Extended Warranty Advice

Hey there - I just purchased a 2005 TL with Nav at an Acura dealer in CT. Car has 101,000 miles on it and was a trade back to the dealer that had initially sold the car. The car was serviced on schedule for all recommeded maintenance. The most recent major service was done at 98,000 miles and included the timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, rear brakes and transmission fluid flush.

The dealer offered me an extended service plan that would cover everything "except the bumpers", including bent rims and blown tires. Deductible is $50 per service claim. Length of extended service coverage plan is 2 years and 24,000 miles. They wanted $2,400 for the plan and after several "no thanks" they were down to $1,350. The guy said that engine mounts and other issues would likely pay for it in 24 months. I still have one week to change my mind. Would you recommend taking this offer...? THANKS!!

you could gamble that your tranny will be fine and put the 1350 in the bank. or pay the 1350 for some insurance.

all engine mounts may be 600 tops, tranny 3500 - 4000 talk them down some more

Why would somebody sell you a warranty for $1350 when they know that more will be shelled out? There is a reason why these warranty companies still had record profits even in a down economy while paying fat salaries, incentives/commissions to dealerships, nice buildings and still the occasional claim. Bank that $1350 yourself and start you own fully-refundable insurance policy.

If you do decide to do it, read the policy. Lots of bumper-to-bumper policies end up being something else after your check is cashed.
