EZ Pass and Factory Tint
EZ Pass and Factory Tint
I was just curious to find out, I just got my EZ Pass transponder and before I mount it on the front windshield I was hoping to find out if anyone who has them has put them under the factory tint on the front windshield if you have or did not have problems with the EZ Pass system picking up the transponder?
Reason I ask is, the factory tint on the TL comes down pretty far on the windshield and I don't want this white transmitter sticking out like a sore thumb from the outside. If I could put it under the factory tint it would be hidden but I want to make sure the EZ pass system will pick it up!

Mine is behind the darker part of the windshield but not in the black area near the rearview. Never had a problem on any roads, and I've used my E-ZPass in the TL in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.
(Just used my E-ZPass four times today, actually, including going through the main toll plaza at Tysons Corner at 60 mph....no issues.)

A metallic type tint can interfere with the antenna inside the ez-pass and other devices such as the GPS antenna. As well, depending on the coating/tint, it can interfere with remotes and radar-detectors along with other devices.
I painted mine flat black on all 3 cars, along with the adhesive strips then installed them on the windshield in the middle as the wife didn't want them on the pass side in her viewing area, even if they were at the top. On the TL it starts alongside the mirror bracket in the heavy tint and being black it can't be seen and never a problem.
How much do those fancy EZ-Pass things your city slickers have cost? Just curious.
I remember seeing a thread on here where a member painted his black so it wouldn't stick out as much.

I paid 30$ for mine, but once you activate it I got 25$ automatically put into the ez-pass account, so technically it cost me 5$ for it. It is well worth it if you ever have to go through tolls even only once and a while.
There's often a tag deposit, but it's often waived if you use credit-card auto-replenishment. That is, it charges a certain amount to your credit card (often either $25 or $35, depending on what your state requires and how often you use the toll roads—you can increase the amount if you're a heavy user) and then if you drop below a certain amount it charges your card for that same amount. So in theory you're making a deposit anyway—having an E-ZPass is sort of like having a prepaid toll account from which they debit money when you use a participating facility.
mine is right behind my mirror really doesn't bother too much plus sometimes when I leave the car at the dealer it reminds me to pull it off to take with me if I get a loaner
That varies. Some states impose a monthly fee to have one (New Jersey charges $1 a month, Maryland $1.50). Others do not (Virginia, for example). Of course, there is nothing preventing an out-of-stater from getting an E-ZPass from a different state, so when Maryland imposed a fee, a bunch of people over there dropped theirs and then re-joined through Virginia.

Exactly, that is why even though I live in NJ, I got mine through DE. They only charge a one time fee for the transponder but NO monthly usage fee like PA, NJ, and NY do. So before 2 years, PA, NJ, and NY would cost less than DE's but after 2 years, DE EZ pass starts costing less so it was a no brainer to go with DE.
Then Virginia joined E-ZPass and New Jersey imposed the fee, so I dropped the New Jersey device and got a second Virginia one.
As far as the fees go, though, I'll give New Jersey some credit: They at least farm the fees back into making improvements. If you're going to have to pay a toll, I'd much rather the toll plaza be designed like the new Exit 1 on the Turnpike, or the Paskack (sp?) Valley plaza at the northern end of the Garden State Parkway, where the fast E-ZPass lanes really are full-speed highway lanes instead of being converted toll plaza lanes with a 35-mph speed limit. If the fees help finance the conversion of the toll plazas to that sort of design, then perhaps the fee has some value, although it seems to me that it would be fairer just to raise the toll to finance such projects because the cash-payers benefit from the high-speed E-ZPass lanes as well (to the extent the lines are shorter).
Delaware is finally rebuilding that stupid Delaware Turnpike toll plaza in Newark, BTW, but there's still no reason ever to pay that toll. They use the money to continue their no-sales-tax regime (essentially, sock it to out-of-state motorists instead of taxing your own residents....at least it's a very short detour to bypass that tollbooth).

At least those of you complaining don't have to have a huge white parking pass dangling and flopping around on your mirror. Thing sticks out like a sore thumb...can even see it in my avatar on the left. The joys of being a student..
Interesting. I would've thought it'd be a lot more expensive. Indiana has 1 toll road I think so I'm kind of naive.

It was better when it was on the mirror cause it couldnt be seen from the inside of the car
