yeah my tl is stock but i was thinking about also adding some gunmetal or flat black 18" wheels. Dont have any idea what kind. Right now i have 35% tint but if i were to do the paint job i would reduce it to 20%.

5k?? damn I could think of a better things to do but to each their wn. A positive(s) that could come of such paint job would be that police radar equipment would be less effective and your car would be able to retain heat alot better. Not sure it would be something you want if you live in a warm climate

yeah, that would be nice but if you do the flat black you need to black everything out, taillights, rims, everything!!

Just get the flat black vinyl overlay. There's a few BMWs that have turned a black one into a white one with just a big vinyl sticker. Cost around $3-4k afaik.

I havent run across any pictures of a matte or flat black TL, but i have found an is250 that has had the treatment, and it should serve as all kinds of inspiration for you to paint your TL just like this guy did to his lexus...

Flat black looks good ...but if it's done properly it could look like SHIT!! Look at the driver's door on the ^^ IS250 it looks dirty, but it's only a paint effect!

Be careful with paint mods !! If I had some money to waste....like my name was Bill Gates or Oprah I Would do it tomorrow!!!

I think it will look like absolute garbage. It won't go good on a TL only a very few cars look good in flat black.....another temporary fad. Come 2010 you will look at your car and wonder what the hell you were thinking back then......while everyone laughs at your car.

I think it looks really good when its clean, but it is so hard to keep clean. The dust and everything just sticks to it, its a pain to wash, and I don't know how the f to care for it. It definatly gets a lot of attention and is fun to watch people do a double take when they see it.

I don't know if I would do it again or not. IMO agressive/new lines are important for FB paint, and the 3G TL def has the new style lines. BTW I have a flat black e46 330ci with CSL bumpers, and am upgrading to widebody in the next year or so...

I'm not digging the flat black treatment. IMO, might as well just drive a car w/ primer on.

It may have this mysterious/shady/dark feel to it. But if that was the case, I'd just buy the bat mobile.

The flat black treatment just depreciated the value of that IS by $5k for me. If the guy ever planned on selling it, I'd ask to take another $5k off the price because of the paint.

But that's just my worthless $0.02.

This is a double edged sword....
I do think it does looks pretty cool, and it does stand out from other cars....but only for now.., like the earlier posts have said, I think its just a fad.

IT also can look like normal black paint with no clear coat.
Or a a very old paint job that has lost its luster over the years by baking in the sun and by beingwashing with Tide detergent.

Isn't it the shine and gloss that really make the car hot?
The gloss and shine of a car is what reflects the sky, sun, road, etc and brings out the contours and coolness of the car. With the flat black, you loose on the detailing, and subtle curve attributes of the car. The car like a TL which has those attributes, may loose alot of depth...

So for 5G's, I would save your money or shop around and get it for alot less with some guarantee that it will look smooth as hell.

D

I really feel horrible saying this, but I dont know... normal wax just makes a white haze on the car that is impossible to get off. I just clean it with dish detergent. I was told that spray on wax does the trick though so ill be trying that sometime soon.

I don't know how, but I don't have any good recent pictures of the car. This pic was taken when the car was half put together. The bumper is just sitting on, no mirrors, no blacked out turn sigs or kidneys...etc. I'll snap some better ones tomorrow.

I'd much rather spend $5G on a good wheels package, and performance mods.

or a street bike...again..

I expect you will get a lot of questions about what color you are getting the primer covered with.

Personally, I would stay away from it. But.. the fad is in right now, so if you want to do it, go ahead. It's your car, your money.

As you can tell, though, it will be very hard to sell the car like that.

For the flat <insert color> fans... (taken at the LA Auto Show):

SL63 flat white (if there is such a thing)

You know what this reminds me of? When you build a model car/airplane, and the plastic is pre-painted but meant to be painted by *you*. Well... that's what the SL63 reminds me of. Looks plastic-like and unfinished. Someone snap-tite'd the damn thing but was too lazy to paint it and put decals on it. IMO, it would've been so much cleaner and classier if it had gloss paint.

G-something flat not-sure-what-it-was (gunmetal?)

Over-exposed the 3rd shot a little. It's... different. Takes away from the classiness of the G (if that's the effect you're gunning for).
