Unless you idle a lot, you should probably get better mileage in the winter, because the A/C is not working as hard. Before someone says the compressor is always on, I am sure it cycles on and off because I can feel it go on and off when I am stopped at a light.

You may have a bad sensor which is keeping it in a richer fuel setting. Best thing is to get it checked at the dealer.

This would be a good place to repeat my post from the other thread.

The stuff we get around here in the winter is only 95% gasoline and the other 5% is a mixture of ethanol and some deadly poisons the morons in Washington think is better for us than normal car exhaust.

Hey Ron A;

The only time your compressor might cycle in the cold weather is if you have the "Auto" feature set on for your HVAC. I don't use Auto for that very reason.. I do, however, engage my A/C from time to time in the winter to help keep the seals and parts lubricated.

As for fuel economy, you'll get better gas mileage in the warmer months than you will in the winter time.. all other things being equal, of course.

BTW, my mileage in the winter varies from around 24.5 to close to 27 MPG in normal work commuting. The difference comes about from driving enthusiasm and the "weight" of traffic.

Main,

What sort of driving do you do? What is your average speed between fill-up's? 16 mpg is what you would expect for a lot of stop-and-go driving and/or a lot of rapid acceleration from stops.

If, instead, your driving is a more normal mix of some stop-and-go, some highway, varying distances, normal acceleration, etc., then I'd guess there's something wrong with your car.

I still only have about 2500 miles on my TL, but the only time I get as low as 16 mpg is during 4-mile stop-and-go trips.

You might try taking yours out on the highway, fully warmed up, and then zero the trip computer. Drive at a steady 65 for 5-10 miles and check the mileage: should be in the high 20's, unless you're going up and down hill or constantly speeding up and slowing down.

Rick

Here in Chicagoland I got 18mpg over the summer, and I am getting about the same now in winter. Hopefully it increase as I put more mileage on the car. I am only at about 4000.

youre from new brinswick, which is somewhat close to where i live...my mpg has dropped too. during summer...i get around 250-350miles per tank depending on how i drive...now i get 200-250 per tank no matter how i baby the car.

maybe its the gas...but i get exxon/mobil...i was wondering what was wrong.

and i just want to ask a question since we are on the gas/exhaust topic. Arent the vapors that you see in the cold weather from the exhaust suppose to go away after the entire exhaust is cleared from condensation? you can see the vapors from my exhaust no matter how long i leave the car on, on my friends cars, it goes away after a little bit.

In the past 2-3 weeks, I've noticed the mileage drop off. I usually get gas at the 360 mile point. Lately, it's been closer to 290-300 miles per tank. It has been extremely cold here and I'm thinking this is the reason. I've also notice exhaust from the tails all the time.

A lot of northern states require Oxygenated (Sp?)gas for winter months. Usually MTBE, though some allow ethanol. While I lived in CT I could watch the commuter car (subaru) get 1-2 mpg less in the winter with same miles/week

gentlemen,
I appreciate your comments , there is a ton of STOP-N-GO that I do from and to work... I hardly access the HIGHWAY.. maybe that's one of the reason. Also, I noticed on weekends when I travel on turnpike, I get around 350 gallons... which comes to mind that I do tend to idle the car outside for a few minutes before I drive... perhaps idling the car can eat up that much gas?? I remember during fall I average 25mpg, and it is just surprising to me that I am getting 16mpg... but then again, i am in heavy traffic all the time. But I figured the stats said 20mpg in the city... but it should lose 4mpg every gallon...

for instance, I filled up my tank and yesterday it was nearly empty... the computer said "average 16 mpg, total miles driven 240miles"... once I fill it up, it said it should run about 326miles...

if it's too much idle, and too much heavy traffic with stop-n-go, then i can live with that, as long as it's not a defect.

thanks so much for your comments and advise

fondly,
Jeremy

I live just outside Denver and although it has not been as cold as it has in the northeast, it has been a bit cold. My mileage drops off very little when it gets cold. Last summer I was getting around 21-22 in town and now it gets about 20-21. We have to buy oxygenated fuels her in the cold months as well but I can't really tell what affect it has on the gas mileage, if any. My wife's Jeep Cherokee drops off a little more than my Acura. It normally gets around 18-19 in town in the summer and she's been getting about 16 or so. So I don't know if it can be attributed to the colder weather or the oxygenated fuels. Maybe a little of both.

One of the few things that disappoint me about this car.
I expected mileage to be a little bit better too. For performance, try BP Amoco 93.

Thanks for the replies, I found out what it was. Too much City "stop-n-go" driving, I went down to south jersey last night on jersey turnpike and I averaged 26mpg.

thanks!
