First Oil Change

So the info center just told me to change the oil soon (under 15% oil life). Should I go to a dealership for the first oil change, or should I go to a jiffy lube.

do they do anything special to reset the oil life? how does it know it's time for an oil change?

thanks in advace,
-new TL owner

All I know is that you should be careful when going to Jiffy Lube...I've heard a lot of terrible things bout them on these forums..

I'm already at 6300 miles and my reading says <20%...but no maintenance warning yet...its making me question whether to wait for that damn light or go ahead and change it...what do you guys suggest?

I get the first oil change free from the dealer, so I'll just let them do that. The 2nd oil change I'll probably switch to synthetic, but I'm not sure where. Def not jiffy lube though.

Hi papa_giorgio, welcome to the forums.
A good chunk of your questions are answered in the 3G TL Garage. You will find discusions on oil changes based on MID or miles, synthetic vs dino oils, and a DIY guide on how to do an oil change, and how to reset the MID are all in the Garage. Search is also you friend.

There isn't really anything special with the first service other than the oil change. Good luck!

For me, my first oil change was a few weeks ago, and I just took it to the dealer. I haven't hit 7500 miles yet, but thats when I plan on rotating my tires.

the dealer told me that the oil life and oil change interval depends on the way you drive, so your light will come on soon. It comes on below 20%

Thanks datmrman, that's awesome info. I know i should've done a more detailed search, but I'm at work now and thought it would be faster to simply post the question.

How did you do that picture in your sig, hand trace in illustrator or did you have a plugin or something?

Mine did the same thing a few weeks ago. I've read the MID will warn at less than 15%, but since I knew I had a weekend ahead of me with a lot of driving, I just changed it. Piece of mind.

Click on his user name up by the date and time, then look for signature just below the avatar picture, and click on that.

I have <20% oil life right now with only 4300 miles. Going to change it when it hits 4500 miles, guess thats when 15% oil life will show up on the MID.

Though I live in Sac, I'm not coming out to SF to change it for you.

Btw, if you need an indy mechanic for service/repair in SF, Art's Auto in Berkeley is good...

good videos! i dont trust jiffy lube or anyone else. i took my last car (03tls) to a jiffy lube once after i washed & waxed 1/2 the day. the guys were checking out my car & i thought they'd have some respect. they have a stupid checklist that they have to do and this fat wigger left dirty drip marks all over the car from squeegeeing all the windows.
later, i started to notice oil in the driveway. i had acura check the leak & they showed me that the 1st 4 threads in pan were stripped and they were about to charge me over $730 for a new pan plus labor & tax. i didnt go 4 it, so the schmuck said ok, i'll just put in a longer bolt so u can make it home. i had a mechanic check it the next day & the bolt solved the whole problem. I think someone dropped my drain bolt in the oil & lost it, then just stuck some other bolt in. i've done every oil change myself since

i chage it at 20 % all the time jsut to be on the safe side... also, i don't think that the MID takes also the calculations for when the car is warming up, at a redlight or in bumper to bumer traffic or does it?

never hurts to go ahead and get it done. i don't put too much miles on mine so i assume will take forever to get to that point but will go ahead and change the oil anyways.
