Clutch Longevity?

I recently bought a 2006 TL from my dad, who bought it brand new. It has pretty low miles, only 78k, and still has the factory clutch. To anyone with the manual, how long did your original clutch last? This car has been babied its whole life, so the clutch still feels strong. I'm just worried I might have to replace it sooner than later..

I'm also looking into getting a lighter flywheel when I do the clutch, as I wish the revs dropped a little faster during shifts. Any advice on brands/models of clutches and flywheels for this beautiful beast?

P.S. This is my first real post on here. I'm new, so of there is already a thread discussing this I apologize, just send a link to it please.

Funny, I just comment on the clutch in your other thread. Some go quickly, some go hundreds of thousands of miles.

I rather doubt a light flywheel will help drop the revs quicker; the minor rev hang these cars have is more a function of the programming for emissions than anything else.

Regarding the clutch and flywheel, your best bet is to stick with OEM parts which are made by LuK.

Mine went for 180k before going out. Replaced with Luk, parts cost me less than 500+400 for labor

How long your clutch will last? well how many MPG are you getting? well you get the idea....

I seen people has 300k on original clutch and 30k miles for a new set, well the idea is don't beat your TL MT much. If you search I made multiple discussion about this topic within last year

Nearly impossible to gauge. Clutches aren't a luck-of-the-draw part like an alternator or automatic transmission where two cars could be driven identically but one would have the part fail earlier than the other. If two clutches were treated the same on identical cars, they'll likely last about the same amount miles. The clutch between two identical vehicles is going to be the same, with the same amount of material and the same spring tension. It's the driver that's the variable. Already said, but it all has to do with driving style. I've driven three vehicles past 200K with the original clutch. '93 Accord, '99 Accord and an '06 TL.

My original clutch also lasted 180K, but I lived and drove in Manhattan at the time. It was a miracle that it actually went that long! The second clutch only lasted 40K! Ouch! That's when I learned (the hard way) that you ALWAYS replace the flywheel at the same time as it cannot be resurfaced. Apparently, due to the dual mass flywheel characteristics, they wear right along with the clutch. This notion is highly recommended by LUK tech support.

My car lasted 182k on the original clutch. But it really depends on the driving style on how long a clutch will last.

Agreed. When I lived in the NYC Metro area it was not unreasonable for me to have to launch from a standing stop fifty times in my ten mile commute; now that I live in New Hamster, my commute is just over twenty miles and I typically launch from a standing stop a maximum of seven times.

It all depends on how it was treated, since you got it from your dad it should be good for many more miles. The dual mass and check valve may make it feel worn but that’s not the case.

I have the XLR8 clutch and flywheel and enjoy it. Only replaced it because the stock one would slip but I drove it pretty hard with autocross and spirited driving.

Congrats on the sweet ride and welcome!

Not a TL but my G35 is at 172k on the original clutch. Despite the bolts on and tune, I don't really beat on it, maybe chirp the tires on the 1-2 maybe twice a month, can count on 1 hand how many 1500-2000 rpm off the line dumps I've done in 2.5 years I've owned it. Plus more than half the miles I've put on it have been on road trips. My brother had a 1987 Mazda 626 GT (basically the same as a turbo Probe) and it had the original clutch at 215k. On the other hand, I see people replacing the OEM clutch in 25k miles because of how they drive.
