It has now been close to 2 months since I bought my '06, which I love, it's probably one of the best cars I've owned.

But there is one thing about it that just drive me nuts, it's the damn DOOR. When I am trying to get out, I open it wide, and it seems, more than half the time I am always trying to catch it from rebounding and slamming shut!

There is something mechanically there that is done wrong -- why does the door love to rebound shut when you are trying to open it? Drives me

Is there a solution?

 

This is a "convenience" feature of the car and there is nothing wrong with the door. The door is made so that unless it is in one of two positions where it stays still, it will automatically close.

 

Now if they had a 3rd position, this would not be a problem, but those are things some cars have but.... they all cost some $$$

 

i actually really like that, all you gotta do is make sure u put the door in one of those positions. It's a really nice touch since when i get out, all i do is push the door enough to get out of that spot, and then hear it close behind me automatically.....really nice

 

I hated that too, at first. I noticed it on my 2004 TL. I have a 2006 TL now. I guess I'm just more used to it now. I think half the problem is when you swing the door open too forcefully. But........I still love my TL.

Open it "wide"? Where are you parking that you can actually do that? LOL... Yes, there is a solution.... ready for the punch line.... Don't open it wide anymore.

 

i cant believe i'm telling you how to open a door, but here goes: you hold it firmly until it locks into a position and then you get out. You do not swing it out or let go because it will bounce back. You should not let it swing freely regardless.

 

Most places I park are pretty tight so I can't swing it out to one of the lock positions, so it takes a lot of effort to hold the door open, get up without accidentally kicking the door plastic, grab my bag or whatever and get out without hitting the door on the next car or wall. For some reason it's really laborious after a long day. It'd be cool if I had a wide open space to park in. I've totally had the door rebound on my ankle many times while struggling to get out. Then again I still love the car, just had to get that out from a girl's perspective.

 

it is a pain in the ass when u r parked sideways on an incline, especially for new passengers.
I think position 1 is too close & 2 is too far and the door is heavy.
for about the 1st 2 months, the door would catch up to me too soon when i got in.
someone will get their foot stuck one day.
otherwise, i like the auto closing door very much.
p.s.
my driver's door sticks when i open it, i think it's the rubber seal.
the trunk too sometimes.

 

My passengers complain about it often. *sigh*

 

My girlfriend constantly complaines about it. She even claims it has bruised her legs on several occasions. I thought she was just being a princess, but, sounds like others are complaining too!

And btw, somehow, everytime the door slams on her leg, it's my fault. Go figure.

 

Per leedogg, push open the door firmly to a detent position; don't just throw the door open.
Stick your leg out so that the knee/leg is up against the door panel or map pocket when exiting. That will stop unexpected and excessive door rebound issues.
As for passengers, open the door for females, and tell all passengers to slowly open the doors otherwise. This will also have the nice secondary effect of minimizing door dings and scratches.

 

i agree the first position is to close and the second is to far. That's one thing i dont like about the car.

 

I dont really have a problem with the door, but my passengers do. i agree its a pretty hefty door but on the bright side, its big enough to protect me from most possible side impacts.

 

if im in a tight space (which I should not be even in in the first place), i put my fingers on the edge of the door to protect it, push it until my fingers touch the car beside me and slowly pull myself up and get out.

 

funny thing is i had a passenger get into my car last night and the door bounced back and closed on their leg, i laughed cuz i thought they're challenged with understanding how a door works but turns out it is "luxury (aka convenience) feature"

At least he searched. And revived this thread for newer members like myself. I had no idea this was a feature- my passengers complain about it all the time.

 

It can be a pain.
I think it also contributes to another issue I have heard many times on AZ---the slamming door!
I don't know how many times I've yelled at the kids to not slam the doors when they get out---but it's EVERYBODY that does it! You barely have to push on it to close it. Damned kids can't figure that out, even when I'm screaming at them like a Marine Corps Drill Sergeant! Ugh!
Now drop and give me 20!

 

I never have problems with the doors. I have a feeling other cars have problems due to all the dings on my car.

 

I love how the door works but my passengers hate it and espically my girlfriend LMAO always shuts on her but i dont care it works perfectly for me. Just got to get used to it i guess.

 

lol @ 4 year old thread...but yeah the whole thing with the door not staying open can get kinda annoying....I guess I've gotten used to it though

 

This is one of only a few peeves I have with the car design. If you're going to design this type, make tougher vinyl on the door inserts. Due to a passenger trying to keep their foot from being caught in the sill, I forked out a few hundred to repair a gash in the door pocket where a tennis shoe was dragged across the vinyl.

 

These doors suck. I've had over 40 cars in my life, and have never had one that the door swings back and nails my leg as much as this one. Now, I really like Acura, like the car overall, but this is friggin rigiculous.

By the way - my wife is the main driver, and she hates it also.

If you park at any incline - forget it.

I park in a level spot, away from cars and can swing it wide - it still bounces back no matter the method...

Be thankful for these doors. Ever tried to close a door on let's say...a Mercedes-Benz? More specifically a GL450? Aka my dads car. HATE those doors because you have to slam them for them to shut all the way. And the doors are heavy as hell. Passengers get out and try to close the door but it doesn't close all the way and they don't realize it. So you have to get out and close it properly.

One of the many things I hate about driving that damn car. It drives like a monster also.

 

I dunno... the S-Class I was messing with, The doors would automatically close if the door didn't close all the way.

 

My mom's 08 C350 is somewhat better but still. It's the rear doors that are the worst. Not enough weight to close on their own.

 

Yup, soft close doors! I have this on the 7 and love it.

IMO the doors don't bother me much anymore, I usually push it open, get out and let the door close itself

 

You'll get used to it if you haven't already.

 

Yep, one of my 8 cars currently owned is a BMW 745 and really like the soft close. Just latch and they close.

SO, BMW 7 series doors are much larger than the Acura, stay open when you open the car, easy to close, and work like a door should.

Acura 3rd gen - designed to nail your shin...

I'll try the suggestion above, but have... my wife said tonight she does that and it is still a pain... She does not usually complain about cars.
