That would be awesome to salvage this thing, for your intended use, by Frankensteining it together.
Good Luck!

Well now I know and may save someone else some time trying to go down this road.

Swapped oil filter housings back so only vtec on head is in system. Pulled vcm plug and installed pressure switch out of my filter housing in that location, same fitting size and plugged in. Left a7 vtec plug in and wired to my vtec plug/harness and grounded as a7 engine has two wires going to vtec plug, my vtec has only one. Same occurrence, only 3,500 till cut out. So then tried to swap actual vtec solenoid assembly.... they are completely different and are impossible to swap. Sooo that’s that unfortunately. Hopefully someone needs a j35a7 engine. Thanks much for all the advice and information.

Just a thought, what about swapping to J32A3 heads? I expect there are other ramifications, so, like I said, just a thought.

Yes definitely a possibility but my mechanic bud thinks that the passages on block at oil filter housing could be different as well causing why my vtec wouldn’t work down there. Ironically I did pull heads off my j32a3 today to take to machine shop to get checked out/resurfaced. But I’d rather leave the a7 intact to sell.

Dam bro. That sucks. I’m sure you could get it to run with a lot of time and hacking away at your wiring. Thanks for the effort sir.

If heads from a j32a3 will swap over then it has potential to work. If oil passages in block aren’t like they need to be at oil filter housing then it’s a dead end I believe. But man when it revved to 5,000 normal cut out I thought it was going to work, just had no vtec kicking in. Maybe a tuner could reflash while trying where we were yesterday. If there’s no interest in complete engine then maybe this story is not done but for now it’s shelved.

would either of these swap with no issue or would I need to reflash ecu? Get the type s ecu?

As I understand it, the J35A8, regardless of the donor car, will drop, bolt, and plug in with no changes to the ECU or any of the wiring for any 2007-2008 base TL. If you search I believe there is at least one thread here chronicling the swap one individual accomplished.

A J35A8 TL.... Horsehoez... I think you're on to something!

There is no replacement for displacement as they say.... OP, you may end up with a sweet TL with little to no fabrication work. Keeping an eye on where this one goes.

Definitely more displacement is better. Pretty sure I’ve got the j35a7 sold so I pulled it last night. For now I’m going to use the 3.2 out of the wrecked car I bought but if I come across a deal on a j35a8 it will get plugged in. Thanks everyone for the info/help!

You can go j37 as well. The ua7 tls got newer bellhousing to work with newer j32 j35 and j37 (07+ jseries motors). Plus you can use hondata and ktuner.

For my purposes in these enduros the stock 3.2 is really more than what’s needed. Just cheap fun, the class is called the Crappers, lol. Honestly the way this car handled I could probably mount a weed wacker motor in it and do well.😂😂😂
