Changing the shift knob?

I have a 6MT and I want to change the shift knob. How can I take off the OEM knob? I will have to put the OEM knob back on when the goes in for service. Will the ball design work with our TL? What should I look for when purchasing a new shift nob?

I believe you just unscrew to the left or counter clock wise. It should work if its a threaded hole, cause I believe thats what are TL's are. My TL is not with me at the moment but go try to take it off and see how its on there.

I would try but I'm too scared, I might break it. I'd rather get some replies from someone with experience from changing their own shift knobs.

Is it a MT or an AT?

AT: Just twist.

MT: As bklynpanman said, pull down the silver ring. It takes a LOT of effort. Then unscrew the shift knob.

Why do you have to put it back on when the car goes in for service? The knob won't affect your warranty, so are you afraid they will steal it?

My mom says that I can't mod it or anything because it's a lease. Can I still put in the knob on?

Yes. Just keep the original knob to return when the lease is up. I don't think you should take it off every time you go for servicing. That is a pain in the ass, and if you are planning on doing that...I would just kill the idea of buying a shift knob.

I'm sure you'll be fine, no need to switch it off everytime

The service department doesn't know and doesn't care if it's a lease, and neither does anyone else in the dealership. As long as you put put it back to original when you turn it in you will be fine. And some dealers even let you leave certain mods on if they think they can make some money off of them.

Thanks again.

It's really my mom's car but I drive the TL 90% of the time. Now I have to convince her to let me switch the knob

Quick question:

What shift knobs can work with our TL? I'm asking because the little silver ring is bothering me. I need a shift knob that can the silver ring can attach to so it looks nice. Does anybody have examples of their aftermarket shift knobs?
