Brake pad question....

HI guys, I did look in the 3rd Gen garage for brake pad opinions. I'm doing the brakes for the first time since I've owned the car with 36k on it. Has 67k now. I hear I have to replace the rotors too. I hear Advance Auto has good basic rotors. Sold. The question is brake pads. Can I get a good set of pads from Advance too? Acura ones are $75 front and 475 rear.... I only do like 10k miles a year.Work to be done this upcoming wknd.
Thanks for the input.

Agreed!!! I've had them for about 10K now on my 08 TL. Great for everyday driving. Very Quiet. I've also used them when i had my IS300, great then also. Lifetime warranty on them is a bonus.

I went with stockwise because they're in New jersey like I am and shipping for 4 rotors and 2 sets of brakes among other things was $14 so it was a no brainer. I've had my car for 10 years and my last brake job was the first one I didn't go all out and get $100 brakes and drilled and slotted rotors that don't last. Came to this conclusion after scouring many forums for the best brakes and rotors and they all said the same thing. Unless you're going to the track and have the money to keep replacing get Centric rotors and Centric ceramic pads. This isn't cheap stuff it's just Centric makes for everyone so the economies of scale brings the pricing down. Hell Brembo, EBC, and DBA are all made in China except for their highest end stuff and all of the low end stuff looks exactly the same when held side by side. Just my $.02. Honestly, I can't even really tell the difference and breaks and rotors have worn much longer. Centric rotors also have a black coating on the center ring of the rotors to prevent rust.

EDIT: I'm a money saving whore. So if you absolutely have to go with AdvanceAuto, which I love for the reasons I'm about to show you. BUY ONLINE PICK UP IN STORE. Use coupon code TRT30 for 30% off any order up to $50 savings. So if you get to the $50 savings cap. Make separate orders. Have fun saving money! P.S. Even with the coupon you'll find that online prices are cheaper still and better quality. But if you ever need ANYTHING that you can just pick up and need now like wiper blades, washer fluid, fuse set, air filter. Always always check dealigg.com for advanceauto coupons. They're better than the ones they advertise and with buy online pick up in store if you don't do it you're just wasting money. Good luck.
EDIT2" If you have discover you also get 5% back from advance going through the shopdiscover portal. Ok, I'm done.

Wow, thank you. A lot of information there. Coupon code sounds great if it works. My order will be 2 rotors at $47/ea, 2 rotors at $31/ea and pads for $37 and $40. How many times can I use the coupon for that? I'm assuming twice. And btw, that was a typo in my original post. Pads for 475 had better come with a happy ending!!

I highly doubt that you need rotors at all! That would be highly unlikely at your mileage

I replaced my Lexus IS300 pads with Centric and they were perfect. Inexpensive and put off very minimal dust. When it's time for the brakes to be done on the TL I'll probably get a set of those unless my buddy can hook me up with some OEM's at a discounted rate.

Centric is a very well known brand and are very reputable too.

No problem. Next time space it out over multiple orders for more savings.

When would you recommend you change the rotors at?

There's no set time. Replace them when they're worn out or warped.

^^Totally agree. If you drive reasonably (not autocross or track), rotor replacement should be rare, and only after many miles. Warping is a myth (rotors don't warp, the brake material gets unevenly distributed, causing uneven grabbing and vibration side to side).

I also agree that Centric is a great way to go--they are a huge manufacturer who manufactures most of the OEM, and aftermarket pads anyway. They also make Stoptech.

Just get Centric Posiquiet pads, slap them on in a half hour, then properly "bed in" the pads by doing 8-10 hard braking cycles slowing from 60 to 10 mph (but not coming to a stop). You'll love em! There, I just saved you hundreds.

You're welcome...

Ah, but WHICH centric pads? There's at least 4 or 5 different types for the 3G TL alone.

I got the posi-quiets. Squealed like hell for the 1st few thousand miles then quieted down. Excellent stopping power though, as good as the original pads.

I AGREE!!!! what is so funny! is you dont need a discount/coupon code to save money!!! you dont need rotors to begin with!!!

Update: I got the brakes done yesterday. I bought 4 rotors and 2 sets of pads. My mechanic said< Your rotors are perfect, I wouldn't replace them. They had no ridges on the outer edge and were perfectly smooth. So 2 sets of pads for $80 and gave my $60 and returned the rotors to Advance for a $122 credit, it was a good day.
There was and is no pulsating. Stops perfectly smooth.

You get the Posi-Quiets #105 or the #100 line which is meant to be exact oem. All the numbers after the first 3 describe the part placement and will be the same across all lines.
