FWD conversion to AWD

I would like to know how much money it will cost me to swap my FWD train for an AWD train in my TL?

No one has done it yet, but it IS possible.

With the right amount of $$$, ANYTHING is possible.

Start asking for quotes.

Possible but clearly not worth the expense for a system that might be buggy.

it'd probably be more economical to sell it and buy a 4G..

I don't even know if money could buy this. The SH-AWD system is managed by the ECU. I don't know how you would get the electronics working since we have different ECUs. Maybe those parameters could be written to our ECUs? Maybe swapping the entire drivetrain/engine/ecu from a 3.7? Who knows...that's one can of worms that I would never want to open.

exactly. money talks. to some people, 1 million dollars is nothing, and if they want to make an awd 3g tl, then they can get it. heck, if he wanted to spend like $10 million he can probably start a whole production line of replica 3G TL's with AWD lol

I would guess a minimum of about $60,000. Figure you would need a donor 4G. Then all of the fab to make it fit or mod the 4G to attach 3G body panels.

My dealership sometimes runs a special on the AWD conversion if you get it done with the 105k service. It's $995 for both and they can do it in an afternoon!

Probably simpler to try and fit the body of yours to a 4G. Which is likely impossible. Yet still simpler.

If you did the work yourself it probably wouldnt cost as much as one might think. If you were to find yourself a totaled sh-awd you would have most of everything you would need. Electronics would be the hardest part but not impossible as you would have them from the donor car. Ive contemplated doing it to my 2g a few times. I found a few donor cars for a reasonable price Back in he day everyone said it was impossible and cost to much to convert the 2g to a manual. I was the first and it wasnt that hard or expensive.

You would have a ton of work on your hands, I mean your exhaust would need to be custom, the mounts for the new engine/trans you will need because i'm fairly certain a J35 from a TLS or a J32 won't bold up to the transmission on a UA9. Then you would need to chop up the rear body, the reason the new TL lost so much trunk isn't because they are stupid, it's because the AWD system takes up so much room. It also cuts into the passenger leg room. I will take some pictures at the dealership today so you can see.

It is probably MUCH cheaper to buy a SH AWD 4G TL and CONVERT the exterior to look like a 3G.

I actually think about this all the time as I drive my 3G.. Wishing it was AWD.. But I really am not a big fan of the 4G looks. I wish Acura made the 3G TL available in AWD back then

But he wants the 3G look... lol.

A friend bought a 2000 Mirage DE, bought all the parts needed for the AWD exlcuding engine from japan off a real EVO 6.

$10,000 shipped

Started converting and paying off welder/fab job was $5,000 for the 3 months on the job.

There goes $15,000.

Now comes the JDM front clip from Canda, that was $8,000 shipped.
That's $23,000

Invest in another $5,000 in parts - $28,000.

Everything on this project took my guy $30,000 to do.... could've just had him a real $30,000 EVO 6 at the time for that same price.

To even attempt this kind of swap that no other body frame has this AWD set up... means more money invested an will need a 4G frame.

Good luck on money wasted..

Save the money, get an Evolution X or BMW 135/335/M3/M5 for that kind of price of an AWD.

I missed something. If he has an automatic transmission then the the RL SH-AWD transmission WILL bolt right up because the motor in the type-s is from the RL. If you were to buy all the rear components and a rl ECU I bet it would work.

buying the parts isnt the hard part.

Everything that must be custom made is the hard part.
fabricating mounts, fabricating a new drive train tunnel, etc.

Yeah that's the part you couldn't get around. It would be a lot of chopping, welding, and so on.

thats why I said its probably easier to buy a 4G and convert the EXTERIOR to look like a 3G. I'm actually curious how hard that would be.

thats not possible.

different dimensions ALL around the two vehicles.
you would end up with an even more ugly 4G TL....

plus, the rear fenders of both cars ARE unibody. you cant replace a rear fender by simply unbolting it...it has to be welded out. on both cars.

would look like SHIT because both have different styled rear fenders...
