one with 'supposedly' only ART pipes/Ypipe/catback and pulled 1/2 car on him. I suspect he had more though.

A bone stock G35 is probably a second faster and traps at least 5 mph more in the 1/4 mile. You're modded, I don't see why you thought the results would be any different against a stock TL. Nice kill.

PS - where in NY are you and would you wanna run a RSX?

when i bought my tl-s auto i thought it'd be a pretty quick car...but after a year and half of ownership...its not as fast as ppl made it out to be. the automatic gearing is no good for performance, and against an 06+ civic si with i/h/e/tune will be a driver's race.

The base TL 5AT yea, but not the Type S. The Type S 5AT is usually good for 14.4-14.7 @96-97. There have been 1 or 2 members who ran 14.2-14.2 @98, but it doesn't happen too often. A bone stock G35 5AT of his generation is probably in the 14.2-14.5 range @97-98. Definitely a drivers race stock for stock, but once the G35 is modded it's no contest from any speed.
