First car!
First car!
Hey! I apologize in advance if I'm not in the correct section, this Is my first post haha. I am 17, and about to buy my first car. I heard about how reliable the TL's are, and how fun to drive they are! So I ran into a person selling a White 05 TL with 170,000 miles for 6k. The thing that caught my eye is that the tranny was just recently replaced and had a warranty for 3 years! So if the tranny is covered, would I have anything else to worry on for the car? Also, I don't believe it comes with the navi, and I was looking to put in a bluetooth stereo with a backup camera from car toys, and maybe put in some better speakers later on! Will it ruin anything in the car? Thank you very much!
The new tranny is a huge plus. That was the only real expensive issue with 05 TLs. Motor mounts might go...the rest of the stuff would be normal maintenance...brakes, struts etc. See if you can get one of the history reports on the car. Know that it will be due for the timing belt service at about 210K miles. If it's not using/burning oil you should good to go.

The other known issue with pretty much all J motors (that's Honda's engine code for these) is that spark plugs can blow out. It's not VERY common, but common enough for it to be something to check quite frequently. It's VERY easy to prevent - just make sure the plugs are tight, but can be expensive to repair, and can cause total engine devastation in certain instances.

I was in the same position as you, except a couple years older. Got this as my first car @ 20. The only thing scaring me at this moment with the TL is the transmission, not that I haven't been taking care of it, (regular fluid changes + pressure switches done) just that the auto transmission has a bad track record. But seeing as that has been dealt with and warrantied, I don't really see an overwhelming issue. In my year of ownership I've done normal wear and tear items with nothing out of the ordinary, I feel like it's going to be that way for a while. Take care of this car and it will definitely take care of you, it's been very solid for me (so far). I say if everything checks out mechanically, go for it.
welcome to azine - post some pics up of your car if you decide to get it, I love my TL and haven't had any major issues with it. For me that's high miles, but there are members that have that mileage and it still runs flawlessly.

I kind of don't really want the nav tbh. I want to put in a DVD receiver with a backup camera so its working out good for me. Thank you for the input though (:

Will do! Thanks! Planning on being active on the forum when I get my TL.
