Car Broke Into

Hey Guys-
Was at Coachella this weekend, and someone broke into my car. I'm trying to figure out how...

What I can say is that the person was in the front seat and stole my ipod out of the middle compartment. The person also stole my computer in case out of the trunk. In hindsight, I thought it was completely safe in the trunk. FYI, was at Coachella 3 days sleeping at a hotel (which had Internet). That morning, packed up car and drove / parked all day long and didn't even know things were missing until I arrived back home in LA to take my stuff in. I called the hotel, retraced my steps and then noticed my ipod was missing from the front compartment.

How smart is my thief? Or was this a crime of opportunity?

- Could I have left my car unlocked. My baby? My most favorite thing in the world? Unlocked? At a concert?!
- Could someone have broken in / forced entry without there being evidence?
- Are there futuristic things which allow thieves to figure out security code and open the door / Bourne Identity Style?

I’m just glad the bastard didn’t mess up my car. I would say driving my TL to the fairgrounds was a mistake. It wasn’t the nicest car there, but it has been lowered and is white and clean and does stand out.

I lost my ipod, my computer, case, modem & wireless router. The thing is I would give this person street value of my stuff just to get it back. I filed a police report and the officer seemed to think I might get it back, but I don’t believe him.

Max

Well, you could of left your car open, many stupid thieves just walk around at big events and just pull handles to see if it's door is open or not...

My question is though, how was he able to open your trunk? Unless he knew to open the rear console rest, and pull on the emergency cord...

(suspicious....... )

Isn't there an auto lock feature you can set? Like when you set your personal settings to keep the lights on for a certain amount of time...

Am I missing something here,,, as in due to the fact the perp was "in" the car all he had to do was push the trunk button correct.....

LoL, KJSmitty...no..you are not missing anything, I'm just an idiot....lol

I need to go eat my lunch to get some brain power....for some reason I thought without a key, the battery power is cut off to the trunk....

Thanks! Lunch Time.

PS I always keep my valet security trunk locked...that switch in the glove box.

even if you leave the car w/o keys, it stays unlocked. For example, unlock, open door, close door, leave... stays unlocked.

I leave my car unlocked 24/7 in the garage...a lot of times I run in and out of the garage into my car to get things, no need to worry about having a key on me.

No- the TL never automatically locks after any door has been opened- you must lock it with the remote, key or door lock buttons.

The only time auto lock works is if the driver unlocks but does not open any door, at which point the car will relock itself in the time set through the MID.

Sorry to hear about your loss and hope you get your stuff back. The TL has an automatic lock feature if you unlock the car with your remote but don't open a door within 30 or so seconds. It will not automatically lock if you leave it unlocked.

Okay, thanks guys. My car will automatically LOCK if I unlock it (from a locked state) and then don’t open a door within 30 seconds. But if I walk away after driving it without locking it, it will remain unlocked.

I hate to admit this, but I must have forgot to lock it and some thief prowling Coachella in California walked up and down, noticed my car, tried the door and it opened. My windows are tinted and in that sunlight no way he saw through the window that it was unlocked. I always lock my car, and take good care of it, but I think the idea that I locked it and someone used a device to unlock it is highly unlikely.

If you need to keep something in the car, put in your trunk, and enable the valet security switch for the trunk....and of course lock the glove box....this should prevent from trunk opening....as power is cut to the trunk.

You should also lock the pass through hatch behind the center console of the rear seat.
