Extended Warranty and window tints - should I get it?
What do you guys think about extended warranties? I had it on my Maxima and it gives me peace of mind although that car is/was so freaking reliable I only had to use it one time.
I'm picking up a TL this Saturday and the dealer offered me a 7 yr/100k warranty for $1595 (it has a $50 deductible). They said it regularly sold for $2150 (I think).
They also wanted $225 for Llumar tinting with a lifetime guarantee.

I ordered both. My 6 year warranty was about $1,190/100,000 km and the tinting was $500. Thats Canadian. I believe the extended warranty will add to the value of the car when traded in. What level tint? I am getting 35% so the automatic day/night rearview mirror still works. My last car was too dark so the mirror didn't work.

If I am not mistaken you can wait and by the extended warranty years later while the vehicle is still under warranty; therefore you do no pay interest on the extension for the length of the original warranty. I would wait if the price of the extension later is the same as it is today.

The question of whether to buy extended warranty boils down to a risk-aversion issue. The dealer makes money on extended warranties, of course. Statistically, the dealer wins and you loose. Odds are that you will pay more for the extended warranty than you will gain from it. As is the case with all insurance, you are placing a bet that you will have bad luck. The only logical reason to buy any insurance is that you can't afford to insure yourself (or you the law requires it).

When I checked with my Acura dealer a few weeks ago they wanted about $1900 for the same warranty.
Regarding Window Tint...I checked with my local Honda service department and found out who did there tinting. When I went there the I was quoted about $130 for my 03 TL and it has a lifetime warranty. IMO most dealerships contract out the tinting anyway, so why pay the dealer extra. IMO the only advantage in having the dealer do it is, if you have a problem to can take it back to your Acura dealer and not have to deal with someone else.

Dealers make the most money off of extended warranties and that stain guard crap. My dealer started at over $2000 for the warranty as well, but I kept saying no. He eventually went down to what was his "cost" - less than $1200, but I still declined. I still have faith in Acura. Most likely if I have too many problems during the 4 years it's under the standard warranty, I will sell it off.

I did get the extended warranty for 2 main reasons.
1. I drive alot, so within 2 years, I will have at least 50k miles on my car, essentially leaving me on my own after 2 yrs.
2. This car has so much technology and gadgets. It's definitely nice, but risk of more things breaking, after 2 yrs and expensive to fix.
I paid $1,090 USD for 5yrs/100k miles ($0 deductible). I believe there is a $500 incentive from Acura - original price being $1,900. They initially offered for $1,400, but negotiated down to 1,090.
Your decision should be based on mileage driven per year. If you do not drive that much (10k per year), I wouldn't buy the extended warranty. If you drive alot, it may be worth the piece of mind. Remember, you can always cancel anytime if you change your mind later. (prorated refund, of course)

This weekend...I promise. I was gonna do it last weekend, but the car was too dirty and I didn't have time to wash it. I went to the TL party last night and they washed it good, then parked it right out front to show it off. They didn't have a Blue or a Navi, so they borrowed mine. Don't worry, I kept the doors locked.

I wouldn't get the warranty. My family has had 6 honda/ acuras and none of them have head any problems. Normal wear and tear maint. not covered in the warranty. Although FSCONSULT, makes a good point that this car does have alot of gadgets.
I am more of a risk taker.

I bought my first extended warranty with a Chrysler ages ago. It had an electronic dashboard. One month after warranty expired the dashboard went and the entire thing had to be replaced for $3,000. I have always bought an extended warranty since then and especially with this car as there are so many expensive things that could go wrong. Besides the warranty is only $1k or so, cheaper than any other one I have bought and it does add to the value of the car if you sell or trade it in while there is factory warranty left.
