Cup Holders

Are the cup holders on this car ridiculous or what??? When I put my drink in them it disappears and I have to pry it out when I want to take a drink. I have to put something in the bottom of the holder to raise the cup, or buy super size drinks!!!!

Nobody puts any cups in my car. I have nightmares about coffee hitting the navi. One cupholder for the cellphone and one for junk. Works for me.

The front cupholder is lower than back cupholder in the front seat. Have you tried the back cupholder? It is noticeably higher.

If the depth of the cupholder is the worst ownership issue you ever encounter with your TL or any other car, consider yourself among the luckiest car owners of all time. Offer up a toast and celebrate your good fortune.

i think the cup holders are nice and stow away cleanly. i do admit sometimes its a pain when a passenger wants to get his drink out and you have your arm on the shifter. This becomes a problem alot on the 6MT. other than that its great, this is my first car with a cupholder.

The deeper cup holders ensure a good, stable hold on the cup= less spillage

I noticed the same thing about the cup holders. I find myself adjusting arm strength trying carefully not to lift too hard. Those plastic flaps that hold the cup have a real tight grip! I still like them compared to the second gen.

Gotta admit I like the cupholders.

Plastic flaps accomodate different size cups and keep them secure.

My take on the front holder being lower than the rear holder is to make it easier to grab the cup when two identical sized cups are in both holders.

On my 2000 Accord EX, if my wife and I had identically sized cups one in front of the other, the rims would touch each other. The sides were also close to the rims of the cups so it was diifcult to get a grip on the top of the cups.

In the 04 TL, that problem's gone since they're at different levels. Well, that's my theory anyway and I'm stickin' to it.

Wow, I'm surprised to read negative comments about the cup holders. IMO, the cupholders on the TL (and prior gen TL/CL) are the smartest design in the industry.

They accommodate a wide variety of cups, mugs, even a wine bottle if you're heading to someone's house for a dinner party. Got a big gulp? It fits in one of the holders. Yet so do regular cans, and bottles big and small.

They are deep so spillage is less likely. The plastic fingers hold objects securely.

They are located in the most logical and convenient place, and away from places where spillage could cause serious damage. Not like cars that have those horrible holders that pop-out from the dash and precariously suspend liquids above the shifter.

They close up nicely when you don't need them.

They hold lots of other things well, too. My cell phone sits in there just fine. So do coins, papers, name tags, pens, whatever. It's like an all-purpose container.

Well, I didn't mean to go on so long proclaiming the virtues of our cup holders. But everyone, bar none, who has rode in my car, and everyone who rode in my CL before, said my cup holders were better than theirs, no matter what kind of car or truck they drove. With so many positive opinions in my personal experience, it's interesting to find that some people don't like them at all!

Hey, this is the Acura forum. Whining and nitpicking about our TL is an artform for some (most) of us. :lol2:

I myself think the cupholders are the shiznitz. Makes me wonder by benzos and bimmers don't put as much thought into theirs.

You folks have to hurry up if you are going to catch up to the gas cap holder, which in my opinion is every bit as important as cup holders. The gas cap holder thread is up to 1,133 views right now, but has been dormant for a whole day so maybe it has reached its peak. http://www.acura-tl.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75723

But you would have to cut the cord, and many of us just don't ever want to cut the cord.

(Just increasing the thread count)

I LOVE the cup holder. I holds cans and 16 or 20 oz bottles so low!! Not in the way of the SHIFTER which is the most important thing for us manual people.

Cupholder Design - That's got to suck!

Man, designing cup holders must be one sorry-ass unrewarding way to get through life. You have to design for everything from coffee mugs, to slurpies, to super big gulps, and probably even mason jars. :toothless

At the end of the day, no matter how many containers you've designed for, there's some sorry-ass !&%$*#@&! down at the cup factory designing a cup that's not going to fit.

Wherever you are, Mr. Acura Cup Holder Designer, here's to you!

Cup holders are great like most have said. One little gripe though. The cover cannot be closed with a 12oz can in the front holder. That would be nice IMO. I often grab a coke before I leave for work and usually don't open it until I get there. I'd like for it to stow away out of site. Also, if, if, IF I have a beer with me, I'd like to be able to hide it, if necessary.

Both of the holders or only the front one? Front one is deeper...

I lovet he cup holder. One is deeper then the other. On my 1998 Tl the bottles would tip. They stay in place in the new car. Deep is better, much better guys, lol

I think the TL's cup holder are some of the best I've seen. They are a bit tight but I'd rather have a little too tight than a little too loose.

I think these cupholders are more functional than the 2nd gen holders; however, people seemed to really like the retracting doors. Lots of ooooh that's neat from guests. They liked the motorized entry to the back of CL too.

Yup, I liked those retracting doors. But really, they didn't serve any function that the current sliding door doesn't accomplish just as well. I also loved the motorized entry to the back of the CL, but hey, now I've got four doors.

Aquafina

Anyone drink the big bottle of Aquafina. The original poster is right. If this bottle drops too far into the holder, you have to really pull to get it out.

I modded the TL's optional ashtray to function as a coin/token holder. It fits perfectly in the frontmost holder and is easily removable so that if you have a friend with a beverage you can just remove the ashtray and throw it in the glove compartment until she leaves.

Try any German car!!!! My first A4 had "fingers" that couldnt hold anything, my second A4's cup holder sprouted from the dash, blocked the CD slot and was perfectly placed to spill beverages down the face of the stereo!!

Acutally the rear AC is routed on either side of the cup holders. With the AC set to 70 and the moon roof open it tends to cool your beverage down somewhat. If the retractable door could close with a 12 oz can in there, it could function as a mini refridgerator.

The metal trim on the center console gets very cold too.

I think the front cup holder is a 'D' cup and the rear cup holder is a 'C' cup.

Last two posts - ROFL!!!!

Boltjames my friend - tell us more about how you modded the ashtray. I have no use for one as a smoking accessory, but if you've come up with a cool mod, I might have to copy you.

(Got the same damn car anyway, gotta keep up! )

Rear holders

Anyone use the rear cup holders? I have once, and it appears very bouncy. Didn't spill a 12 oz can, but I think over a bump it would.

Okay, below are the step-by-step instructions for modding the optional factory TL ashtray into a coin/token holder. It's a little complex, so if you're having difficulty, just ask someone who works at a body shop:

1. Slide the door over the cupholders to the full and open position.

2. Confirm that there is no optional factory TL ashtray installed.

3. Close the door.

4. Put the key in the ignition.

5. Start the car.

6. Wait for the navi to display the "ok" button (it's grey with the symbol "OK" on it).

7. Hit the "ok" button (see above for "ok" button detail).

8. Depress the 'voice' button on the steering wheel.

9. Speak the phrase "find nearest Acura dealer".

10. Listen to the navi's directions and drive to the nearest Acura dealer. Depress the accellerator and/or brake as necessary.

11. Once you arrive at the nearest Acura dealer, put the car in park.

12. Turn off the ignition.

13. Exit the vehicle and close the door.

14. Walk to the door of the Acura parts department and open it.

15. Close the door.

16. Ask the attractive blonde with the heaving cleavage for the parts manager.

17. Ask the unattractive bald guy that you want the optional factory ashtray for the TL.

18. When he looks confused, tell him "yes, I know it says Honda Insight on the side of the box, but I want it anyway."

19. Remove your credit card from your wallet, signature side up.

20. Allow the bald guy to hand the heaving blonde the Honda Insight ashtray box.

21. Pay the heaving blonde $20 plus tax, and say 'thank you'.

22. Ask the bald guy if you can borrow a pair of pliers.

23. Use the pliers to remove the piece of tin that's inside the optional factory TL ashtray. This piece of tin is a cigarrette holder; since you don't smoke, you don't need it in there.

24. Now that the tin is out, there is room for your coins/tokens.

25. You now have modded the optional factory TL ashtray into an optional factory TL coin/token holder.
