Is this a crazy idea?
I have a 2008 TL 5AT with Nav (Base), it has about 12,500 miles on it, in absolute pristine condition. I still have about $13,000 to pay off on it over the next 3 years or so.
I got on Acura's CPO website today and I see alot of 2007/08 TL-S (5AT and 6MT) with around 20K to 45K miles on them, going for around $22,000 to $27,000.
KBB says my trade in on my car is about $25,500, will probalby be worth more since it would go back with the OEM A-Spec front\rear\side kit.
This got me seriously thinking about trading for something like an '07 TL-S 6MT with about 35K miles.
Is this totally nuts trading to a higher mileage, 1 year older, but faster model?
Do you think the dealers would do something like an almost even trade if their car came out to about $25,500?
I didn't get the Type-S in the first place becasue I didn't think I was goign to mod this car, I thoguht I was happy with any upgrade from my '00 Toyota Solara...but obviously I caught the mod bug when I came on this site to just find out how to install the damn cargo net...so now almost 2 years later, I'm kind of regretting that...
Should I just get back to work and stop musing? LOL

depends on how much the TL-S is, if you can pay off your TL and make some "profit" on it, you would be going in even more of a debt, relatively speaking.
but hey, if you really want that type-s, whats stopping you?

Just do an engine, emblem, dash, rim, bumpers, headlights, tail lights, side markers, brakes, steering wheel, exhaust and shifter swap.
You've got tons of mods tied into your base. Would be ashamed to get rid of her. Aren't you attached?

Well one thing that's stopping me is the fact that I got my car with 13 miles on it, so I know that for the last ~12K miles, I've treated the car like gold, where as with a 25K miles '07, who knows how it was treated.
I didn't go more than 50mph or 1/2 throttle those entire first 600 miles, full synthetic oil every oil change, not a drop of crappy gas in it ever...
I don't think I'd go in that much more debt, I'd be willing to spend another $2K-$3K when all is said and done becasue then I'd come out with certain things that I'd end up spending more than $2K-$3K on anyways (Brembos, bigger engine...)

This is tough!
Yeah, who knows how much damage could have been placed on the car in the first 600 miles (or how much it really matters). It all depends on what makes you happy. Unfortunately, there is no going back if you sell your '08. But, if you overlap them a few weeks, you could swap out the mods!

Decisions, decisions....
Thanks for the input, these things have all got me thinking.

do you drive your current TL hard? If no than why would you want the type-s if you are not going to put the extra's to use. Also i doubt the dealer will give you a good deal on your trade in. There is a reason why we call it the stealership. If you really want to get the type-s i would try and sale the current tl and than buy the type-s. Easier to haggle the dealer when all you have to negotiate is the price and not the price of your trade in with the price of the type-s.
man i wouldn't bother unless you really want that 6MT. Base is a nice car already and I think it looks better than the type-s, I hate the type-s a-spec kit. I'll sell you a crank pulley to make it faster if you want

There are going to be a lot of 07's and 08's coming off lease very soon. In my experience, people who lease cars are generally pretty anal about the cars becasue they don't want to be penalized for any damage. All of these cars are usually serviced at the dealer so you shouldn't have a hard time getting service records.
If you do it, I would look for a CPO lease turn in. Get the VIN, go to the service department and have them pull all the records for you, and get a carfax.
That's what I would do.

no no I am piecing together all the stuff I need for a timing belt and water pump replacement so when I get the mechanic to do that I will get him to install the pulley as well. I am hoping it's all good and I feel the difference.

My co-worker said the same thing. He's like "so you're gonna pay like $5,00 probably when all is said and done, why don't you just buy a supercharger, then you have more power than the type-s and you keep your current car."
I'll probably let the warranty pass first.
After all of this, I walk out to my car after work and felt like I was cheating on my GF when I got into my car...lol

that is an enticing offer, the even trade part if it works out that way, GL man
I did something similar to this. I had a new '06 Anthracite with 16k miles, and sold it to a colleague to mine to buy the '07 NPB TL-S. It took me a while to make the decision, and in the end I was out money, but it was worth it for me. Do with what makes you happy, especially if you think you'll have the car for a long time.
You'll feel better every time you pass a non-S-Type TL
.
Remember, you only live once, and it's just money.

Yeah thats what that guy thought last week in his NBP-S...got a rev and a stuck up look.. Then all he heard was a downshift and a whine and SEEE YAAAA
I looked into this too. I have an 04 tho, with 30k.
I still couldn't bring myself to do it. I felt like I just would have added more to my payoff for a car that isn't much different.
Besides, by the time I am done I will probably want a completely different car.
You don't have that much left that you owe. So if it were me i would ride it out and see what else is out there in the future.
