Extended Warranty...worth it?
I'm about to buy my first Acura...2006 TL, non-nav (don't need it, I never get lost), all carbon accessories. The initial warranty covers 4 years/48,000mi. But I commute so much that I'll burn through that in less than 2 years. Should I go for the extended 7 year/100,000 mi warranty?
I guess what I'm asking is...is the Acura THAT dependable? I currently have a '99 VW Passat that's been riddled with problems over the last 2 years. I don't want to go though large unexpected fixes. How often does that happen, where something odd goes wrong (not attributed to mileage wear and tear, such as belts, etc)?

It all depends how long you want to keep the car. Do keep in mind the TL has a lot of gadgets (Navi or not)...What do you think the cost of fixing for example the HFL is likely to be in case you are out of warranty. If you are going to put on a lot of miles it makes sense. Before you buy the warranty at the dealer, head over to Curry Acura's website, I think they have the best deal on Acuracare warranties. Got an 8 year 120000 mile for less than 1600. Have fun with you new TL...

Well see how far the tranny is covered up to?? If its covered up to 100k don't get the warranty. I have a 95 civic with 195k, 94 integra with130k and 03 TL-S with 39 k and if something doesn't go wrong with it within the first 50k thats major you'll be ok. Just my experience.

I would say yes. Plus Acura dealers will usually play more with the numbers for the extended warranty than with the price of the car..... I bought my extended.. always have always will...... whats an extra 1000 in a 30000 loan? worth the peace of mind

i've always wondered why warranties aren't more for Hondas because they have a standard 3/36 while the Acuras are 4/50. Obviously, witht he honda they would need to cover more ground. But i guess most problems occur above 75k.

Acura is NOTHING like the VW!
My last car was a 2003 passat GLX, its been like night and day....
Most places make a LOT of money on extended warentys, so I never get them.
I do my own work anyway so would not get one even if it was reasonable.
On a honda product, you are not likely to need it, but some people feel better being covered. What happens if you sell the car, wreck it, what do they cover,
how much does it cost?
Tires, brakes, and likely lots of other maintanance items are not covered, so you will still be spending money on the car.
The motor is not likely to fail, the auto trans is a question.

If you plan on keeping the car longer than the standard warranty, i would definitely suggest you get the extended warranty given all the electronics in the TL... IMO its well worth the extra money you would otherwise pay in the event something goes wrong...

Thank you! This is such a fantastic forum. I think I will go with some online coverage...found some great prices from a site called warrantydirect, and they look legit (which I found on a car buying tips forum).
I don't think the Acura will have the annoying problems that my VW had, but I do plan on having this car for at least 125k miles.

If you're looking for an Acura warranty, go to hondacuraworld.com. Tim has pretty good prices on different warranty plans. My local dealer wouldn't match his price. Tim's knowledgeable and very helpful. I bought my warranty from him.

forget it! Extended warranties are a huge profit for those selling them. sure, you might be one of the few who has a problem after the initial warranty expires, making the extended warranty worth it cost, but statistics prove that they make money, you loose. Most problems happen within the initial warranty period, so I'd rather keep the $1000 myself to use for repairs that might come up. anything huge like a new engine etc., are going to happen during the factory warranty.

So it is true that you can get an extended warranty not from the dealer that you purchase the car from and after you purchase the car? i know you can purchase it after you purchase the car, but the dealer always used to tell me that is was going to be 300-500 more after a certain mileage? what is the limitation on getting an extended warranty and how many miles you put on the vehicle?
